Hi all,

We've set up this thread on Bitcointalk to co-ordinate information on #BitcoinSurvey 2016, an international survey on bitcoin usage being conducted by BitcoinsInIreland.com . Our central location for this will be http://bitcoinsinireland.com/international-bitcoinsurvey-2016-launches-in-11-languages/ . Check out #BitcoinDachshund on Twitter at https://twitter.com/search?f=tweets&vertical=default&q=%23bitcoindachshund&src=typd as he's helping us out.

The survey is openly conducted, as we did in the past with #BitcoinSurvey 2015 (see https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=987941.0;all & https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=1017295.0 ), and non-bitcoin research on the Irish Games Industry (search Games Industry in Ireland 2012, #IrishGameDev Map, #IrishGameDev Timeline).

Much of the bitcoin related research to date is either locked behind a paywall, and therefore unavailable to the broader public, or focused on North America. As we're Irish, we're taking an international approach, and conducting the survey in eleven languages, Arabic, English, Finnish, French, German, Italian, Polish, Romanian, Russian, Spanish & Turkish. Thanks to the community, it's also in Albanian and Chinese.

The survey looks at a broad range of bitcoin usage, and as it covers quite a range of topics across the 35 questions, we have put up some bitcoin as rewards for participants across the surveys. We are putting up 1.25 bitcoin in prizes, which will be distributed as follows.

start of May - 5 participants will be drawn from survey respondents up to that date, and each of them will be sent 0.05 bitcoin each. - Reward proof is at https://blockchain.info/tx/09c4e2921c6f11fe08f8d574a0b20c2750c21aab5eca4060d855243157e98d1f

start of June - 5 participants will be drawn from survey respondents up to that date, and each of them will be sent 0.05 bitcoin each. - Rewards proof is at https://blockchain.info/tx/096807e1e4ef73c60e89ad9393d553a49a54cf60292708de29506e24aa8693aa

start of July - 5 participants will be drawn from survey respondents up to that date, and each of them will be sent 0.05 bitcoin each.

An additional name will then be drawn in July at the same time, and this will be given 0.5 bitcoin, giving a total of 1.25 in rewards distributed. Proof of payment will also be posted. There's some simple rules, bot/macro filled in surveys will have all of them excluded, as will duplicate entries. When doing the draw, we will record the process of selecting those who got something for full transparency, and post the videos to YouTube.

So it would be great if we could get people to participate and share the survey, and we're open to any questions!

Cheers

The Bitcoinsinireland.com Team

Same question. Can't see a link to the actual survey, just the introduction + FAQs.

I'm guessing it's not yet opened and this is just an announcement.

I'll be happy to take part in it.

When will this survey be online? Because, as others users said alredy - there is no link to actual Survey, just introduction post. Or am I missing it?
Secondly - I checked transation of introduction post in some languages and it is quite funny that you translated words like 'Blockchain' - please don't do that - it can be more confusing this way.

Thanks for those, I hadn't set the surveys to live! All the preparation... ;p

@Alex514, I've fixed this now so it should be working
@Jushie, if you go to the corresponding language's intro page, the link should send to the start of the survey now
@pawel7777 & @Hazir, they're open now to be done!

Also, I've reworked the location of the sharing buttons, so it'll be easier to be seen.

@knightdk, thanks for that, it's fixed now. been a long day getting all these done

============================================

@hopenolate one of my friends from the games industry did the localisation, was there particular terminology that you found problematic?

here are some words whose translation sounds really weird:

 - miners : wouldn't translate at all but it's not that weird until you translate "cloud miners"

 - exchange : wouldn't translate

 - faucet: wouldn't translate

there are also a bunch of elementary spelling mistakes  but they don't keep us from understanding questions properly.

Just out of curiosity: in question #4 you ask "male or female"; possible answers are 1) maschio (uomo) 2) female (donna) 3) non ancora (not yet) : concerned about that not yet  :D

Try to visit philippine section were you can see people rotating threads daily.

Post by: jammers on April 20, 2016, 01:34:15 PM
Hi all,

We're catching up with things now, and I'm having a chat with the guys helping me on the survey, and we'll respond to those of you who offered localisation help.

We're up to 42 responses so far, thanks everyone! We're also up to 15 countries on the English survey!
http://i67.tinypic.com/29613qp.png
Also, we'd like to introduce #BitcoinDachshund on Twitter https://twitter.com/search?f=tweets&vertical=default&q=%23bitcoindachshund&src=typd who's helping us with the survey ;p

@ETFbitcoin if you want to PM me some suggestions, I'm happy to add them in for next year's survey, we can't add to the survey questions that are running now unfortunately, but the threads about ideas and we're happy to have them!

