Easy, it should be self sustaining so:

1. Plug in network cable to router

2. Power up

3. find it's local ip

4. http or ssh into it (It runs linux open-wrt i think)

5. read readme.txt

6. setup mining  pool and temp monitor limits

7. start miners

Avalon's aren't intended to be "ASICs for dummies".  They're a niche product for techie people who don't need their hands held.  Jeff had no problems getting it up and running without instructions.

If you need paperwork or instructions then you should avoid mining.

That's just Avalon using their head to save a few trees, everyone knows the first thing any male does with something new is throw away the instructions.

that is so true.

ROFL
Guys,
If you are afraid from the woods just do not go there:)
Wait patiently until someone who has no fear brings you there.

Have you ever been able to make soho router trough web interface?
I guess it is too hard right:)

The power cord thing is typical when you order stuff from China. It's just a matter of taking the power cords from one of your current miners or an old Pentium or something.

As for the lack of instructions, I think that helps you "smuggle" it into the country. Or perhaps it could make it harder instead as you have to explain to your customs authorities what the hell this box is.

Yea! I can see it now,

Customs officer- "What is this box?"
Josh- "Here's a quarter and buy your self a clue!"

If you were following the IRC channel, Jeff mentioned that he received "special setup instructions from the mother ship", but did not expand on it any further.

"hmmm Looks like a pull start"

@PuertoLibre - Oh yea!!!  That's how it went. The officer would have loved that ever much. Especially a Chinese one.

The Japanese TSA would have had a better field day.

On IRC, jgarzik went through something like this:

1. Worry about 230V/115V setting - found out PSU is auto switching

2. Plug in unit, fans come on really loud

3. Get help from the "mother ship": Yifu (BitSyncom) called him frantically because they thought it would arrive after Batch #2 sold out (http://garzikrants.blogspot.com/2013/01/avalon-asic-miner-review.html)

4. Find out from Yifu the device was on a static IP: 192.168.0.100 (http://garzikrants.blogspot.com/2013/01/avalon-asic-miner-review.html)

5. Type the IP into his browser, log in to the web interface

6. See jgarzik's post below. On his blog he says it was root / no password. Disregard what he said on IRC.

7. Play around in the web interface

8. Fans slowed down once cgminer was started

9. Tried on bitcoin.cz (slush's pool) and p2pool. P2pool didn't work too well.

Edit: I just read http://garzikrants.blogspot.com/2013/01/avalon-asic-miner-review.html (http://garzikrants.blogspot.com/2013/01/avalon-asic-miner-review.html)

3. Request help from the "mother ship," which probably means he was able to contact Yifu (BitSyncom) for instructions

4. Find out what IP the device got from his DHCP server

5. Type the IP into his browser, log in to the web interface

6. jgarzik specifically mentioned he needed a password reset from Avalon before he could actually access the device

7. Play around in the web interface

8. Fans slowed down once cgminer was started

Clever, a theft in transit preventing password!

Or to to prevent some scumbag to redirect ones brand new ASIC to his own pool!

You wouldn't steal a car!
You wouldn't intercept Bitcoin mining hardware and secretly program it to mine for your own pool.
You wouldn't pose as a courier and deliver it to his wife.
And then steal it back again after he posted a review of the unit.

No, I never said any such thing.

I did say I needed "instructions from the mothership", which was simply the static IP address for which the machine was configured.

Once obtained -- as my review states -- you are able to access the box and set a root password.  Standard OpenWRT behavior and configuration in that regard.

It doesn't matter to me. Thanks for clarifying.

Perhaps by posting the best info I had I elicited your response, which will make it easier for other Avalon users in the future. The review at http://garzikrants.blogspot.com/2013/01/avalon-asic-miner-review.html (http://garzikrants.blogspot.com/2013/01/avalon-asic-miner-review.html) is great. :)
