Title: [82/83] "What is Bitcoin?" silkscreened posters [UPDATED DESIGN FOR 2016]
Post by: nubbins on March 04, 2016, 10:11:59 PM
THE LEAD-UP:
Most of you know me from dealing with Casascius coins, but some of you may know that I also run a silkscreen printing business. I was commissioned by a client to design and print a "What is Bitcoin?" print last year, and since the last edition was such a smashing success, I've decided to revamp the design for this year and print another edition.

THE POSTER:
6-colour 14-layer silkscreen print with hand-inked details on 18x24" natural Cougar acid-free art paper. This is more than double the amount of colours used last year, and the natural off-white paper lends a classy look to the piece.
Limited edition of 83 prints.

THE TIMELINE:
The design will be finalized by March 15, at which point printing will begin. The new design will be revealed step by step as each layer is hand-printed.
Printing is expected to be completed by March 31.

Mailouts will begin as soon as shipping materials arrive.

THE PRICE:
Pricing for this print is 0.15 BTC plus shipping. Flat-shipping is estimated at 0.1 BTC and tube shipping is estimated at 0.05 BTC for North America and Western Europe.
The only payment address is 18eQJRj5dMVtT1TeGr3sVesmFBruCq6f8F. If someone tells you to send to another address, it is a scam.
BE PREPARED TO SIGN A MESSAGE FROM YOUR OUTPUT ADDRESS IN CASE OF PROBLEMS.

THE CATCH:
I've produced digitally-printed proofs of the poster design, but I'm not sharing photographs until the actual print run has commenced, because a digital proof and a real silkscreen print are so very different that one would not serve as a fair substitute for the other. I'll reveal detailed photographs of the actual silkscreened posters once the print run is complete, but PRE-ORDERS WILL BE PURCHASING THIS POSTER BLIND. If you're concerned about this, check the previous sale thread to get an idea of what to expect: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=756955.40 (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=756955.40)

HOW DO WE KNOW THIS ISN'T A SCAM?
Good question! You should check my trust ratings here on the forum, as well as my OTC Web of Trust ratings.

HOW DO WE KNOW THE POSTER ISN'T GOING TO SUCK?
It's the best Bitcoin poster. You're going to love it. Not sure? Just wait for the pictures! The discounted early-bird price is a thanks for going out on a limb, but any remaining posters that haven't been claimed by the 15th at noon will be available for sale, with more pretty pictures each day so you know exactly what you're going to get.

By checking out the process photos, starting here (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=1387250.msg14270969#msg14270969).

THE COUNT:
As of right now, 82 posters have been sold, 1 remains. Please see resellers to obtain a copy.

Will this be a totally original design or resemble the first poster you did? I'd buy one if it's a new design

I'm an expert shipper -- ask anyone who's ever received a package from me.

The last batch was the first time I ever flat-shipped something this big, so I did some stress tests: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=756955.msg8674055#msg8674055 (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=756955.msg8674055#msg8674055)

That said, if you don't mind your print having a curl, tube shipping is fine. Some people REALLY hate it when artwork is rolled because the curl tends to set in the paper; just as many others don't mind. If you're not planning on getting it framed, it's probably not worth spending the extra money on flat packing. Please don't use thumbtacks either way 8)

Will this be a totally original design or resemble the first poster you did? I'd buy one if it's a new design

I think the text of the original design is quite eloquent, so I think I'll keep that generally unchanged and drastically modify the colour palette and specific details of the design itself, while keeping the same general flow and overall shape and feel of the original. The intent is that the two pieces can be appreciated individually, or provide a striking juxtaposition when placed side by side. Think day vs night, opposite sides of the mirror, etc.

If you're not sure, you can always wait until I start posting photos!

For those who missed out on getting a first edition, here's some process pictures that you may find interesting: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=756955.msg8575850#msg8575850 (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=756955.msg8575850#msg8575850)

Daily bump. Four prints sold already! You guys are art fanatics. It's really encouraging to see a market for artwork that isn't just lame digitally-printed images (AKA colour photocopies ;) ).

Obviously folks around here understand the value of hand-printed items.

All three of you please send funds to address in OP and PM me your mailing address, unless I already have it permanently etched into my brain from all the coins I've mailed there in the past 8)

Got the colour scheme finalized and it's looking pretty rad! Diving into the individual components of the design now to smarten everything up. Going for lots of fine detail in this one.

