Title: Litecoin faucet
Post by: kingmidas on February 12, 2013, 08:05:04 PM
Hello,

As I posted in the newbie section (I just became a Jr. Member), I created a litecoin faucet.

Original topic: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=142328.0

URL: http://coinofmidas.com/litecoin

Enjoy :-)

You might also like to post about this over on Litecointalk (http://forum.litecoin.net/), if you haven't done so already.

I already posted there too  :D

Here it is http://forum.litecoin.net//index.php/topic,1160.0.html

Also another payment has been processed and here is the link: http://explorer.litecoin.net/t/6ZUH91rRDD

I'm curious, how are calculated the fees?

Size of yesterday's payment: 1088 bytes / Fee: 0.2
Size of today's payment: 1111 bytes / Fee: 0

I forgot to post the last transaction  ;D

Here it is: http://explorer.litecoin.net/t/85wDABuTX4

Good news: I added and tested the referral system. It works fine  ;)

Don't try to refer yourself or you might get banned  ::)

You will receive your earnings from referrals only if you asked for LTC at least once in a day  :)
The ref URL looks like http://coinofmidas.com/litecoin/?ref=YOUR_ADDRESS

You'll need to use the same address for referrals as the address you are using on the faucet.

Enjoy :-)

can I ask if you made this yourself or altered code on a bitcoin faucet that was in the github?? I ask as I am keen to setup a Terracoin facet at some point :)

I made it from scratch.

I don't like to use lots of APIs and things like that. I am bad at design, the background image and the menu are not mine, but all the code is written by me.

I also opened the terracoin faucet... I just finished it few minutes ago ;D

I used the same code as in the litecoin faucet, the link is http://coinofmidas.com/terracoin ;)
The first TRC payment will be made manually to be sure everything works fine.

@FuzzyBear If you'll need some help you can PM me :P

@crazy_rabbit wow :o thank you, I'll add you to the donations page  ;D

The donation address is the faucet's address. I don't keep the coins, I just distribute them :D

Later edit:

0.7 LTC fees?  ???

The last two payments had no fees, how can I avoid high fees? :)

Yes, we will likely be reducing fees for the next release. But for now, don't send transactions with any output less than 0.01 litecoins. Those are considered spam since that's $0.0007. Each transaction less than 0.01 ltc will force you to pay an addition 0.1 ltc in fees.

Also, don't send such huge transactions. Large transactions (in bytes) will require fees.

I see.. this is why the fee was zero on the last payments, because the smallest transaction was bigger than 0.01 LTC.
Thanks  ;)

After last payment http://explorer.litecoin.net/t/AazECUoZbp I think I'll process only the payments bigger than 0.01 LTC because of the fees.

The payments under 0.01 LTC will be on hold until the total value of unpaid LTC is over that value.
I don't like this, but the last payments had a fee of 1.9 LTC :-\

I added 10 LTC to the faucet yesterday and the payouts raised from 0.0065 to 0.025 LTC.

Hello,

It looks like yesterday I had some issues with the server and the litecoind server was offline from around 11:00 to 17:00 (or 11AM to 5PM) and I wasn't home to fix them.  :-\

The payments have been delayed because of a small bug from the auto-payment script ( I forgot a ;  ;D ) but now everything is working fine.

This is a really nice faucet and as someone new to both BTC and LTC I really appreciate it.  Thank you.

I do have one question though.  When I go to check my address [LMKuihW2dvWCnLzzaVgUYmAXMWahMQh6jy] it shows that I was paid ~.008 of a LTC but no LTC have actually showed up in my wallet despite being fully up to date with the blockchain.  Is this because the amount is so low?

I'm not complaining, you are giving away free LTC after all, just curious.  Thanks again!

Hi,

Because of the high fees for transacting less than 0.01 LTC (0.1 ~ 0.2 LTC per transaction) I decided to delay the payment to the addresses which don't pass that value.
Yesterday I had some problems with the server and I used an older version of the auto-payment script and I think because of this the payments below 0.01 were updated to 'processed' in database but they were not sent.

I'm not home right now and today is a busy day for me, but I think I'll manage to fix it until the next payment.

It's better to post your concerns, because I may not be aware of a bug and because the traffic increased lately, it's pretty hard to compare data from database with the data from litecoin server.

