Post by: crazyearner on January 30, 2013, 09:45:50 PM
O kso below is some posts and pictures of the new rig. And also updated with a 2nd rig from unknown source however this has 4 modules in it.

Looks like the race has started and BFG are now behind. I sure as hell would be mining and going crazy with that bad boy.

So what's this "secret" that will make Avalon worth it all in the end? Can we get a closer look at one of those 3 modular boards?

I'm assuming the "secret" is that you can add another board, boosting the hash speed to ~88Gh/s at under the same ~400W.

Taadaaa!!!

Hopefully someone will disassemble the unit after they report on the power consumption and hashrate.

That's a massive single heatsink, I guess there are multiple modules that connect to the visible PCB 'backplane' via ribbon cables. Then 3 backplanes at ~22 GH/s @ ~6 watts per gigahash yields ~132w which could be easily powered by a pair of 6-pin PCIe connectors. Top of the unit looks like a bundle of just yellow and black so.. PCIe connectors. Can't wait for someone to tear this thing apart.

Looks like the air intake for the PSU is close to the bottom PCB.

The heat sink fins are widely spaced, so little heat and a slow fan? 133W per heatsink..

You have to take out of the case, mine in the nude as tradition dictates.

Ummm No. If you can add another board, then it will use 1/3 more power, putting you at 88GH/s @ 530W. You don't just add 1/3 more chips and expect a 0% increase in power consumption.

Am sure once he gets to terms and grips with it he will use it. The thing I do not like is no instructions with it on how to use and its using Chinese plug. Would of expected to be made for US power.

We can only await to see what the progress of this is. However I will be placing some orders for them in the next few hours for batch #2

Maybe. If he really spent 4x the standard amount of shipping Jeff's, it might be another week or more before the rest hit the market.

Don't worry your ignorance and inability to accept corrections already did that for you in your other thread.  To avoid any revisioning of history you weren't a pessimist you flat out claims it was IMPOSSIBLE to produce this product.  Not that Avalon was a scam but that it simply couldn't be done. Of course as pointed out even IF Avalon was a scam your reasoning was still idiotic.

For existing FPGA design the best can be had is 23MHps/J. There is no reason to anticipate an improvement in FPGA power efficiency, yes, there can be marginal reduction of overhead and the FPGA can be scaled up, but it's efficiency will not increase all that much. Based on existing designs we can anticipate 25MH/J for FPGA. There is nothing special abut ASIC, most ASIC vendors just use a custom programmed FPGA; this is called FPGA to ASIC conversion. So at best ASIC will be 50MHps/J; and i am being VERY generous here.

Possibly bad news for anyone who was backing another company and hoping to recoup their purchase costs quickly though. Only the lucky first wave of Avalon clients will manage that, lucky guys.

*Bitcoin ONLY

Simple version:
It murders GPU miners in their sleep.

You can't buy one today.  Batch 1 already sold out.

Batch 2 will pre-order "soon" (tomorrow?).  $1499 for 66GH/s (68GH/s observed in testing).  Payment in BTC only.  No cancellations.  Expected shipping in March.

aww :(

understandable though, taking an hour to tear it down and [hopefully] reassemble it correctly would cause him several bitcoins of lost productivity and potentially mess up his unit.

i want detailed pics and specs and all that glory tho!

Bitcoin Foundation will have no excuse for not ripping their unit apart, so hopefully those pics and videos will soon be forthcoming.  Jeff's blog makes clear that he wasn't supposed to receive his unit yesterday - it sounds like there's something planned PR-wise for today and the delay on Batch 2 orders also suggests that Avalon's waiting for something specific to occur.

I wouldn't be at all surprised if they had some sort of production problem and are milking the CNY/customs excuses to give them time to fix it.

I suspected that as well.  Especially since the extremely high profile first unit, hand delivered for review, is constantly freezing and requiring reboots.

Runs 24 hrs straight no reboot or freezing for the most part this was an issue with the type of pool settings. See  https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=140539.160 (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=140539.160)

More good news.  Machine uptime and cgminer uptime are both now 24 hours.  Pool was BTC Guild, and stratum seems to most commonly use a share difficulty of 32.00000.

Now going to play with p2pool some more, with higher difficulty rates.

It sounds like a theory of a memleak is certainly plausible, at least.

Survived 18 hours so far on p2pool without a restart, either machine or cgminer.

Mining at difficulty 16.0, with stratum, to local p2pool/bitcoind.

Miner "freeze" just past hour 20, mining p2pool:  openwrt and cgminer status are accessible, but no work is being retrieved from / sent to p2pool.

Manually restarted.

That, or they decided that rather than finalize all the wafers they would just finish metal on one and see how it turned out before committing all their wafers. Now that they know there's no issue, they have to get everything finished for the rest of the wafers.

Obviously that's just speculation and Avalon has (rather intentionally IMO) cultivated the idea that they won't give updates and products will just show up, so it's hard to say much at this point.

How long until Avalon is a scam again. A week or two without any more asic being delivered?

That device has already paid for itself. Now he's making over $200 profit every single day. I'd be quite happy with that situation.

Agreed. What Avalon has accomplished in such a short time frame is amazing.

Not yet.  Maybe another 1-2 days.

http://www.alloscomp.com/bitcoin/calculator says 68 GH/s is just over 10 BTC a day...

Sure, that's the predicted average.  Machine/miner reliability, bad luck, the pool's cut, costs related to pool hopping and other factors definitely impact income.  p2pool's income was something like 50% below predictions.

I would mine solo if I were you. A block solved every 2.5 days on average.

Wow, quite the toll on expected earnings!

Already tried and failed mining solo with: bitcoind, p2pool, eloipool.  And I know enough to know that my own pushpool, unmodified, cannot keep up either :)

Need to hack pushpool or use another proxy server that can keep up.

Have you tried BitMinter?

I had good luck with http://poolserverj.org/ I put mysql on a SSD and it kept up with 30 gighash on a old core 2 1% cpu usage. Was fun to query the db to get the current speed.

SELECT (COUNT(id) * 4294967296)/3600/1000000 as mhash_60,count(id) as total_shares FROM shares WHERE shares.time >= DATE_SUB( NOW(), interval 60 minute) and our_result = true;

Set up eloipool with the difficulty set to some high value (eg. 64 with ShareTarget = 0x0000000003ffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffff). Mine with getwork, not getblocktemplate. And make sure roll-n-time is functional. That setup should be able to handle hundreds of Ghash/s easily. That's what I use for my FPGA farm.

IIRC your pushpool and p2pool both hard-code the diff to 1. Isn't it why they can't keep up with the many getwork calls?

Dynamic targetting was used, which should in theory achieve same... maybe high+static is better.

Multiple answers...

pushpool has several known inefficiencies... besides being single-threaded for database + network + rpc, it simply proxies every client getwork to bitcoind, with some rewriting.  bitcoind cannot keep up with that, once the miner load (historically difficulty 1.0) reaches a certain point, the whole system cannot keep up.

Pool ops either solve this by scaling up the number of bitcoind processes (machines), or run pool server software that supports some amount of internal work generation, easing bitcoind's load.

Yes, maybe. I have never tested dynamic targeting.
