Title: Someone just ordered 8 BFL FPGA singles under my name...
Post by: Inspector 2211 on February 03, 2013, 04:51:32 AM
...and the prime suspect is Avalon. Stress out the customer support of the competition a little bit...

I registered for news from Avalon just a few days ago, in order to be in the loop about batch 2 and subsequent batches, but not in my wildest dreams would I have thought that they harvest my password and use it to place 5 fake orders with BFL for a total of 8  FPGA singles.

If the Avalon folks are innocent of this bizarre scheme, I apologize.
But if it walks like a duck, squawks like a duck...

I don't know, either, but I just got 5 order confirmation emails for 2+2+2+1+1 FPGA singles from BFL.
Very odd.

Well, you didn't happen to buy anything from BFL before have you?

You use the same password on both sites?

I just received an email claiming that the I ordered a bfl single. I have a feeling that Avalon's customer database has been compromised...

I use two passwords - one for mailing lists, online shopping and such, and the other for banking.

So, yes, I did use the same password for BFL and for Avalon.

I think so too. Bitsyncom was saying the shopping site for Avalon was being DDOS'ed a couple of days before the launch of Batch #2 sales. Now with the whole WalletBit fiasco, I think some competitor is trying to ruin Avalon.

Surely, shipping addressed on orders for Batch #2 won't be change, can they?

I think this is the other way around - vendor A wants to prevent vendor B from shipping product, by creating a huge workload for their sales department and customer support.

Just my 2 cents...

I received an email from BFL at about 7PM PST this evening and the link was http://localhost/butterflylabs.com/customer/account/

I'm assuming BFL had a misfire on the customer portal they've been working on.

the email is unique to BFL correspondence, so its doubtful that avalon is responsible.

Did, too. A total of 25 singles and a Minirig. 30 grand, man. Made it back, too...

Agreed. Similar experience here.

Nothing to see here, folks; move along.

Well, if all these people getting BFL emails did not sign up for Avalon's mailing list, then it couldn't be Avalon's fault and instead was more likely an error by BFL as it had been suggested earlier in this thread.

I odered from BFL and Avalon with the same email address.
I haven't received weird emails from one of them.
Simply check the email headers and look where the email real coming from.

That or Lastpass. Not sure why anyone would use the same password anywhere else

I'm checking into this. I think there was an import of old orders into our new ordering system last night and for some reason it was set to email people.  I think it only affected a few people.  I'm not saying this is the case for 100%, and I'm still investigating, but it's possible. We have been working on our new shopping cart/ordering system/backend for awhile now and it's almost ready, so it's entirely possible something leaked out in the form of an email when we imported the old data.

Remember back when Intersangro sent everyone an email containing everyone else in the To: field?
