new thread link
I will be locking this once I pay off

https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=1402986.msg14238081#msg14238081

I have 0.6 btc left  so six more jumps and funds empty.

I think I will go up to the ½ ing so I may add the needed funding to reach it.

Just setting up-- back link to last diff thread

https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=1369886.0

we had a winner so we start at 0.10 btc

I am allowing anyone that Joined the site  before Jan 1 , 2016  and has 30 posts to play.

I have decided to allow rollovers to just keep going.

I have 0.6 btc left in prize money which means we go on for at least 12 weeks.

That  is around May 20- June 1.  I may add more prize money so we reach the ½ ing

Rules.

 1) You joined at least last year 2015 and have 30 posts or more.
 2) Since it is free and no cost to you I may disqualify you if I think you are trying to do multiple entries.
 3) I will let these roll over so prizes could reach more then 0.2 as high as 0.6 if we have many misses

4)  picks are in the format below

so +1.0 = yourforumname  is the way to write your pick    and that gives you  +1.00 to   +1.09 percent as your range

this is last contest

Looks like someone flipped a switch, network hash rate took a huge spike up after the negative adjustment.  Gee, could that be on purpose?

I have often wondered if changes at Big Farms would in any way be structured round difficulty changes? A thought that has struck me is that if you were making significant changes that might disrupt Mining then you would not do them in the last few Days of a Period when the rewards were higher but wait till the early Days of the new Period?

Except in this case where the rewards will be higher in the New period, so perhaps you would hold off adding new Hash that would make the Difficulty change less advantageous?

Absolutely correct.  13 to 14 days of a -3.1 adjustment

Which if you mined like mad a day ago would have been 13 to 14 days with a +1 adjustment.

This is hash rate manipulation to the max. Not good for the industry.

Also notice price drop to 388 hmmm  same guy dumping the new coins to pay for the new gear.

Strip mining at its best. >:(

Spoke soon it has dialed back a bit.

I am going to be very surprised if we don't get a positive here.   I can't see a pattern in past 3... just does not make sense:
Mar 04 2016    158,427,203,767    -3.10%    1,134,066,098 GH/s
Feb 19 2016    163,491,654,909    13.44%    1,170,318,852 GH/s
Feb 07 2016    144,116,447,847    20.06%    1,031,625,717 GH/s

Huge jumps... price is down.  Will be another interesting week.

I have reached the point of I have no idea what will happen in terms of price or diff.

The only saving grace for me is the solar array is not quite done yet.

So I have not had to decide to stay with 6 avalon6s and wait for bitfury gear to fill the array.

At least I can wait a week or two to decide that.

I'm still going positive. Mining farms will have to be positive before halving and i'm sure the hashrate and difficulty will explode soon.
+3.2 for me, because I ALWAYS GO POSITIVE. and I am right 50% of the time haha :)

So we have had our first full Day of the new Period and we seem to be back in positive territory with +4.17% 150 Blocks. Far too early to really know what is going on but a punchy start to Today which has pulled the Run rate for the period so far to +7.5%. As we all know anything can happen from here....

Congrats to winner  tertius993 !  Thanks for Philip for having contest,   at +7.1  last time i wasn't  even close but think my pick this time will be close to that . I have learned quite a bit  about bitcoin in general just reading this thread regularly,  so thanks everyone.

So Day 2 ended up up at +2.78% 148 Blocks. Day 1 was +4.17% and the Run Rate at the moment for this period is currently +5.39%, so we are still finding our new level but looking like it might be in the +4% to +6% region?

Price is hanging around 409.  I liked the 440+ area much better.  But it seems like it's pretty slow moving.   I really want to see some movement before having upwards (I hope it happens).

So far pretty happy with low numbers on bitwisdom.  Still cant explain it.... but happy none the less.

The price had a lot of trouble holding 400 over the Weekend, but at least we did not slip too low, but as you say would be good to see it going strongly up and clearing 450.

