Well, they send you a backup via mail, but you said you dont want to use a service.

As they say they always get our password in encrypted form.is that really true?is there service shuts down will i still have control over it?Please help me friends how can i backup my wallet and store it in say usb drive and store it somewhere safe.is that possible? or any other best bitcoin wallet? and yet don't recommend desktop wallets which can easily be affected by malware

Looks like you already know what you want. So why post at all? The safest way is to use an offline wallet, but thats either a hardware wallet or a desktop wallet. Neither is what you want.

Edit: missed the obvious paper wallet as discussed below.

Generally Hardware wallets are safe , but old linux wallet will also serve for good use ,
use Pc THAT HAVE LEAST INTERNET CONNECTION AND IT WILL BE GOOD FROM POINT OF ONLINE THREATS.

that is correct. the wallet is stored on their servers as encrypted and opens up in your browser

is there service shuts down will i still have control over it?
since you can have the private keys and/or wallet exported, then yes you can have control by importing that into another wallet.

alternative:
use bitcoin core (it is full node meaning you have to download whole blockchain 7GB)
or use Electrum : SPV wallet meaning you only download block headers (30-40 MB)

You can always go for a paper wallet... Secure, and costs almost nothing

ofcourse cold storage , download the official wallet of bitcoin and store , Thats the safest , Other than that if you want online wallet , then i would suggest BLOCKCHAIN wallet , I have been using it for years and no problem at all so far

I want an online wallet something that is independent and provides backup and can't steal the bitcoins even of they shut there service and when they do shut there service i should be able to easily restore my wallet on any other wallet client.Does that kind of wallet exist or not?

I want an online wallet
Blockchain.info

something that is independent and provides backup
you can export your private key from blockchain.info if you want to

can't steal the bitcoins even of they shut there service and when they do shut there service i should be able to easily restore my wallet
I don't think 100% security will ever exist... An online wallet is way less secure than a hardware wallet, a paper wallet or a cold storage wallet. I don't think there are exceptions

100% security still doesn't exist, but if you install Electrum on a fresh Linux machine and you only use the Firefox browser there, for safe sites, and store the seed of Electrum in 2-3 other safe places (USB or external HDD) which you don't put in Windows PC-s, I think this is the most close to 100% security, this is what I am doing actually, saving all of my BTC online, have half of yours actually.

Blockchain.info has option for paper wallet. If i print my wallet. Will my wallet no longer be accessible though blockchain.info?  and if it will, then what's the point of paper wallet?
How can i make such a paper wallet that holds the bitcoin and nothing can be spened untill i actually use the paper. In case of blockchain.info paper wallet my wallet will still be online right?

There is no evidence that they would delete the private key. Even if they do, someone could have kept a record of it, possibly captured by a malware on your computer.

Yes. Bitaddress.org code downloaded and ran on a off line linux computer would be the best option since no one would have access to the private key except you.
For even greater security, review the source code of bitaddress.org. It is important to regenerate a paper wallet everytime you spend it. It would potentially be vulnerable once exposed to the internet.

^^This is a great answer

The only thing i wanted to add: if you use bitaddress and generate a paper wallet offline, you can easily work the other way around, and import the private key from the paper wallet into blockchain if you ever feel the need to do so.
You do have to realise your private key is "compromised" as soon as you use it on any pc that is connected to the internet, so you should do your business, and transfer the rest of the coins back to a fresh paper wallet ASAP.

The process is pretty easy to finetune, since a couple of those offline paper wallet generators can generate a paper wallet for the testnet, so you can easily experment without risking your coins  ;D

My wallet is very safe. First you send your money there and if I have luck after that you will even have interest on that money you putted in my wallet. PM me if u wish to do this, you can try with some smaller amount like just 2 or 3 btc.

Don't blame me for irony after 10001 similar topic.

I've already told you. Bitaddress.org or their source code: https://github.com/pointbiz/bitaddress.org. It is impossible to transmit the private key over internet without internet so use it offline. However, they can still affect the entropy of the private keys so do review the source code and compile it yourself if possible.

