Title: Faucet Owners & Hosting
Post by: bassdude on April 02, 2016, 12:27:08 AM
Hi all I am having trouble with my web hosting at hostgator they tell my my site is putting to much strain on there server and are giving me a warning to sort it out.

My question
1. is it normal to have over 20,000 visits to my faucet in only 2 days or is something funny going on?
2. should I move my faucet to a vps?
3. what hosting to you use with high traffic without issues?

1) What's your daily payout on your faucet? Do you advertise, or have you just put on your thread here and sat back?
2) Yes; if not now, then definitely if/when your faucet becomes larger.
3) Depends, are you looking for a host with a tight budget, or are you fine with reaching deep into your pockets?

There are a couple quality guys around here that I've observed that could help you better than I can.

1. daily payout 350-1000 satoshi my faucet www.btchydrant.com (http://www.btchydrant.com)only been running for less than a week
and yes as a faucet owner always on a tight budget. I can get vps for $3.45 from OVH.com should be enough.

I meant to ask how much you were sending out to users every day, in total. I don't really have much experience with OVH, but that seems pretty affordable to start out with, especially if your faucet is starting out as well and isn't getting hundreds of thousands of payouts daily (yet :) ); but unless they're selling some really great spec VPS for that price, you're going to have to upgrade soon.

Here's a reliable hosting I can recommend Hudsonvalleyhost (http://billing.hudsonvalleyhost.com/aff.php?aff=840). They have very affordable vps server.

Use promo code "smashbtc25" to get 25% recurring payments. I have a high traffic website and never had any issues with them.

I hope this helps u.

From my experience, ~0.004/day is a normal amount to pay out, so for now you are fine, however if it increases, you might want to add security measures to prevent bots.

For a host, I'm not sure if you've already registered with a different host, but I'd recommend SteadyTurtle, (http://steadyturtle.com) they are fast and their support staff is great.

You should add some anti-bots mesures. If lots of your visits don't have a reffer, then are bots.

Not always. Some "actual" users don't have referer information. What if someone bookmarks your faucet?
There's no way to tell.

There's no way to tell.

Also, referrals from faucetbox's official faucet list show up as blank/none for some reason even though the traffic comes from faucetbox.
Faucetbox provides a lot of traffic, so you can't jump to conclusions too quickly.

1) No, it's not normal. 99% of that traffic could be bots.
2) Depends. If your host is expensive and you can't catch up, then yes.
3) I use a dedicated server.

My advice (as experienced owner of faucets with high traffic ): forget about your actual hosting and get a serious (good & cheap) VPS:  https://www.interserver.net/dock/vps-201615.html (https://www.interserver.net/dock/vps-201615.html)

You can test it for 1 month for just 1 cent!  Yes: 1 cent!

for $6 a month you can get SSD VPS with 2G RAM, Anti-DDOS and Plesk license for 10 domains from ovh, and now there is even 30% off promo until 11th april : https://www.ovh.ie/vps/vps-ssd.xml (https://www.ovh.ie/vps/vps-ssd.xml)
i use 2 of them for over a year now, there is nothing better for such price
