Title: Another faucet dies. Does anyone care?
Post by: BitBustah on March 10, 2016, 08:51:00 PM
I hesitated a while wether or not to post this message. Here it goes anyway.

I will soon be shutting down my faucet. I spent hundreds of hours coding it and I feel really depressed by the decision I had to made.
I enjoyed making making my site and -most of the time- enjoyed running and maintaining it.

Today I don't enjoy it anymore. I can't handle the bot attacks anymore. I got another bot attack today. I have some serious anti-bot measurements so luckily I didn't lose a lot of money.

The IP addresses used in the attack were all owned by "Trusov Ilya Igorevych".
More info about this company/man can be found here: http://www.port43whois.com/?query=5.189.204.12

This person/company has hundreds, perhaps even thousands of IP addresses, all over the world. A lot of them are NOT marked as vpn/proxy traffic by NastyHosts.
Some of you might know that NastyHosts is the standard security IP checker in the FaucetinaBOX script. It goes without saying that A LOT of faucets are currently being attacked and are losing money.

It hurts me to see that people here on this forum are offering/joining CAPTCHA services. Those who join probably don't understand that these services are used to bypass the faucets security measurements. Faucets will put up anti-bot links, additional captchas, ... but it has no use; The scammers will eventually win.

I always keep wondering: How many of the people that claim at my faucet joined these CAPTCHA services to earn something extra? All this just to make a few lousy dollars. It is stealing. Nothing more, nothing less. I start to believe that people who are interested in BTC will sell out for just a few lousy dollars. There are no more moral values in the BTC world. It makes me sick. I always believed in the kindness and honesty of others.

So, soon another faucet will dissappear. Does anyone care?
I already know the answer.

Edited to add:
If anyone is interested in buying my faucet: Open for all offers.

Sad some people abuse the system and make it for honest people impossible to enjoy the Faucets. Really hope such people get once be beaten down by other bigger hackers.

I am really sorry for that. It makes me angry to see these kind of problems. When i saw your topic and started to read your post, i guessed the issue was traffic. I wish it was because i would start visiting your site for support and tell other faucet lovers to do the same. I hate faucets disappering. I wish there was something you can do against bot attacks. I don`t have much knowledge of scripting therefore i never understood how come one can solve this captches with script. I know that putting extra anti-bot actions are pushing faucet users away. I hope you can be more succesful with your next project mate. Best of luck!

Sad it has come to this, I shall miss what you do for the community.
Giving satoshis out is a real bonus for some people in the world, they actually depend on it.

As for that scammer who hides with IPs he has spoiled what a great job you do, nothing short of being a thief in my eyes.

misterbit  has a great idea with his to do list, "to do yes" go do it.

And whilst I am here, thanks to all the faucet owners who help to spread the word about bitcoin.

Except these
galaxybitcoin.ru Scammer

starbitcoin.ru Scammer

I see a lot of faucet everyday just drying out and don't coming back and a lot of scammers/fake faucets that "steal" our time and don't pay.
Sorry to hear about you giving up... hope you try something else and keep a faucet for the honest community.

Damn man, so sad to see your faucet go. I always have these arguments with people that invite me to join these captcha services, and the first question I ask them is "what's your favorite faucet?" and when they answer, I tell them that they're potentially helping shut down their favorite faucet. But some idiots just don't get it... A few bucks, and they jeopardize their OWN shit...

Makes me wish there was a central depository where you can submit IP addresses (with proof) of known botters/scammers/bruteforcers/etc., which would only work if EVERYONE used it. If you created this depository, which would keep a running list of scammer IP addresses & ranges, would people use it? Make it the standard for faucetowners... Give it a catchy name like bit-busters.org or cryptocatchers.org or something... I know that there have been several people in the forums that have tried to spread their bad IP's, but that's non-user friendly... Make a centralized depo, and I think you have a gold mine.

Thoughts?

Thanks for the advice, but I'm not a novice at this. This guy has so many IPs (thousands) that the .htaccess file will not work. It will become too big in size to work. One could use PHP...

The problem is that this guy has 1000s of IP addresses. There's no beginning, and even more, no end. People like this keep investing in more IPs..

Title: Re: Another faucet dies. Does anyone care?

Thank you all for the kind words.

It's getting problematic to block IPs. Scammers (and companies offering VPN/proxies) are investing in new IP addresses every day. Before those are detected it's already too late.

My faucet is doing pretty well against scammers. Again, I have some great security features. I just don't wanna fight anymore. It's over.

I might be offering (paid) services against scammers. I'm not sure yet.. Everybody wants everything for free nowadays. I must say I have considered cheating myself... but if I did that I probably couldn't live with myself.

Sorry if this is dumb question but what exactly is your faucet? You mention that you are taking offers for the faucet if anyone wants to buy it... Well it is a bit hard to make any kind of offer when I have no idea which faucet you own. For example "freebitco.in" and "BeztBTC4Free4Realz.tk.co.uk" are probably in hugely different price categories.

but i was quite suprised about how they find it profitable to attact faucet while paying for those captcha solvers. IF you don't give like more than 1000 sat that it will be loss for them. Keeping reward low with funcaptcha and setting referal commision so low may solve this bot attact. save from thiss attacks

I don't get it. Recently I have seen many faucets that have additional anti-bot measures. Like e-mail confirmation, simple anti-bot quizzes. Some of them  have more fun to solve than Funcaptcha   ;)

Thank you all for the kind words.

Adding additional anti-bot measurements will result in less real people claiming. I've seen it before. A lot of people are tired of clicking extra links, solving puzzles etc etc..

The scammers are ruining it for both sides: The ruin it for the faucet owners aswell as the honest players.

I too was amazed to see that I get scammed for a lousy 500 satoshi. Since the last attack came from the owner/company who owns thousands of IP addresses I can only assume that there are big "organised" teams behind this. Who else has access to that many IP addresses?

There are a few ways to get a hold of numerous IP addresses, one of these being controlling a botnet.  I doubt any sort of "team" would collaborate to scrape a few dollars from individuals faucets, it just wouldn't be worth the time.

A botnet infected hundreds of servers from thesame company? People without "legit" access to thousands of IPs belonging to 1 company? Seems unlikely to me. Smells like an inside job.

It could be a 1 person operation.

How come I don't have issues on FG with bots?

Regarding captcha, that's nonsense.

Why would anyone pay 2 cents to solve a captcha, if he's getting < 2 cents?

User signup won't solve anything. Read the "Micro Earnings" threads; Users hate signing up.
If a scammer has access to multiple IPs, he will also have access to multiple domains, email addresses, ...

Make e-mail confirmation when user withdraw, I thought its best way to avoid bots and scammers.