Later edit: definitely there is a problem with the payment script because I checked the logs and something is not right. Probably tonight everyone will get a bonus :D

Later Later edit:
I found the problem: I verify addresses before inserting them into database, but the verify function ignores empty spaces and it returns true if the address is valid, even there is an empty space in the address.
Because someone put an empty space in his address, the last character was trimmed and the address was stored with 33 characters instead of 34.
Because of the invalid address, the payments couldn't be send.

Now I know where is the problem and it will be solved shortly.

If you find more bugs, if you don't know something or if you are just curious, contact me :-)

I added more coins to the faucet and set an upper limit to 0.01 LTC per request.

This helped me to reduce the fees, as you can see here:

Hello again  :)

The last two days I was cannot check anything related to the faucets, because I wasn't in town.

The payments couldn't be sent because of someone who entered empty spaces in his address.
I solved that issue this morning and I've sent the payment for all pending requests :)

Here is the transaction for the last ~60 hours: http://explorer.litecoin.net/t/ThPWpV9QF

Cheers!

Hello!

Another payment was made and everything runs smooth :)
I solved any known issues and I am waiting for suggestions.

I still don't know an effective way to attract new visitors to the faucets  ???

Anyway... here is the latest transaction: http://explorer.litecoin.net/t/6YyeWi4HvZ

I added more coins and the payments should increase to 0.01 LTC / request.

The next payment is in ~2h so hurry up if you want some coins fast or else you`ll need to wait 24 more hours  ;D

Enjoy ;)

LE: I added another layer of verification to the faucet, canceled ~20 pending fraudulent requests and banned around 20 addresses & IPs.

Missing exactly 0.01 LTC from the faucet, but it says paid. Does it have to be ABOVE 0.01 LTC?

Uhm... yes... I edited the script and now it will send the payments for a value greater or equal to 0.01 :-)

Lately I got almost no free time to check how the faucets are doing, and right now I see there are some problems. My hosting company is kinda bad and there are some serious issues with their servers. I talked to them on the phone but I cannot improve anything. The server keeps returning 500 Internal Server Error randomly throughout the day. Their excuse was "Maybe you got too much traffic on your page!".

This is the reason why I will increase the cooldown between requests.

Also the payments are delayed, because the server was giving "free errors" at the time when the payment script is running.

Users who got active referrals still can gen decent payouts everyday :)

I currently changed the timer from once per hour to once per day... if I see there are no more problems, I will reduce the cooldown again :-)

Hi Kingmidas,

Simply put...I am loving your site and I visit several times a day.  The new changes are disappointing but do what you gotta do to keep the site up and running.  Hopefully you can reduce the cooldown soon in the future.

Last hour I looked in the logs... Sadly there are some users who keep changing their IP and LTC address to get more coins. I created a linking system which links all IPs and addresses used by someone. But few days after this I saw new IP and address pairs, so the method is good, but not the best.

I am curious if there is any way to find if two addresses belong to the same wallet. If someone knows, please PM me. This will help the faucet a lot.

Not really. If you can do that then it means the privacy model of bitcoin is breached.

How much are you giving out per request?

Was 0.01 per request, every hour.
But if the faucet is running low, the amount will decrease over the time. People of course where draining it, in a few hours I saw th amount of 0.008 go to 0.006.

Hello :-)

Well, I have some issues with the hosting company (this is why so many of you get into 500 Internal Server Error).
After the latest changes, the frequency of those errors has decreased and there were no more problems with the payments.

The ad revenue decreased lately and the faucet strives to stay afloat.
Before I changed the cooldown, the faucet was giving ~3 LTC per day, but with the ad revenue I usually bought ~2 LTC back.
After that change, the faucet is giving ~1 LTC per day, but with the lately increase of litecoin's price and with the decreased ad revenue, I can't buy that 1 LTC back :-\

I added a total of 50 LTC from my wallet, and used all the bitcoins I received from advertisements to buy more litecoins. The donations are going directly to the faucet's balance and not in my wallet :-)
Currently, there are ~15 LTC in the faucet and if nothing will change, it will be "alive" for about 3-4 weeks.

w00t!

It looks like someone tried to hack my website..
I logged the IP 46.246.31.131 ... I was curios if the person is using bitcoins, so I checked the blockchain and... found this https://blockchain.info/ip-address/46.246.31.131  >:(

I will close the faucets for the next hours to do some checks  :)
