Title: Top Islamic State commander dead a week after US-led airstrike in Syria
Post by: zenitzz on March 15, 2016, 03:21:36 AM
A top Islamic State group commander known as Omar the Chechen has died after being injured in a US-led coalition strike in northeastern Syria, the Pentagon confirmed Monday.

The announcement would appear to clear up the fate of the notorious Omar al-Shishani a week after a US official said the most-wanted militant had been targeted in a 4 March attack on the jihadist’s convoy.

“We believe he subsequently died of his injuries,” Navy Capt Jeff Davis, a Pentagon spokesman, told AFP.

On Sunday, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights monitoring group said Shishani had been “clinically dead” for several days.

Shishani, the nom de guerre of Tarkhan Batirashvili, was one of the Isis leaders most wanted by Washington, which put a $5m bounty on his head.

He comes from the Pankisi Gorge, a mainly ethnic Chechen region of the former Soviet state of Georgia.

I swear about a month ago they said the guy had been killed but it was not verified. Some one else will slip right into place, this is not something that will go away over night.

It is good news, it won't solve the problem but helps send them into disarray and confusion for a while. It truely is an evil organization and deserves wiping out, it's just a shame they hide among civilians.

Although they are few in number, ethnic Chechens and other mountaineers (such as Daghestanis, Ingush, Kabards, and Cherkess) are the backbone of the Caliphate Army. They have gained valuable experience by taking part in the various post-Soviet conflicts (Chechen wars, Osset-Ingush War, Abkhaz war.etc). Very few of the ISIS terrorists from the other countries have such military experience.
