Title: can you check English grammar please
Post by: kotwica666 on March 04, 2016, 11:42:34 AM
As in topic - can someone with high English skills check grammar in this quote:

"Bitcoin for the current financial world, is like a deep breath, after entering the top of the mountain."

The first clause is has a misplaced comma, and the word order is awkward.

Incorrect: "Bitcoin for the current financial world, is like a deep breath..."
Correct but awkward: "Bitcoin, for the current financial world, is like a deep breath..."
Better: "For the current financial world, Bitcoin is like a deep breath..."

The last clause is grammatically correct, but "entering" is the wrong word. To "enter" something means to go inside it, not on top of it. A better word would be "reaching".

There should be no comma before the last clause unless you mean that before reaching the top of the mountain, Bitcoin is not like a deep breath (which makes no sense).

Putting it all together:
"For the current financial world, Bitcoin is like a deep breath after reaching the top of the mountain."

Thank you Lutpin. I was not sure if it means that "is already following" or "will be following".

Those commas don't need to be there. Commas are mostly used for conjunction sentences, before words like and or but, so there is no need for them there even if you want the reader to read it slowly.

I think comma before word Bitcoin is ok. When i read that, little break in this moment sounds good to me :)

As in topic - can someone with high English skills check grammar in this quote:

"Bitcoin for the current financial world, is like a deep breath, after entering the top of the mountain."

I think this works:

"Bitcoin is a deep breath of fresh air from the top of a mountain for the current financial world"

However, I might write the following for more tactility:

"Bitcoin is like the fresh air taken in a deep breath after reaching the summit of a Himalayan mountain to our current financial world."

Been wanting to touch up on my grammar and how I write. Do any of you have suggestions of sites to practice the basics and develop from there? Drives a bit wonky when I look at lines of spew and no real control of what I am stating.

Maybe Lynda or the Khann institute as examples.

Instead of reaching you can say , after reaching at the top ...

Entering is not a valid word here as explained in above posts .

Doggerel Haiku:

   Orange Bitcoin
   Honey Badger Attack
   HODL!

How's that for a first attempt?

I think comma before word Bitcoin is ok.
It's not just okay, it's mandatory. "For the current financial world" is a non-restrictive clause (you can remove it without changing the meaning of the rest of the sentence), so it must be separated with commas.

Is it "You're always welcome!" or "Your always welcome!"? (think: Your Welcome.)
Think: "My welcome!" (sentence fragment) or "I am welcome!"?

Haiku was my first choice, but upon Googling...

BTW, you're missing two syllables.

   Orange Blossom Bitcoins
   Honey Badgers Attack
   HODL!

"For the current financial world, Bitcoin is like having a deep breath after arriving on the top of the mountain".

Just trying if it makes sense.

I think it should be:

"Bitcoin, for the current financial world, is like a deep breath after entering the top of the mountain."

I'm from England, that's how we learn it anyway.

Quote
Bitcoin is like a deep breath after entering the top of the mountain.
That is the main caluse of the sentence, as you can tell it can stand alone.

Quote
for the current financial world
We can then embed this subordinate clause that doesn't make sens on is own, but in the sentence, it fits well.