Yea, price was a bit up and down over the weekend, but it's holding its own.  I can't see any direct relationship between price and diff, which is counter-intuitive to me, but it is what it is.  I would be afraid of a rising price if it could be linked directly to rising diff, but that does not seem to be the case recently.  Another small negative would be great, would like to see diff below 150G, but if it has to be positive hopefully it will stay under 5% (even though 5% of 160G is still a lot of new hash!).

126 blocks in the time it takes for 127 blocks

I would love for that to stay the course .  143 blocks a day for the rest of the diff period works for me.

Darn it became 1.32%, but hopefully it'll come down now. Does anyone else feel like we have reached a difficulty peak, and should come back down as summer comes around?

yes more gear is above the equator so it is warming up and heat becomes a problem.

this could hold hash rates down a bit.

picks are going to start in about 20-26 hours.

Looking at the graphs that are available, whatever was turned on right at the adjustment is still on, that hash looks pretty constant and it might not go away.  Hopefully that will be the only addition and diff will stay ~ level this period.

A flat diff for the next few months would make me a happy camper.  This s7 ain't going to pay itself you know...paid 4.7 btc with shipping, it has returned a little more than half (i havent calculated it exactly), its on kano pool so thats good.  To get the other 1/3 to 1/2 in btc....its going to be tough (or long).  unless btc increases in price, a flat diff is the best thing to happen for s7 resell value.  also would help if bitmain stopped selling freakin batches

The problem on flat difficulty is there is no facts out there.  I still have yet to hear a good reason that is confirmed as fact that could cause huge jumps up multiple periods in a row.   Now it's going low... it's crazy

Price I'm just hoping does not dive.  I keep hoping to be in 440-450 area but I think we have a ways to go till then.

Well I found this story about a new bitcoin mine opeing up in Ghana, http://www.coindesk.com/africa-internet-pioneer-bitcoin-mining-ghana/, but at the end they only claim to have a capacity of "several hundred terahash" which wouldn't show up on a network difficulty adjustment.  Of course they could be underselling their capacity... or there could be multiple "small" mines coming online.

Price heading down a little at 409... so could be better.  Hope price goes up.

So Day 3 and the pace seems to have picked up a bit with +6.94% and 154 Blocks. Today has started very aggressively and at 8 Hours in is running at +45%. Some of that will be variance which will wash out during the Day, but I think some Hash has been added. It is of course now lifting the period to date Run Rate which is at +4.6%. Never a dull moment........

So far in this period the trend is up, but the good news is that the up trend isn't as vertical as it has been.  I'm guessing that averaged with the last adjustment the net will be ~ 0.

Phil could multiply his pick by -1 and he might end up in the running.  I think if Phil ever wins then that means we all have to send him 0.1btc.  ;D

Mar 04 2016    158,427,203,767    -3.10%    1,134,066,098 GH/s
Feb 19 2016    163,491,654,909    13.44%    1,170,318,852 GH/s
Feb 07 2016    144,116,447,847    20.06%    1,031,625,717 GH/s

We had 2 in a row of huge increase.  Then a negative... which I still cannot understand.  This period we will gain that negative amount plus some... will be interesting to see how much though.

I think the big increases are just that, a lot of hash, aided and abetted by the S7 / Avalon6 / approaching Halving / high price / impending Holiday, was added by the big farms. I think it was those very large increases that then caused the negative.

When any system changes by a large amount in a short period of time the mechanism that is controlling it tends to overcompensate (aka adjusting the shower temperature to quickly) and I think that is what the last difficulty change did. We are now coming back from the overcorrection and probably a small increase on top of that?

The cats are still giddy over the last reduction. They're playing like crazy (sometimes in the middle of the night, which is not much fun for my wife and I). But at least they're not hiding under the couch anymore due to the insane increases we suffered.

Still it was a bit painful getting this guess out of them. Anything north of a few percent rankles their fur.

Really not moving a ton right now kinda in same spot in bitwisdom:

Bitcoin Difficulty:    158,427,203,767
Estimated Next Difficulty:    166,349,397,372 (+5.00%)
Adjust time:    After 978 Blocks, About 6.4 days
Hashrate(?):    1,265,158,995 GH/s

Price has went up a little to over 420 in past 24 hours... so nothing big but still headed in right direction.