Current cost for a single poster & shipping based on today's rates:

Roll shipped: 0.146 BTC
Flat shipped: 0.195 BTC
Extras (each): 0.1 BTC

nubbins wanted to enter my life again dredging up his old grudges. I would be happy to let the past be the past but he is not. His first run of posters were pretty childish. I was genuinely disappointed with them when I got them but I didn't want to hurt his feelings. Then he started attacking me... so here I am.

Ah ok, you went with the second option then. The original run was sold blind, like winning the lottery or pulling the short straw - you just got to live with it. I happen to think the first poster is vibrant, original, colourful and many others have said the same. Infact the only reason this second run is being produced is because people missed out and there was interest in a new run. Some people were looking to buy a copy of the original a few weeks ago, so if you really didn't like it you missed the chance to offload.

TECSHARE, thanks for the free bumps! It saves me the trouble.

Two more posters sold since TECSHARE's vendetta spilled out into this sale thread. I'll update OP with quantities and respond to all PMs today.

FWIW our troll friend bought 10 (!) copies of the original poster. I later gave him (and everyone else) the option of a partial refund on his shipping (purchasers of the original series can verify this), but he chose to decline. Somehow in his broken, paranoid brain, this turned into me scamming him.

If you can't simply ignore TECSHARE (the button is right there under his name), maybe you can at least have a chuckle at the fact that he purchased $400 worth of goods that are now worth $1500 and he claims he's gonna burn them out of spite. Then maybe take a look at his psycho post history. Then maybe pop on over to the scam accusation thread where I spell out precisely why he left me bogus negative feedback in an attempt to extort me.

Although probably the best course of action is to just ignore the idiot and not quote or respond to anything else he says, which is what I'll be doing. I encourage others to do the same.

New design is a bit behind because we had a huge rush order for a luxury hotel come in; discount pricing is extended for a few days until I can start posting photos :)

Roll shipped: 0.144 BTC
Flat shipped: 0.192 BTC
Extras (each): 0.1 BTC

Once again, is 0.1 BTC the price for an extra poster? (Because my question wasn't answered before and I want to make sure)

That's already the early bird pricing. The extra costs (0.04 BTC /0.09 BTC) are just shipping costs. A single poster costs about 0.1 BTC

Last year, I think I extended the early bird pricing until fairly late in the actual printing process, with the idea that you get a discount for purchasing before the final design is revealed.

Laying down the first of two background floods right now, pictures later tonight / tomorrow :)

Sent you a PM! 35 posters spoken for, 65 remaining. Two layers down so far. Those of you who own a print from last year's edition and have spent time admiring the background sky/cloud layer will appreciate seeing what the same effect looks like with near-complementary colours.

<weak trolling attempt>

This is actually a great time to mention that 90% of the screenprinting work we do is wholesale jobs for other artists and clients; silkscreen prints look and feel way nicer than digital prints, and for the size we're dealing with here (18x24"), they're actually way more economical, too. Most of what we do involves taking poster/print designs from independent artists and producing beautiful hand-made prints of their designs, which they can then sell to help support further art creation. It's a great way to get good, original, unique art into people's hands while also making sure the artist gets a fair cut. If any artists have any questions about silkscreen printing, shoot me a PM and I'll answer any questions you may have.

Price the thing in bitcoin and I'll buy one!

[This means remove mention of counterfeitables in the OP]

I caved! Please see OP for prices in actual units of currency.

One poster, roll shipped (N. America/W. Europe): 0.15 BTC
One poster, flat shipped (N. America/W. Europe): 0.2 BTC
Extra posters, each: 0.1 BTC

The third layer was pretty boring. This colour is called "puke yellow" and it looks like hot vomit on white paper, but has a really nice subdued lime sort of look on the dark green background.

https://i.imgur.com/oOWYngrl.jpg

Layer four was supposed to be a nice bright yellow, but the ink was just too transparent to get good coverage on a dark background.

https://i.imgur.com/LgRoNqjl.jpg

Soooo, I scraped the yellow ink off the screen, printed the layer with white ink instead, then cleaned off all the white ink and ran through the entire edition again with a yellow topcoat. Here's a print with just the white underbase, and with the yellow on top.

https://i.imgur.com/9W4beeVl.jpg

Nice and bright!

https://i.imgur.com/zvT6odkl.jpg

Since this layer ended up being two layers and took quite a bit more time than I'd planned for, I entertained myself by taking some time-lapse videos of the print process.

I've also been considering adding a unique hand-coloured detail to each poster, but WE'LL SEE. No promises. Maybe if we get to 50 8)

Couple of detail shots of the print thus far:

Yep! Each print will be individually signed and numbered.

Layer nine: red.

Current estimate is twelve layers. I think I'm getting carried away 8)

Layer 10: pink.

