Title: What happens after BitCoin?
Post by: cvicisso on June 10, 2011, 04:11:40 AM
I hope BitCoins last forever, but...

What if they don't?  There's talk of government intervention, the end of the world, etc.

My question is: if it becomes impractical, impossible, or illegal for us to mine BitCoins, is there another place we can use this gear for a profit?  Or is it all for naught?  Thanks.

Have a badass Gaming rig! Or you can join F@H! Sell it!

Gaming would be nice - but I barely have time to sleep!   ;D  I'm an 'old' geezer (42!), with kids and bills and all kinds of other crap.  Plus, I'm in the Navy - and just trying to keep my head above water (intentional pun).  I bought this rig for some supplemental income, and am just wondering about 'future-proofing' it as best I can... although you're right: my son would LOVE to get his hands on it!

What about 'protein folding' or other things out there?  Does anyone other than BitCoin pay for sick GPU power?

Funny, just asked the same question yesterday in the local boards.

Basically, you then have an expensive room heater which makes a sound like the demon of global warming breathing down your neck.

It can be used for OpenCL based rendering ( => Big Bug Bunny) or perhaps some other BOINC project, though none of them will compensate you for the energy spent.

It can be used to hide your pot growing enterprise ("Oh, the heat and the electricity bill? That's from my old mining-rig, I use it to test ATI-drivers on Linux...")

There are lots of those 'cloud' companies that sell computing power wholesale, no reason why they couldn't find some way to farm it out. One problem is that a lot of that work probably involves data that is confidential for some reason. Another scenario is that an individual wants to pay you to transcode a bunch of HD movies or something similar.

Maybe the big mining pools could develop some ideas for actual distributed computing using their miners, deepbit alone would be the fastest supercomputer in the world

After Bitcoin?

I guess we all get re-acquainted with things like fresh air, razors, and soap  ;D

Whew.  In that case, I hope btc lasts a LONG time... as long as it doesn't facilitate the end of civilization, of course!   ;)