I missed it to I have been sick this week.  Finnaly able to type more then a few words.   I tried to do a few posts earlier in week... by the time I got to end they were some of the ugliest posts I had ever done.. so did not put much this week.

I think around 5 would be my guess.  I still can't explain why we went crazy jumps and slowed down.  Makes 0 sense to me, and what scares me is it could happen again.  I think when next gen hits spec we will see some big jumps, but when... no clue.  Also could still see some jumps from some making last gen ROI.  I would imagine bitmain still could do S7's internally and make ROI a few times.  But if they do ... that is the question.

So Yesterday was fairly unique with exactly 144 Blocks. Also the downward trend that started Yesterday has continued with us off to a very slow start this Morning. As ever to early in the Day to tell but with luck some Hash has been removed from the network? Today's run rate, 8 Hours in, is -3.8% and run rate for this Period to date +4.95%.

If this trend were to continue we could end up zero or negative, but I suspect things will pick up...

93 blocks made in 16 ½ hours    means 93/99 = -6.06% rate for those 16 ½ hours   would be nice for this to do just that for the next few days.

A    -6%   rate for the next 706 blocks  would drop us close to 1%  something to hope for

According to www.blockchain.info/stats there are only 168 nodes connected (slowly rising, normal is 300+). Maybe thats why we have seen the lower hashrate yesterday.

If we get another negative... I will even more confused.  It was like we had a race going on lots of hash hitting all around.... then negative.  If we get another negative I for sure will not know what to think.

I wish I knew if someone was planning on upgrade soon and clearing spots, that would make sense.  Or A1's finnaly coming out of commission in china data centers.  I have thought about a ton of theories every day but non can be backed up by facts.

I had a last minute trip out of town and also didn't get a pick in this week, but that's ok because looking at the trend the network seems to be dialing back every so slightly and I would have predicted a constant slight up-trend.  Most likely still be a positive, but not too drastic.

So the Downward trend for the Period continues, as to what is going on? It could just be that there is very little going on, with all that we have seen so far being nothing more than Variance and we are going to end up around Zero for the Period with no net loss or gain in Hash on the Network?

Price is up just a little around 413 atm.  It's been hanging around that number up and down a little for past 24 hours. Decent article on price: http://www.coindesk.com/bitcoin-stabilizes-at-420-but-still-moving-sideways/

What do you guys think is the debates on size holding price down?   Or think it's a number of other factors.

The size or classic vs core node issue is sending money into alt coins..

ETH  NMC  UNO PPC all had good rallies.

As much as I prefer BTC right now I am hedging with PPC and I have more then 1200 PPC coins.  I also sold some btc for fiat as this block size war has me a bit nervous.

So the Downward trend for the Period continues, as to what is going on? It could just be that there is very little going on, with all that we have seen so far being nothing more than Variance and we are going to end up around Zero for the Period with no net loss or gain in Hash on the Network?

83 blocks in  12 ½ hours   should be  75  so pace has picked back up

It seems to be a debate that does not go away.  Some of the more radical ideas on fixing it are what scare me.  I think it's going to be a tough battle on it.  Guess it's another one of those wait and see.

And I really don't like wait and see things that I don't have a solid anwser what future will be.

I know this much, the answer isn't as simple as "make blocks bigger".  If it were we'd of solved it a while ago.

I do not like the XT or classic fork attempts, to me that is two guys trying to hijack the entire bitcoin network and bring it under their control via a fork.

The answer to the block size problem has not been found yet, but it will be in time, and it will be solved more eloquently than simply proving bigger blocks.

At least price is holding above $400 and not tanking like the last time the block size debate was raging full strength and XT came out.

No I agree  long term solve is not to endlessly expand it. (block size)

But I feel a move to 2mb and revisit this in December or January would be a good short term solution.