I believe bitcoin's own wallet, bitcoin core is the safest wallet.

bitaddress.org's sourcecode is javascript, it runs from your browser.... Just go to the link ranochigo gave you, download the sourcecode (as a zip file), unzip it on a CLEAN OFFLINE computer, open bitaddress.org.html with your browser, follow the wizard, print your paper wallet as pdf on a usb stick, print the pdf on an offline printer that accepts pdf on usbsticks, erase the usb stick, restart the printer, restart (or even reinstall) the pc => safe :)

PS => for the really paranoid:
- BIP38 encryption is a must
- you can run a linux live cd for these steps
- removing the pdf from the usb stick isn't good enough, overwrite the device by random characters several times (TIP: dd if=/dev/urandom of=/dev/sdd1 in case your usb is on /dev/sdd1)

Thank you but in which step i transfer my existing bitcoins to paper wallet that i created?
Can i permanently store in usb stick instead of printing?I think that would be more safe as paper can sometimes be easily lost or damaged.

I think Coinbase is a better choice when it comes to online wallet.

Steps:
1) create the paper wallet, print it (or keep it on your usbstick)
2) scan the QR code of the PUBLIC key with your mobile, mail it to yourself, DO NOT scan your private key
3) transfer your funds to the public key (address) of your paper wallet, double check your public key before sending your coins
4) safety

If you ever need the funds:
1) install a mobile wallet on your phone
2) sweep the private key
3) use your coins, transfer the leftover ammount to a safe wallet (preferably a new, unused, paper wallet)

You CAN store the USB stick instead of printing it, but be warned: even an USB stick has an expiration ;). Personally, i have printed my paper wallets (BIP38 encrypted), laminated them, and gave a copy to my brother to keep in his house.

All you need is a $20 Ledger HW.1 hardware wallet but you seem too hard headed to take advice from members who have more experience than yourself. Hardware wallets are never a waste of money. Bitcoin stealing malware is becoming more common and stopped cold by hardware wallets.

Plenty of safe ways to store your bitcoin's. You are responsible for ensuring your computer/devise is free of malware though.

Try bitcoin.org for a list of reputable ways/places to start.

all wallet is safe( exchanger don't include) if you know how to make it secure, you just need to keep your pc free from virus or any malware, double your security level and don't randomly clicking a suspicious link, most of hacker do have access to your wallet from your email so have a different password is necessary

we cant say that all wallets are safe as i heard that some people lost their bitcoins from blockchain.info wallets because of some security holes

i think the safest wallet is a hardware wallet such as trezor or something like that though i also use paper wallets

The one thing that's still confusing me is you told bitaddress.org generates wallet offline on client side.right? so say if it generates address X and it's unique private key Y
Now some other user on his own PC uses bitaddress.org offline version to generate it's own wallet then how would it know that  X address has already been generated by someone and it will not again generate the same address.I know may be this sounds stupid but please explain me?

There are approximately 2^160 addresses that can ever be created. That's an extremely big number and an EXTREMELY EXTREMELY small number of Bitcoin addresses has been generated from the start till now. The probability of a collision is so small that there probably wouldn't be a collision before the earth cease to exist. However, if Bitaddress.org uses a weak RNG[1], this would be relevant since the address generated won't be random enough. Bitaddress.org records mouse movements. Hence, if the mouse movements is used in adding entropy(should be), it would be secure.

Blockchain now is way bigger than 7GB... my Bitcoin folder for Bitcoin Core is already almost 70GB and growing, so consider that.
It doesn't get any safer than Bitcoin Core tho, because you are validating transactions your own and you know for sure that it's the real deal. The rest have a certain level of risk.

Its not the wallet which is safest. Its your way of storing the private key that makes your wallet safe.Very rare conditions such as blokchian.info was Ddos'd but I don't remember anyone losing their coins.I don't recommend using online wallets with large amounts of coins anyway. If you are technically good enough and ready to compromise data and time ,bitcoin core is THE best wallet around.I'd call it safest. If you want to avoid the trouble, install an SPV like Electrum.Easy to use.Again, its not the wallet but the way you store your private keys. The best way to do this is by storing it offline.

one of the most trusted and secured online wallet is xapo.. xapo have great security service. when you do a transaction you'll get a new bitcoin address and people can't trace you and your wallet with the previous address. but previous address still attach with your account. and xapo have their Insured vault. for keep your money safe for long time.

lol, three pages and lots of other topics about the safest wallet and you (as a Sr. Member) after 14 months on this forum say blockchain is the safest wallet?!!

if by blockchain you meant the web wallet, i gotta tell you, that you are making a big mistake. it is safe but far from the safest wallet.

