Title: Can I supply a GPU with a Server HP PSU?
Post by: Sirvaude on April 10, 2016, 07:18:37 AM
Hi there, I have a doubt.

Can I give 12v to a GPU (turn it on) before I turn on the mainboard? would that be a problem?

I have a Gigabyte 7970, and a MSI Z77A-GD55, I also have a generic "500 Watt" PSU to supply the mainboard, and a HP DPS-1200FB PSU; I'm wondering if I can use it to supply only the GPU.

Assuming that I can supply the GPU with that HP PSU; Due that those PSUs works separately, do I need to turn them on at the same time? or can I turn on the HP before the generic one?

AFAIK, I can use a relay of 5V or 12V connected to the generic psus 5v/12v rail... so, it will turn on the PSU at the moment I turn on the mainboard... but before I do anything and burn something I need to know if I'm right or how should I do it.

Thanks in advance.

turn on the server PSU about 0.5 seconds before your computer and you will be fine.

This should work. If you can line the PS_on pin to the server PSU, that should also work. There are products like

i have a dell 2950 server and i also using an external power supply from another pc.. my dell server have 2 built in but not enough plugs..  you first turn on external and the server next..  my server have a integrated video so if i turned on the server first the integrated video kicks on first

but on your case yes turn on the external power supply first