It's actually not a "fork attempt", but an attempt to solve a problem.  You see, the goal is not the fork, it's the improvement.  The way we see it can have an impact on our reactions and opinions.  The perceptions of the taken actions are often more important than the actions themselves.  I don't think hijacking the entire Bitcoin network by controlling it is something possible.  Do you?

Ethereum just forked.  Nice and easy.  You know why everything went smoothly?  Because people agreed even if they didn't think exactly the same.

It will be a combination of every good ideas, including block size limit increase.  The question is: when?  Will it be too late?  My fear is halving will be catastrophic.

That being said, I'm confident there will be peace and great things will happen with Bitcoin after the halving and scaling issues are solved.

I think you are right about certain people trying to control what happens next.   I'm not sure on the amount but a few I have seen.... put themself or company obviously as benefiting from decisions.

I think we will battle it for a while sadly as so many have hidden agenda's.  And even if something is decided.... after the ones who "lost" will keep putting out info.  So hard for anyone to win.

It is why I like baby steps. The move  to 2mb is stop gap but here in NJ and in any cold weather place with asphalt based roads in the spring road crews come out on a good weather day and patch winter caused potholes.

Everyone knows it is temporary fix but they do the temporary fix when they can in order to give some time to users of the road with a better fix down the road.

This temporary pot hole patch would be helpful in that it would show people can agree on some thing short term.

They maybe we can assess how it works in the short term.

The first five words at https://bitcoinclassic.com/ is "We are hard forking bitcoin", that looks pretty clearly like a fork attempt to me.

I do not agree their goal is improvement, I think that is a byproduct, a way to entice people over to their fork and seize development control.

I don't think hijacking the entire Bitcoin network by controlling it is something possible.
There was a statement in the faq on the xt site (that probably exists somewhere on the classic site, too) that gave all dispute resolution powers to 2 developers - hardly what I would call decentralized.  I don't trust people with agenda like that.

Well that's why I was talking about perceptions, if your perception is their goal is to take over Bitcoin, you'll interpret everything they say that way.  But if you take a step back and think, their solution is to increase the max block size and the only way to achieve it is by a hard fork, so technically that's what they develop.  The way they express it on the site is direct, probably to be as clear as possible and not trying to hide the hard fork path.

BTW, I'm trying to be as objective as possible when I say that.  There's no obvious choice in this story.  I actually think the best thing would have been Core increasing the max block size earlier.  Everybody would be working on all the other ways to scale and productivity would not be slowed down by media/community management.  All the drama would have been inexistent and developers would all be drinking beer together. :)

I don't trust people with hidden agenda neither.  Once again, are you sure their intentions were to control the system, or maybe it was to propose a way to break deadlocks with some kind of benevolent dictatorship or whatever like the way it works in a lot of other open source projects?  I don't have the answer, I actually don't know a lot about anything, but I'm good in asking questions to make sure everything has been well thought.  ;)

It would appear that heavy math and cryptography don't actually eliminate the "human element" from Bitcoin. As long as folks "trust it", it can work. Remove that, and no amount of math will save it (IMHO).

In some ways it's kind of amusing to watch. As always: Don't spend/invest/waste more on Bitcoin than you can afford to lose (please don't take offense at the word "waste").

Set a max loss cap and do not go over it is simply the best way to think about the game.

Or as you say do not spend/invest/waste more on Bitcoin than you can afford to lose.

If we end up under 5... i will be decently happy.  I can handle jumps in this area with a little over 2 day's left it's looking possible.

I for the life of me cannot explain the negative last change.  And that still scares me, I just have not seen a good verified reason.   I am still hoping for a while of current gen mining before next gen.  Eventually we are going to hit next gen, and I see some big jumps coming there.

The problem with block size will be explained in my opinion.
This will become an impulse for the strong growth on BTC/USD pair.
Uncertainty about the future of BTC makes a lot of people coming out of the BTC. BTC is accumulated by the strong hands. It's part of my hypothesis.