Xapo is a good choice in terms of authentication but it ask for too many personals questions before you are able to withdraw money from it.
You can open a fiat bank account with this much information.

Thief can steal your bitcoin paper wallet and it can be damaged when there's disaster or because it's too old.
yeah it can be stolen by someone and allowing someone to redeem your bitcoin. especially if you want to send. pretty hard
better use desktop wallet

BIP38 encryption is fairly effective against theft when a strong password is used. At anytime, users should be keeping multiple backups of the wallet at multiple locations. For higher grade paper, oxidation isn't much of a problem.

The problem you stated would also potentially be a problem with hardware wallets.

I am not an expert in android wallets, but so far Mycelium is quoted as the most safe android wallet.
Regarding malwares for android, there are a whole lots, Kapersky and some other big antivirus, internet security companies have developed their internet security for android devices.

I am not satisfy with blochchain.info wallet.. In my first days of bitcoin when I started using first time bitcoin. I used to claim some satoshi from landofbitcoin faucet list. I used blockchain those days. but when I gained some money after 2 or 3 months. my all balance from blockchain were stole . and I lost all my money..

I think blockchain rarely run into obstacles. maybe just a few times maintenance but it was not a problem for the system. blockchain like microsoft I think it is very safe

My Celium wallet is the best so far that I have use of out of all the ones that I have tried so far.
Here is the link for you to review.
https://mycelium.com/mycelium-wallet.html

It receive a reward from blockchain.info 2 years ago, so it has been around for quite a while, so that is secure for you. What I like about it is that it can be installed on android devices.  ;)

I would consider Bitcoin wallets on android to be a hot wallet for usual daily spending. Do consider keeping majority of the coins elsewhere on a desktop or hardware wallet.

There are quite some malware affecting Android. The risk is however, lower if you don't install a whole lot of apps and never from unknown sources. The other possible problem is your phone getting stolen or it getting damaged. You should keep a backup of your seeds.

IMO, Bitcoin Wallet on Android is the most secure. Bitcoin Wallets allows users to use different nodes to connect to. It also uses HD method to generate the wallet.
Mycelium would be the second best. They have several nodes around the world and the users have to connect to them to get information. Privacy would be lost this way. However, they do offer BIP32 HD seeds and various features. This is a huge plus.

Do you know how easy it is to hide a piece of (laminated) paper so it cannot be stolen? Most thieves go to the safe. Try looking for a piece of paper that you may or may not know is even there, in a library of 100 books.
Or in a flower vase, or under a statue...

That's exactly why I like it too. It is mobility so you can take it anywhere with you as well as being secure from hot spot hackers. It is good for using with gambling sites because it is quick & fast to respond on the go. Highly recommend to use this wallet if you want reliable and a secure bitcoin wallet on your phone or computer.

For me I think the best safe btc wallet at xapo. Because xapo have , pin password  and xapo have vault with different password. If u transfer ur btc to the vault in xapo it would be safe..

Xapo is a good choice in terms of authentication but it ask for too many personals questions before you are able to withdraw money from it.
You can open a fiat bank account with this much information.
Yeah I know. Xapo is many question about personal question. That is good your btc wallet is safe. ! Because if someone trying to open ur account will not open. Because there are many question about ur personal that you know the answer. Thanks and godbless

I have changed a lot of Bitcoin wallets in the past year and nowadays I have the most of my stash stored on the BitGo wallet. I have great impressions from it - it has a simplistic interface, it's mobile friendly and you can access your funds using a different wallet should BitGo is inaccessible at the moment. Also you have full control of your private keys and there is 2 factor authentication for added security.

Definitely not the right answer, Blockchain is the least safe of all wallets. There are a lot of "horror stories" regarding it, with people losing their money, so yeah not the right answer at all. It is better to use a desktop wallet on a computer you use only for Bitcoin transactions. By doing this the wallet would be free of malware and any theft of that kind.
Also you should run the latest and the updated versions of the anti-virus software so that you don't loose your hard earned Bitcoins.

How can blockchain.info wallet be safe, when you ARE NOT in charge of private keys of your wallet? Only when you have the private key or wallet seed stored with highest protection in different other places offline only then you increases your chance of security. So far blockchain.info is way too far from this.

