Title: [ANN] Wolf's GBT CPU HODL Miner - Bounty Fund
Post by: FreeTrade on April 06, 2016, 04:39:35 AM
After a round of all-night negotiations, The Wolf has agreed to provide the HOdlcoin community with an open-source, GBT CPU miner if a 1.25 BTC bounty can be raised.

GBT, Get Block Template, will support better decentralization for HOdlcoin as it allows clients to create the blocks to mine, making it more difficult for pools to block or control transactions.

The miner will be capable of solo operation and will also run with compatible pools.

I'm starting a fund here -

https://blockchain.info/address/1WoLFzJJbzh5SrQSG2T3YHujCD2G2sN8J

I'm kicking it off with a .25 BTC contribution and ask for your support for this development.

FT

i would have donated if it was at the beginning, now this coin is wortless to mine, yes maybe there is some profit but you need to remember that when you run your cpu at full speed you can not run your gpu, so you're actually losing money

Maybe someone needs to release a GPU miner instead.

I hope this works out. I just do not have the Bitcoin to donate.  :-\

HOdl is still at the beginning. I mine about a block a day on my own with an i7 while mining directly from the wallet. This is not like Memorycoin that only rewards 2.9 MMC per block today. I mine that everyday though and still manage to make a decent amount that can easily be traded on Poloniex.

I doubt we will be seeing a GPU miner any time soon. GPUs do not receive the same bonus for AES instructions as CPUs do with AES-NI. That is not to say it would not be faster, but that it will not see a magnitude of increase on par with Bitcoin or Litecoin and it will require more power.

I'll have fun quoting you if I have time to butcher it with a real implementation :D

Surprise us W0lf :D Would love to see a GPU miner but cant support the bounty

Well, my statement is based on MemoryCoin and the folks that wrote a GPU miner for that. I would personally like to see it done and maybe, with your skills, you can pull it off. :)

Butchered custom algos - even if based on a proven and well-scrutinized primitive - OFTEN fail to do what they intended. For an excellent example of fucking up your goal with a custom cryptosystem because you don't know what you're doing while still using secure primitives, see WEP.

I am aware of the issues FreeTrade had with MemoryCoin. How do you feel about his work on HOdlcoin in comparison?

Is that possible to make a GPU miner?

It should be possible. We just need someone like Wolf0 to make one. :)

That WAS my opinion on the current PoW of HOdlcoin.

I understand what you are saying. What would you have suggested in place of the current algorithm?

... What would you have suggested in place of the current algorithm? ...

A proper KDF would work... many are even tunable to different needs.

I never thought of using KDF in this manner. I am assuming that you would be solving for the Derived Key. How would the Key in the KDF function be determined? Would the nonce be represented by the salt value?  What kind of function would you suggest to use in operating on the Key?

You never heard of scrypt?

A forum isn't really the best place for this, but stop overthinking it. Stuff your whole block header, nonce included, in the "key" input that is transformed.

@Wolf0  You are right. I was over thinking it.

You never heard of scrypt?

@tromp  Honestly, I never actually looked at the scrypt algorithm. Yes, I have had my head in the sand for some time now.  :-\

No movement on this for a month. Feels like we're not going to make it any time soon and I think Wolf is ambivalent about this project.

Wolf, do you mind if I cancel this and put the funds in HODL promotion instead?

He may be a bit busy, I think we should wait a few weeks for him at least...

Returning the money to those that give it seems fairer to me... You have the addresses.

I don't, but you might want to return it to the donators, or at least make sure they're okay with it.

Thanks Wolf!

Anybody who wants their donation refunded, please let me know the transaction id and I'll refund it to the sending address.