Makes sense.  Until robots, IoT, autonomous systems, become massive users of Bitcoin.  :)  I guess then trust in the system won't be a factor for it to survive.  Nodes are run by humans... For now.  Well it could actually be a realty in the future that nodes will be run by the autonomous systems using it.  lol

Who knows!

It can stay stuck at $415 for as long as it wants as far as I'm concerned, it was stuck at $215 for too long!

I am kind of excited for the halving to get here, I think it's going to kill off a lot of the big farms, we might just see home mining become viable again.  If not this halving then almost certainly the one following, unless btc price goes to the moon.

The problem is if they kill off the big farms, this means most hobby/home miners are gone.   And if that happens I see BTC going down in price, but I could be wrong.

The big farms I think will still be here for the most part though.  I think there are two paths most will follow.  1) They have so low of electricity they keep running and it makes no difference to them 2) With info structure already built they switch to next gen gear and are good for quite a while running it.

I would agree though I'm ready for having just to see what it does.

Need to remember that we have just been through an unofficial, difficulty driven, halving. What we saw was some older miners being removed by Bitmain & BW plus I expect most other Farms. So a small pullback in difficulty but then back to business as usual. I think so long as the 14 / 16nm products are available in time we will see the same again.

Well, here's a new Chinese pool I just stumbled upon and its already sporting 30+PH: http://www.1hash.com/

Pools like this is why diff is going up again.  I'm not sure who is behind 1hash, but I bet there are a couple other pools out there of decent size that not many of us in the west have heard of yet.

It's so hard to follow right now speculation is pretty crappy. We just don't have enough facts to know reasons.  Just like hitting negative... lots of people guessed there were rumors.  But nothing official.

If the hash rate at the moment of difficulty change is ~1218000000 GH/s, difficulty rises approx. +7.4%
If the hash rate at the moment of difficulty change is ~1220000000 GH/s, difficulty rises approx. +7.58%

How I came up with this estimate:
Based on history, difficulty divided by the hash rate (GH/s) equals approx. 139,69838.. and it has been about this way through the difficulty history.

139,69838 * 1218000000 equals difficulty of 170152626840
139,69838 * 1220000000 equals difficulty of 170432023600

yeah but  that  1218ph  is not for the last 1850 blocks.  by the way it would be good for you if it where as your guess was  7.5 iirc ;D

here is the best "real time"    lazy number

https://bitcoincharts.com/

Blocks   403094
Total BTC   15.327M

Difficulty   158427203767
Estimated   165490408235 in 106 blks

Network total   1103595.192 Thash/s
Blocks/hour   5.84 / 617 s

divide  16549 by 15842 = 1.044628  or  4.4628% jump with 106 blocks

the best 'real time' number is

2016/336 =  6  that is zero %

so I think block 401194  was the first block  this diff jump

401194 (Main Chain)   2016-03-05 00:31:41
403095 (Main Chain)   2016-03-17 16:17:52

so 1901 blocks in 304 hours 20 minutes should be 1826 = 4.11%     I am not sure and need to check this

I checked and got  this

401184 (Main Chain)   2016-03-04 23:25:56
403096 (Main Chain)   2016-03-17 16:30:08

1912 blocks in  305 hours  should be  1830

 so 1912/1830 = 4.48%   with 104 to go

If we drop just a little bit to 3.9 we end up have 40 days of 1% growth.

On feb 19 we were diff of 163.5
on mar 4  we were diff of 158.4
on march 17 we would be a diff of 164.6  that would last to march 30 or so

so from feb 19 to march 30    we would be   163.5 + 158.4 + 164.6 =

162.1 average for a 40 day time period.

If I had said on feb 19  we would average 162.1 diff from until march 30  most everyone would say you are fucking nuts.

Well if we end up with less then 5 I cant complaign to much.  I'm pretty happy with that compared to some other changes.  Also price is up just a tad at 418.  So guess not to bad.

Part of me is ready to see next gen gear hit.... and other half if wanting to ride current gen as long as I can.   I think next gen we will see another huge jump after production.

Under 5% raise is not too bad. It makes ROI this silly S7 a tiny bit more likely.
