Title: Why my domain is not showing with "WWW" and "HTTP"
Post by: akamit on March 04, 2016, 09:35:05 PM
I bought domain and hosting and my site is up now.

But my site url is showing as xxxx.com Instead of www.xxxx.com or http://www.xxxx.com

Need some help.

IP Address Tracker (https://www.iptrackertool.com/) gives you every bit of information you need to know regarding your IP Address.

Ideally, you'd prefer to have it sans the www part. You're able to set which one you want, with the one you don't want currently set as default. It's really no big deal except for aesthetic (and ease of use).

I can't answer the technical part much, although I think it's to do with your MX (hostname?) records at the domain provider. Although it should be said that the www. is becoming a relic of the 20th century that is no longer needed and can only really be utilized for more memorable branding in marketing adverts.

My recent purchased dormant domains have the www since I'm not hosting them yet, but the ones I do host on HostGator are without the www part.

Replying to the thread, a domain name is just the main domain and you can have different services associated to it, using its subdomains.
For example, you can have a mail serverver responding at mail.mydomain.com or an ftp server on ftp.mydomain.com.

Historically the www subdomain is used for the website and the main domain could be configured to respond to other than the webserver.

About the OP question, I think that the problem is only with www, because it seems obvious that h t t p://xxxx.com will work.
To resolve your problem, you could firstly take a look to your hosting admin panel, to see if there is some setting to configure it.

If not, is your hosting on linux? Can you use .htaccess files?

I do agree it is a relic from the 20th century and I don't use it in any of the websites I admin, but if you really wanna do it, just login into cpanel, go to Domains and set up a permanent redirect from yourdomain.com to www.yourdomain.com.

You can also do it via .htaccess, just add:

Code:
RewriteEngine On
RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} ^yourdomain\.com$ [NC]
RewriteRule ^(.*)$ http://www.yourdomain.com/$1 [R=301,L]
