Title: Beginners Guide
Post by: sez1001 on March 26, 2016, 08:54:31 AM
Hi All,

My first post, so i will introduce myself... I'm Sara... Hi!

There is a lot of information around, I guess the hardest part is knowing where to start without jumping around and picking up bits of info, rather than something more structured!

I have bought an ant miner s3 used off eBay to get started with

Are there any getting started guides around you guys would recommend?

Thanks :)

Quick instructions.

-Get a receiving address from your wallet
-Join a mining pool.
-Create a worker on the pool
-Find your S3 on the network (factory default is 192.168.1.99) and use your web browser to connect to it
-Go to network tab and setup the info.  I recommend setting the miner to another address in case you ad a second.  Reconnect to the new IP.
-Go to system tab and administration.  put in a password.
-Go to status tab and miner configuration.
-Put in your pools stratum address, worker username and worker password.  If the pool does not use worker passwords just put an x.
-Save everything.
-Go to miner status and you should see the pool showing alive and the miner hashing.  If not reboot the miner and check again.

That's it for an S3.

Once you get it setup on your network it's pretty much sign up for a pool, and enter information on S3.  So the one people have most trouble with is networking I would say as entering info.... is pretty easy.

Do you know the IP of your miner?   Do you know the IP range your network uses?

Remember that your router ip has to be 192.168xxx, otherwise it will not work. I wish Antminers worked on 10.0.0.x, because when I switched my router ip, it was a pain in the butt. Took down a few electronics, but was fine after a few days. Nowadays I run a few s3s and 2 s5s on my router, still fine n working.

WOW super advise guys!!! <3

Are there recommend pools? Or just 'what's best for you'?

I hear a lot about slush's pool and bitminter  ???

Thanks again for all your help!

I've been mining on Slush since I started.  Other than the occasional run of bad luck no complaints.

I know a lot of people do not like them but you will find getting going on Antpool or F2pool the easiest. Once you have your system reliably running then you can try some of the others like kano & slush.

One topic that I suggest you look into is ROI.   Or Return On Income, with crypto currency ROI makes or breaks you. It is going to be highly linked to your electricity price.   So you need to know your electricity price and be 100 percent sure of it then start looking into ROI.

But that is one of the biggest topics to look into when thinking about being a miner.   It also can be one of the hardest as speculation is not easy on difficulty currently.

How do you figure out if it will return a profit for you? i have seen tons of online calculators and none of them return the same results..

Biggest thing is electricity price, it will make or break your ROI.  Second is VAT some countries it kills mining to.  But electricity is by far the biggest thing.  If you know your electricity we can give you a little bit of help if it's possible.   But it's all speculation.

You can run a ROI calculator your self - https://bitcoinwisdom.com/bitcoin/calculator hardest part long term on that is difficulty changes.  They have become pretty hard to predict.

Yes but it's gotten much harder at this point.  You really need cheap electricity at this point there is no way around it.  If you don't have cheap electricity then no you will not profit.

And remember profit's from mining never have and never will be a sure bet.  There is always risk with a mining investment.  Right now a big risk is if you buy gear... how long till next gen?  Answer is no one knows.

There's a stochastic part to mining profitability and it is the difficulty increase.

Someone mentioned above he was getting different values from different calculators, this is where it comes from.
It's really hard to guess and it's why investing in mining is pretty risking since you usually can't reach ROI very quickly.

Some calculators are horrible they will show a year at current difficulty, and try for investments using misleading info.  This is part of why I like bitwisdom it's great to be able to change difficulty.   Even still your right it's speculation and hard to get right long term, just is very hard.

And yes at one time it was 3 month ROI.  Now day's on asics it's much much longer, some even have to count on sales to make ROI.  So has gotten harder to ROI.

Yes you need a wallet it will store your bitcoins, and allow them to send to another address.  But from the wallet holding your coins you say to send to another address.  Read up on which ever wallet your using most have little FAQ and make it very easy.

I think you just need to do a little searching on bitcoin.  I would be careful holding to much till you do some research.

True for dhcp, for static IP they do in fact work on 10.x.x.x

Does mining actually can be profitable in 2016 guys?
As stated before, it comes down to how many time you want to invest and how expensive your power is.
I started of by buying a kw/h measuring gadget and i let my SP20E run for a month, after that i calculated if i made any profit at all.
In my case i came out even, because the electricity is around 17 cents per KW. Still i find the exchange from money to electricity to BTC to  money again quite fun and i like to fumble around electronics. So that's a huge plus for me.
And if you are here for profit, having a S7 Antminer would be a huge bonus.
I hope that's an ok answer for you!

most cloud mining sites are terrible dishonest etc. ponzi schemes

here is a cloud site from the biggest builder of gear.  bitmaintech built the s-1 the s-3 the s-5  the s-7

https://www.hashnest.com/

https://www.facebook.com/hashnest/

will it make money for you I have no idea. but they let you sell the hash pretty easy if you want to quit.

I have used them and made a small profit maybe 10 btc in and 10.5 btc out.

Don't go with one that you found that has cheap prices.  Sadly cloud mining if full of scams.  A lot of sites do not even have gear behind them, they fake mining.. give you part of what you paid.. and in the end you lose money.

I really like owning gear personally.  You might look at owning the gear and hosting it somewhere.  There are lot's of options out there for this.  But if you do decide to go cloud mine as Phil suggested deffinaly go with hashnest.

Thanks so much for your kind heart!! I learn a lot!
i have email oxbtc and they told me that i could see their mining facility if i want.
though i don't know if i should trust them, but i can buy 100GHS to try, also it got coupons now so it won't cost me to much for a try. if i don't want it anymore i can sell it.
And thanks for the info of hashnest, i will try that too!

I hope you stuck with a "little" as they are so many cloud mining scams.  Hashnest is the ONLY one you will find people recommending if you really want cloud mining, and there is good reason for that.

I personally like idea of owning miner and hosting it somewhere even better myself.  But anyone reading be careful with "low cost/high roi" cloud mining.  As a lot of those sites will take the money and run, or just simulate mining and make it appear you lost some money due to fees.  Most of these fly by night cloud mining sites I doubt even have equipment.

I guess that someone was trying to get you into his own pseudo-cloudmining scheme. Hashnest is owned by bitmain - the company that produces mining hardware of their own. I'm not advertising anything though  ;D

Most likely this is true.  Look into some of the accounts that push some of the crap scam cloud mining sites.   The only cloud mining site I would even send people to is hashnest.  It just is the only one around with the legitimacy.

That being said I personally would think about buying a miner and looking at hosting as a option.  I just like owning the hardware as it gives me something to sell at the end.  Which can be a nice little bump in ROI.