You can really see the height of the ink in the second photo. Check out the shadows & highlights where pink meets white.

Open in a new tab to view full-size... There's no counterfeiting these  8)

Looking like 13 layers total now. Sorry for all the suspense  :-[

Sure, no sweat. Add an extra 0.025 BTC :)

UPDATE: more photos!

Rack full of prints!

Layer 11: beige. Detail layer, no close-up shots. Mixing the ink on the screen to work out streaks.

https://i.imgur.com/KFtFnTR.jpg

Layer 12: violet. Detail layer. No close-ups! Here's the ink getting mixed.

https://i.imgur.com/cKUkRZQ.jpg

Layer 13: black gold.

This one's straight black mixed with pure metallic gold. Tough to photograph, but it shines like satan's gold tooth if you can get the light to hit it just right.

Before and after layer 13:

https://i.imgur.com/bPYtQvB.jpg https://i.imgur.com/Vi9WQDQ.jpg

I think I only have one layer left to go. *Maybe* two. This is officially the most complicated print I've ever produced, and the final edition size will likely be less than 100, because it's very difficult to push a squeegee 4,000 times without making a few mistakes :)

Printing is complete. Next stage is working on the hand-inked details on each poster!

I've also pared down the edition size, so there'll be less than 100 posters for sale; the original plan was for an 8-layer print, and I included an appropriate amount of extras in the edition for spoilage. Now that we're at 14 silkscreened layers with some hand-inking on the horizon, we've understandably burned through our extras and then some!

Final edition size is estimated to be approximately 80 prints, which I guess is good news for everyone who's snagged one so far; once the hand-inked details are added, I'll trim the edition, sign and number each print, post a final round of photos and declare the Early Bird pricing officially over. I'll be opening up general web sales on a dedicated site at that point as well, so expect the remaining ones to sell quickly. Packaging materials are on the way, and mailouts are looking like they should meet the end-of-month deadline, give or take a day.

Thanks again to everyone who's ordered so far, stay tuned for a mess of photos!

EDIT: Just one to keep you sated until I get a chance to post some more. Check out the sparkle in the black gold ink!

All rolled posters have been shipped and should arrive at their destinations within a week (North America) or two (elsewhere).

Still no photos, sorry, it's been a busy couple of weeks. We rent out a room on AirBnB and had to soundproof the walls after some really noisy neighbours moved in.  :(

Flat packs will ship out tomorrow and hopefully I'll have some more photos to show by then. Stay tuned!

Btw, am I supposed to preserve it with 14-layers intact? I mean 14 layers make up to a single poster giving it a 3D appearance, right? I know I sound ignorant but I have never dealt with multi-layered silk-screened poster before. :P

You will be able to feel the texture of the different layers of ink. It's not like a 3D sculpture or anything, but there is a small amount of depth to the ink. Try rubbing your (clean) hands over it when it arrives :)

All orders have been received and all remaining packages will be sent out tomorrow. If you're still waiting for a tracking number, please PM me again to remind me, as packages seem to have started arriving.

Just realized that I still haven't posted photos of the completed poster, thanks minerjones ;)

Busy busy times, I'll get to the photos when I get to 'em, otherwise feast your eyes on the above :)

Stay tuned for news on an interesting promo another user is running, and you'll also be pleased to hear that a deadbeat who wanted 5 posters didn't pay, so there are still 32 left to grab.

I'm currently accepting wholesale buys (10+ units) to help clear out the remaining stock.

Cheers!

Correct me if I am wrong though.

He is talking about PGP signed message from the bitcoin address that you are sending the funds from to prove that it is you.

Hi folks, sorry, our provincial government released a brutal austerity budget two weeks ago and there's been a flurry of protests since that's happened -- been really busy pumping out propaganda and rallying folks. Over 2,000 leaflets & posters distributed, with rallies doubling in size each week  :o

Indianacoin and IOTUSA, please PM me with a BTC address and I'll return the cost of your posters to you, with my sincerest apologies for the delays in shipping. They're finally on the way :)

Others who are still waiting on posters, please PM me (again! sorry..) and I'll sort out your tracking numbers. I still have all the slips here. Some of the packages in last year's batch took several weeks to arrive; I think only a single one was actually permanently lost in transit.

I'm much too busy right now between running my business and doing activism work / opposing the new budget, so at this point I will probably halt all retail sales of these posters and turn it over to other distributors. I believe MinerJones has shown an interest in reselling.

Indianacoin and IOTUSA, please PM me with a BTC address and I'll return the cost of your posters to you, with my sincerest apologies for the delays in shipping. They're finally on the way :)

Hi, I have sent you a pm with my BTC address.
Hopefully you noticed it until now.