Here what happens
I generated a paper wallet with bit38 encyption passphase and it gave me a bitcoin address and private key.I saved that paper wallet as .pdf
I then go to blockchain.info created a new walltet and imported the private key corectly through scanning QR code( i scanned QR through webcam,of course i took snap of qr from pdf with my camera) and then after import it asked me for passphase and i entered it and to my surprice i get message "Import address: random address" Here random address was completely different that i seen on my paper wallet so clearly it was the private key of the random address that was imported and not of the one that is written on my paper wallet.Right?

But remember whenever you're using online things , they can be end offline or just vanish without being expected.
In order to prevent that happen , I'm constantly import private key into offline wallet which provide better from safe side ( currently using multibit )

The safest bitcoin wallet would be a fully-offline non-PC based paper wallet generated with an offline armory in a PC that has not and won't be connected to the internet, Then keeping few copies of it in a bank vault or your personal vault IMO, I don't like hardware wallets that much and still see them as relatively vulnerable compared to offline paper wallet IMO.

I use Mycelium on my phone almost exclusively for my bitcoin and I'm happy with it.  I've used blockchain.info but as you mentioned, if they shut down you're screwed.  I'd stay away from wallets like Xapo for that reason, too.  Good luck to you, sir.

Blockchain wallet is not the best by any stretch of the imagination. In fact they have had networking issues for a while where people couldn't move their funds for extended periods of time and believe me it was really infuriating when you had the chance to buy some discounted thing online but you couldn't send coins because Blockchain was performing maintenance  ;D It was my first ever Bitcoin wallet though I must confess.

Both are not best, coinbase is a wallet service provider, they don't let you have the keys, so if for some reason the site is down, you can't use your funds. Blockchain on the other hand do let you have keys but being a web wallet it is still more vulnerable to attacks.

Yes, that's right, the safest until it hacked. So in other words there is no 100% safe wallet and there can't be actually. Every computer can be hacked so my advice don't search for the safest wallet rather search for a convenient one.

Use coinbase but if you gamble then don't send your coins or receive your coins from your coinbase account.use blockchain as a third party.

Like Coinbase > blockchain > gambling site

and Gambling site > blockchain > coinbase

If you use any other site to keep your bitcoins safe like circle or etc always use blockchain as a third pary.

I think the safest wallets are paper wallets because you are controlling them and no one can get them online or something.
Another fact is that a cold storage is also possible although I find it a bit too difficult for the most of us.

paper wallet is the safest (if you make it the right way on a clean system) but they are not the most continent. because if you want to spend the balance of a paper wallet you will have a lot of problems because you have to find a new wallet, install and sweep then use them which can expose you to some threats.

the best option is an offline wallet that you only sign tx and broadcast them another place.

You need an active wallet too, not 'just' paper. Make a dozen paper wallets, half a bitcoin each. If you need some money, swipe one with your phone and trash the paper.

Blockchain is the best wallet. Blockchain has the best accessibility and faster confirmations in a less time with reduced transaction fee.

Hey there every1 i wanna know how can i safely store 6.xx bitcoins of mine? Please don't recommend hardware wallet as they are waste of money as i ak sure there are some other safe bitcoin wallets.I want a wallet that is independent means even if some service shuts down i still have control of my bitcoins. Is blockchain.info wallet safe? As they say they always get our password in encrypted form.is that really true?is there service shuts down will i still have control over it?Please help me friends how can i backup my wallet and store it in say usb drive and store it somewhere safe.is that possible? or any other best bitcoin wallet? and yet don't recommend desktop wallets which can easily be affected by malware

Well the safest wallet would be the hardware wallet. It may take time to sync initially but your bitcoins will be in a safe hand.

For online wallet, you can try coinbase. It is quite old and trusted till now. Also no fees for the transaction. I am using this online wallet from a long time now and satisfied with the service and security.

Yeah i agree with you, blockchain.info is the best imo. It's my first online bitcoin wallet and it's easy to acess, easy to use and transaction and also user friendly too.

I Agree with the others if you want long term storage where you won't be using your bitcoin for a while then go for a paper wallet, otherwise something like blockchain seems to be the most popular option, I have just discovered Mycellium for IOS and it seems pretty good so far but I am not storing any large amounts of bitcoin on any of the online services.

i guess the safest bitcoin wallet is offline wallets are stored on a computer that never connects to the network so they can't hacked.

