I'm not surprised, I've hard a lot of bad stuff about Venezula and their economy is utterly shit, they are also pretty much a socialist state, though of course socialists will deny this, it's no surprise they'd try to shut down Bitcoin users because it's evil capitalism.

why they would be arrested for mining ?? It is their computers and they can do whatever they want by it. they are trying to get an income from the internet as their country has a very bad economy specially after the oil prices dropped ! I can not see any legitimate reason for their arrest

They were arrested "because socialism". Venezuela does lots of things without any legitimate reasons.

I have a friend that grew up in Venezuela. The stuff she told me that goes on there is similar to Nazi Germany. Activists being arrested and then disappearing.. shit like that. Socialism is just another word for dictatorship I guess.

I am not surprised at all. Venezuela is police state without human rights just like almost every socialist experiment before. They want absolute control over ppl and money so Bitcoin is their worst nightmare.

Very bad news for all Bitcoin community.
It seems that bitcoin always have problems in non democratic, dictatorship countries like Venezuela now.
I hope this people will be free soon and come back to their families.
In fact, authorities in Venezuela should welcome Bitcoin because their economy collapsing and this may be only chance for them to start over and recover.
I hope they will realize it soon.

If you are mining in places like that you really need to keep it secret. Likewise using BTC. Don't yabber to all your friends what you are doing.

I thought Venezuela had a new govt, or at least had some new legislators - but apparently nothing has changed.

So, as the title says it all, 2 miners have been arrested this week (starting on Pi day/2016) by the political police on the grounds that mining is just dollars (and selling them here on my country is prohibited and penalized with 7 to 12 years in prison).

To add insult to injury, 3 articles on state run media have been published demonizing Bitcoin, using language to imply that terrorism and drugs were just invented the day bitcoin came into light. Not only that, one of those media is a state run tv station (mind you, we have just 6 public tv stations here, 3 are from the government, 1 is for sports) which has shown dwindling levels of reasoning, but this reaches a new low.

"Cryptonoticias" a spanish-talking blog about general crypto stuff has started the media counterattack, as our government isn't letting the Bitcoin community reply on their media about this idiocy they are running with.

If you can, please, retweet (https://twitter.com/johnvillarz/status/710411884671987712) so peeps on external media can pick up the event and help equalizing the media coverage.

That's a very sad news. And those "journalists" from the state media will burn in hell in a helliest way possible. All of them have dollars I'm sure and some of their kids are living in the USA and still they are feeding with this bs their own nation. We had the same situation when Ukraine was the part of the Soviet Union, Hypocrisy at its highest level.

Socialism always leads to totalitarianism because in order to give things to people they didn't earn they have to take it from others. When there is no one left to rob, the society starts consuming its own infrastructure until it collapses. Venezuela is a textbook example of this.

The situation is worsening by the minute peeps.

The "socialistic" shitty tag we have, yeah, that's utter bullshit... not even close...

We just have a capitalistic totalitarism.... yeah, more like it.

Yeah, NOW you do. Remember how it all started? Oh that's right, socialism. Love how people still defend socialism after it destroys their country.

This is turning into a classic spam tactic now that you see from many socialists, they just post "That's not Socialism" constantly and hope those mean Capitalists will go away and let them take over another country.

I'm a little bit suprised because I don't know so much about bitcoin development in Venezuela.

It is not because of that. It is the fact they are selling the bitcoin mined for usd which is against the law there. Socialism, isn't it just special?  ::)

The Venezuelan authorities are once again proving that they are a bunch of retards. The Venezuelan forex reserves have been emptied long back, and they are desperately looking for foreign currency. Mining Bitcoins and exchanging them for United States Dollar or the United Kingdom Pound Sterling is much better than getting hard cash from foreign pedophiles, who camouflage themselves as tourists.

OK thanks for clarification but still this is not right, in my opinion.
There are not yet some specific rules or laws about Bitcoin in any country in the world.
If I want to report income taxes in my country I can't because they don't recognize Bitcoin as ''money''.
Only if I exchange BTC funds to some other currency, as US dollars, and withdraw, I should report this income to my local tax authorities.
As I heard, politic and economic situation in Venezuela is very bad now so if they are smart they should accept Bitcoin, not fight against it.
