Title: [HELP] Gif avatar not acceptable ? Post by: JustDie on March 16, 2016, 10:21:38 AM Quote Select the avatar you want to upload. It must be no more than 120px wide, 80px tall, and 100 KiB in size. It must be a PNG, GIF, or JPEG image. It must be safe for work. To remove your avatar, submit this form without choosing any file to upload. but when im upload GIF it wont showing anything ,, can someone tell me how to use GIF avatar ? Title: Re: [HELP] Gif avatar not acceptable ? Post by: Lutpin on March 16, 2016, 10:26:06 AM Is it an animated gif?
Does the file meet all the other requirements? I've just changed my avatar to (the same one but) a .gif file. As you can see, there has been no problem (direct link (https://bitcointalk.org/useravatars/avatar_520313.gif)). So it's no forum problem, but has to be something with the gif you're trying. Title: Re: [HELP] Gif avatar not acceptable ? Post by: stiffbud on March 16, 2016, 01:15:38 PM Same problem as when I tried uploading a gif avatar before. It didn't also worked for me, it was uploaded but the gif is not moving.

It didn't also worked for me, it was uploaded but the gif is not moving. Because AFAIK animated gifs aren't supported/allowed anymore. Those you see around have uploaded their animated avatar ages ago.Static gifs however aren't a problem at all, as my avatar shows. A quick forum search revealed the following: Old account (i.e ~2-3 years old ) were allowed [animated] gif avatars. But now it is not allowed not any member rank but still some old accounts have their [animated] gif avatar as their account avatar and is pretty in demand as now it is not allowed and user find [animated] gif avatars more attractive so it does make sense. If you try to put up an [animated] gif avatar it will refuse up and ask you to put up a .png or .jpeg or any non-animated [gif] avatar. Post by: actmyname on March 16, 2016, 02:58:44 PM Animated gifs could also be two frames of flashing images, which is a potential cause of seizures. That's not necessarily something that's good. I doubt that's the main reason for banning animated avatars, but that's one factor that could be involved in it. It could also just be annoying, most likely, to see a bunch of animations everywhere you go on the forum. I suspect that may be one of the reasons. (It would be fairly obnoxious to see a bunch of memes plastered on the left everywhere)

Post by: Lutpin on March 16, 2016, 03:34:00 PM Btw, what is a static gif? I don't see your avatar moving. Well, first of all, a gif is only an image/file format (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GIF), so not all gifs have to be animated (/moving).There are static (not moving/animated) gifs, aswell as animated ones. Since the latter are not supported anymore for new avatars, I ofc couldn't upload an animated one, however, my avatar is a gif, as you can see here: https://bitcointalk.org/useravatars/avatar_520313.gif Title: Re: [HELP] Gif avatar not acceptable ? Post by: PakistanHockeyfan on March 23, 2016, 01:18:05 AM Hm. I actually noticed some users with gif avatars so I do believe they're accepted. I think there's a specific gif size they take but other than that, I'm positive that gif images are accepted daily and can actually be quite fun to watch! I normally enjoy gif avatar's more than regular stagnant avatars either way. I do recommend speaking to a moderator of sorts if there indeed is a size limitation for gif avatars.

Animated gifs used to be allowed in the past. They are no longer. Those that have an animated gif as avatar now, have had it for a very long time. Title: Re: [HELP] Gif avatar not acceptable ? I really am not quite certain on the matter of the situation here. Perhaps the head of the website isn't realizing there's still people occupying gif avatars for some reason. There are simpler solutions anyway, e.g. dont store all deleted posts ever created. #4 Newbies are no longer allowed to post pictures because some used it to spam #5 If you no longer want animated gifs, is it fair to remove the few already established over the years? So yes, it definitely has to do with the size of the gif, or maybe the ranking. Hopefully the admin will come and answer our questions. Title: Re: [HELP] Gif avatar not acceptable ? Animated GIFs for Avatars that exist today are left over from when they were once allowed. At one time in the past, everyone could have animated gifs for avatars , until it was discovered to be used as an hacking attack vector. Because of that gif attack, all animated gifs for accounts have been disabled. Any animated gifs on avatars you see today are the originals, prior to when Theymos disabled the ability. If you now remove your animated gif on your account, you can not get it back and will be like everyone else. It has nothing to do with size of the gif data or ranking of the account. Shorena is correct. Edit: added "for Avatars" to be more clear between animated gif pictures and animated gif for avatars Title: Re: [HELP] Gif avatar not acceptable ? Edit: added "for Avatars" to be more clear between animated gif pictures and animated gif for avatars I believe, because the attack vector arose from the ability to change and upload new animated gifs for avatars. The few accounts today that still have animated gifs for avatars do not pose any threat. The issues has to do with uploading malicious code into the site. Any animated gifs that remain are safe. The attack that caused the disabling of the ability to have animated avatars was in October 2013. That is why the OP and other users are not aware of this. It is actually an old issue. I was unaware of this. Thank you for taking the time to sit down and explain it though. I do believe you, but is there a thread I can read for this attack? Just trying to get more acquainted to the website's history. This way I won't have to ask too many novice questions. Title: Re: [HELP] Gif avatar not acceptable ?
