Title: Overheating issue?
Post by: Chick on June 10, 2011, 07:09:09 AM
One of you guys were right. Cooling 4 5830s is a bitch. I don't have a case for them, I was thinking about getting some wood and screwing in the screws on the metal extending from the end of the cards.

Do you guys have any suggestions? Right now, reaching 300mhash / sec is impossible with the current heats.

I have 3 fans running trying to cool these xfx cards down.

Have you looked into PCIe extenders to space the cards more?

Having an open case does not always help to decrease temperature.

The best way to decrease temperature is to move more air over the cards, sometimes creating a "wind tunnel" -like effect with a case is actually better.

For a quick fix, lower the surrounding temperature as much as possible, run the AC or something, if this isn't possible, create a tunnel that forces air to move in one direction over the cards so that more heat is wicked away into the air rather than radiating out at whatever speed the heat-sink fans can push.

I would suggest you buying extender cables and setting up some kind of rack with space between each card. If you search for Pics of Mining rigs you can find lots of examples. For instance I zip tied 4 cards to a Small Wire Mesh Table and hung them.

BTW you should probably post something like this in Technical Support Forum next time.
