Title: zero balance on a old wallet
Post by: Grouver (BtcBalance) on February 14, 2013, 10:38:29 PM
Hello,

It's about this address:
16wJL3gZkrp2QpkszXFaa53twxodpT2kTP

It says it contains 1 BTC at blockchain.info.
Which is right since I put 1 BTC on it before I saved the wallet.dat file on a USB stick and gave it as a gift to someone.

Now the guy tried loading it up... but it didnt show the correct balance of 1BTC, so he called me.

I have the same address in my QT client under: "Recceive coins".
And if I look this adress up at blockchain.info it shows 1BTC for this address.
But according to QT it has 0 btc on it.
Even if I try to dump the private key it says :
"Private key for address 16wJL3gZkrp2QpkszXFaa53twxodpT2kTP is not known (code -4)"

Do I need to rescan or whats going on?

Thanks.

No. Since it will take a long time I wanted to ask first if maybe something else was going on.

I suspect that the first thing anyone is going to suggest is running the client with the -rescan option.  Go ahead and try it while you wait for someone else to come up with a better idea.  If you had run it when you posted, it would have been done before you bumped.

True. How do I add the rescan option to my bitcoin client?
Do I start the client via the CMD command line with -rescan behind it?
I am not sure about this. Thanks.

While I have never had a need to use the rescan option yet myself, every time i see it described it is described exactly the way you just did. Therefore, I would assume that the answer to your question is, yes.

Fixed. The rescan option did it.
Should have tried it out before posting.
It didn't even took a long time after all.

Thanks.

Glad to hear it worked out.  I thought I read somewhere that the -rescan wasn't supposed to be needed any longer with 0.7.2 (or maybe even 0.7.1).  I'll have to remember that isn't true.