You might want to be careful using Mycelium on iOS for the time being, a few users are reporting a bug

As long as you hold the private keys and the wallet is offline, that is safe. But afterall, you are the one who must make it as safe. Even you hold your special keys and even using a hardware wallet, without safety precautions you will be wrecked.

You can create the safest bitcoin wallet on your own without using any computer or internet connection.

Have a look at this video > https://youtu.be/z8b6sLDd158

It is time consuming but most secure.

The safest wallet that I can recommend is a paper wallet, its not hackable well almost not hackable or its your own wrong mistake of course.
Overall there are more wallets that are secure like a cold storage but I think the paper wallet is the easiest way because its very secure and also very easy to understand in the overall experience you are having with it.

One Answer : BlockChain is the best

I agree with you but keep in mind that Electrum is out from quite some time now and 0 horror stories regarding hacking or stealing your coins. Of course if you are in a Windows or Mac system chances are high still that it maybe hacked cause those OS are made in cooperation or in compliance with NSA(National Security Agency), but Linux is so far much more stable and even if someone finds a flaw, it usually its fixed within hours or 1 day max. In this point of view so far Electrum or even Multibit paired with the righ OS are almost as good as unbreakable.

If you lose your TREZOR or if your TREZOR somehow gets destroyed you may have to recover your accounts. So long as your recovery card is intact your bitcoins are safe and sound.

Similar with Ledger, there is a randomly generated 24 word seed you write down on your Recovery Card when you set up your wallet

I too think the most secure wallet would be one being done offline, If I'm not mistaken you are probably talking about Armory generation ability and it's really secure. I think it's a little too difficult for anyone who constantly using these bitcoins and would render it insecure "relatively" if uploaded and used unless you conduct offline transactions and rebroadcast it later on.

Very easy to use and very similar to Electrum kept in an USB stick, but with higher grade of protection, definitely ordering one of this Ledger Nano through ebay during April-May period. A very good tutorial indeed there and is super cheap in price compared to other hardware wallets.

That makes the Recovery Card your weakest link: if it gets stolen, the thief can take your bitcoins, just like if your paper wallet gets stolen.

I have heard that Ledger Wallet Is One Of The Most Secure Bitcoin Wallets You Can Get.
Ledger Wallet multiplies the number of factors to access your bitcoins, including a physical element. And even if your computer is infected, hackers can’t access your bitcoins as the most important part of the code is executed from the wallet directly.

It’s true but…..

“No wallet is completely safe but some are safer than others.”

Hence the popularity of this thread.

How about a paper wallet or Ledger Recovery Card in a fireproof safe at the bottom of the cellar stairs drilled into a concrete floor, that should work…

Every one have one choice and it is your choice but my choice block chain is better than other wallet, It is the very safest and easy to use it, If you don't have experience then also no problems, what do you want to do you can do there easily and there are many function.

People are once again are overthinking simple things. Wallets are just a tool, they are not a problem - problem is human error.
If you machine is protected and working in secure environment then every wallet can be secure.
But if you are looking for a wallet which will save you if you fuck up then this is different story, you always spend money on Trezor or other hardware wallet.

Wrong.Blockchain is the most unsafest wallet out of all the wallets out there. The website has been hacked and Ddosd multiple times. Its good for a newbie user to start with but certainly won't give you the exposure how Bitcoin or private keys work.If you forget the password to your wallet and you haven't imported your private keys, your account gets locked. There is nothing much you can do.Electrum is the next best alternative.

A (small) fireproof safe is not so safe against theft, and the first place to look for valuables. A considerable percentage of bitcoins has been stolen in the past years, so indeed, no method is completely safe.

you can still use an offline wallet and send from it (not paper wallet).
wallets like Electrum and Armory let you have an offline wallet and just sign the transactions there and then transfer than signed transaction to another system to upload to the bitcoin network super safe.

In terms of value, accessibility, features blockchain wallet looks to be the best. It has the fastest confirmations with reduced transaction fee than other bitcoin wallets. In terms of access it has got the browser compatibility which makes accessing much easier with increased security.

As for my suggestion, use coins.ph since they were sure that coin.ph safety use, but you just have to provide a valid i.d able to register you really nicely.