This is just a reminder for that.

30 posters were purchased yesterday by a bulk reseller. I believe i have just two posters remaining, probably #82 and #83. If anyone would like to purchase these specific numbers, please let me know. I'll likely only ship within North America. Please see IOTUSA or minerjones for all other purchase enquiries.

Thanks again for helping support a small print shop, maybe I'll see you all again next spring :)

Haha.. I got that from a Casascius auction. IIRC my offer was contingent upon him making me a custom art piece to go with the coins.

Has anybody in the EU received their posters?

Sorry guys, all the packages were awkward sizes, and it's prohibitively expensive to mail a large package via express. All of the rolled posters ended up costing me 2x what I charged for shipping.

Packages are all on the way, I don't have any more info beyond what Canada Post says, your packages will eventually arrive, and any that don't arrive will receive a 100% refund. Patience ;)

Good news: all posters shipped to germany arrived in Hamburg.
Bad news: DHL package center Hamburg is an effing bermuda triangle.

But let's wait and see. Glad there was a shipping update yesterday :)

Sadly, the entire Atlantic Ocean is a Bermuda Triangle for tracking packages.

If you take a look at a map of Canada, you'll find St. John's on the very, very eastern edge of the island of Newfoundland. Roughly 2,000km to the west, near the Great Lakes, is Montreal.

International packages sent from St. John's must first travel to Montreal, THEN they're sent overseas from there.

Wildly inefficient system, and now you know why shipping costs so much ;)

(Anyone who has received a "tube" / rolled poster is welcome to share a photo of the postage -- I lost HUNDREDS of $$ underestimating the cost of rolled shipping)

You can now be the owner of one of these masterpieces as a redeemable NFT! (Includes shipping to U.S. destination as part of the NFT). High quality cleaned up scan of original numbered and signed print as NFT and you can get the original shipped (already included in NFT price). With Nubbins blessing and 10% of sale price going to Nubbins as royalty for the artwork!

Do we get an NFT sent to us with the # print of the poster we already own if we own one of these and can prove it? I’ve been a fan of this poster and love the idea of it paying dividends in the form of an NFT for owners after all of these years. Nice work either way. Good idea.

Some background: neuromancer purchased the print that’s being NFT’d some time ago, and he created the digital file that accompanies it — a hi-res scan of his specific print. As each print was done by hand, each one is actually slightly different — the most noticeable area is in the gradient sky background. If you want to NFT your personal prints from this series in the same manner, a 10% cut of the sale will endow you with my blessing on the endeavor. You’d likely want to pay for a hi-res scan of your specific print, including the number and signature on the bottom, but any reasonably equipped print shop or college/university/museum should be able to assist with this.

Thank you for the input Nubbins. I will add that I had each print scanned in 300DPI (i have tiff, PDF, and high res JPG) so each NFT comes with high resolution and professionally cleaned up and color matched scan of each specific poster already, so any NFT that is purchased comes with matching digital file, of that specific poster. Figured it was worth doing it right. I would also be open to selling the 'NFT' (digital files) as well as the print here on Bitcointalk directly via Nubbins as escrow and bump the cut to 15% for the effort involved in facilitating the sale as a trusted party.

I would love to be able to provide this service, however it makes little sense for you to send me the poster to have it scanned and send it back. I recommend (see Nubbins post) using a print shop (that's what I did) to have a print-resolution scan made of the print. After that you can simply mint your own NFT on a platform of your choice. I don't claim to hold any 'rights' to the NFT creation, I simply asked Nubbins for his blessing, and offer him a cut of any sales of the posters I already own, and turn into NFT's. Since they are numbered and signed, I assume that if the quality is good, a NFT you mint of your own poster would be the 'same' as the one's I am minting as far as value and uniqueness.

If you would like one of my NFT's with the poster shipped I would be happy to trade for any other crypto memorabilia you would like to part with. I own a few Nastycoins myself and love them, for example.

I fully agree. These are great posters. I also framed mine in very similar frames (with no matting) and have them hanging in my house. Nobody ever asks about them, but they should because they’re awesome. I only wish they had been loaded with some BTC back when they were created so that their value could have risen like they deserved to. Wish I could have something similar custom made for myself. Everything down to the style of art is great.

If they were loaded then I most likely would not have these. So I am grateful there are some older, non-funded bitcoin art in the wild for us to find and enjoy. But I understand where you are coming from. The things that held value against bitcoin the best over the years were funded bitcoin collectibles.
