Title: Remote Hard Reset for GPU Rigs?
Post by: unitedminers on March 31, 2016, 12:32:02 PM
My GPU rig is much more stable than in 2014 but sometimes only a hard reset works because of GPU freezes or OS (Ubuntu) freezes and I can't access my rig by remote (internet) anymore.

So what kind of hardware do you use to hard reset your rigs by remote?

I think a Raspberry Pi hooked up to the power button input on your motherboard, should be an easy solution.

You need a device like what Dell DRAC and HP ILO do.

The best option to add-on is a Lantronix Spider KVM, but you must add the Power Control Unit if you want to hard power down the hardware otherwise you can only reboot via the KVM.  Sadly the solution will cost you $500, if you didn't need the hard power down you could find a cheap KVM to at least allow a reboot.

Yes, Wake-On-LAN is an option, but if he is unable to remote into the machine with it being hardlocked or loss of internet connectivity then you can do absolutely nothing remotely since the machine is already on.

I like the robotic arm solution best  ;D.

There are wifi plug sockets for exactly this reason.

Or the cheapest and laziest (because it's automated) solution would be to get a plug socket with a timer that for example cut the power every 24 hours for a minute or whatever and if you're rig automatically starts when it gets power (restore on AC/power loss) and starts mining after boot it will always corrects itself eventually without having to manually do it.

You can write a script and have it run periodically (say every minute) to check
if internet (ping)
if the log file is growing (i.e. if not assume miner stopped)
if not then execute reboot.   Then after reboot the script will restart the miner

I have such a script (bash-script for Ubuntu). It really helped me
when one of my rigs "went thru a bad time".

if i'm not mistaken this need a wire anyway, so it's not really what the op is looking for, he was talking to do it without any electrical connection, but only with internet

After hard reset and the Windows reloads, but it might say it was not shutdown properly, so the screen stops at that dialogue screen, you need to use mouse to click the restart. But how do you have access to the mouse remotely?

You can turn that off.

open a command prompt window and enter this

Code:
bcdedit /set bootstatuspolicy ignoreshutdownfailures

Voila

Do I have to run it as administrator?

Can I run it in a bat file after the windows just starts?

Thanks in advance.

I did ordered two of those, will see how it works. Price is tempting and manufacturer is (quite) reliable:

Found this on Amazon for US users, a bit pricey but looks like it would fit the bill nicely.

I use wacth dog timer on mother board for hardware reset. For more cases that will do. Some WDT supports my program Fermtools (freeware for Windows). https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=1442723.0 (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=1442723.0)