@hopenotlate I've passed your feedback onto the guys here, i think we can edit the questions if it's a simple grammer area. And the gender question was for male/female/not telling!

on some questions it would be great to have more than one option to choose.

for example what kind of wallets do i use: i use more than one different method...
or how i use an exchange. There is missing the option to buy altcoins as well...

What is the goal of this survey? It is the first time I see a survey being done in several different languages, so that is something refreshing. You can now break up this survey results according to regions, which is quite clever. The reward is also a good idea, and will most probably increase the participants.

Keep us posted with the outcome of this survey, I would like to know how many people still make use of faucets these days. ^smile^

Hi all,

Thanks for everyone's responses so far, we've just passed 80 responses from 28 countries!!!

http://i67.tinypic.com/2cmx37o.png

So in answer to some of your comments.

Re: additional localisations, I'm just discussing what's involved with the team here about adding additional languages. We know that the localisation takes some time, so we're considering putting up a helper fund of 0.25 bitcoin, to be divided by all of the people who can contribute a localisation. We have google docs with the English, so that we can get this information back quickly. I'll contact people who PM'ed me in a few. I know this means that the more people who contribute, the less each will get, but if that doesn't turn people off we'd be glad to get it into extra languages as suggested in the thread.

@schnib on the altcoin question, that's true, we can add that into next years survey, once it's started we couldn't. For the wallets, it should be multiple choice, so what language were you doing and we can check the settings?

@Kakmakr thanks for the feedback. It's for exactly those reasons that we want to have the different languages, so we can see separately if people are different or the same in their use of bitcoin, and then we can combine the figures for a mega report.

@Wendigo for questions that are mandatory, this relates to the answer. The extra information is always optional. ie in the question, have you lost coins, and if so what were the circumstances, you can answer, but not fill in what happend. I hope this clarifies!

@NeuroticFish thanks a million for flagging this, we found out that the polldaddy URL had a ț in it, so we've updated the links on our side. If you try again, it should work now!

@znickelbackz can you let me know if you are coming in from Turkey (pm me if you want)? We've had some reports of issues specifically from there and are investigating this to try and see what the problem is

@ahmedjamal1998 thanks for the feedback, I'll pass it on to the guy who did the Arabic localisation for us :)

Hi all,

Thanks for everyone's participation so far, we're now up to 158 responses across all languages so far, and a new response is coming in every few minutes which is great to see.

We also investigated some of the connection issues with our web host, so hopefully anyone who was running into connection problems shouldn't have them. If you do, please let us know what page / survey you're having the problem with.

Thanks!

Hi all,

So it's Sunday, with the survey only running for about 5 days, and we're nearly at 200 responses already! I'm keeping a running total in the OP.

Also, there's been a load of new countries in, so our map of the world is filling in nicely!

So thanks to everyone who's participated so far.

@Amph - Sure, we can factor this into next years survey, it's a good point.

How can we certain that any of the participants will get paid their reward of bitcoin? So as I understand it not everybody who takes part in it will get paid anything. :-\

Title: Re: #BitcoinSurvey 2016 seeking participants - 1.25 bitcoin in rewards
Post by: jammers on April 25, 2016, 02:12:52 PM
@iram66680 that's a very good question :)

Ok, so on this, last year as we went we published proof of payments on the forums here, and these are at http://bitcoinsinireland.com/bitcoinsurvey-report-2015/ via https://www.blocktrail.com/BTC/address/1LUD7xavJo1um3toduKCpKu1tcKM4RmgPD/transactions . In the last transaction, one of those drawn had put in a bitcoin address missing a digit, so we emailed them, and re-arranged this.

This year, we'll be recording the draw and posting it to youtube for the winners, and then posting the results. I just bought some bitcoin so I've the 0.251 (extra for fees) which I'm going to transfer later today to a dedicated address, and will sign a message from it to prove it's there. It's a bank holiday weekend in Ireland for the 1st of May, so once we get back after this, we'll send it out. But there's about 220 responses now,  so with 0.05 x 5, that's a 1 in 44 chance of being drawn, less when we deduct those who tried to game the system by putting in duplicate ones ;p

Hi all,

The OP has been updated with a note that we transferred April's rewards, as well as a message signed showing we own the address at the bottom of https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=1443205.msg14598046#msg14598046

Hi all,

I'm going to be AFK for a couple of days, but by colleague Nic (irishnic) will be monitoring the thread to answer any questions you have, as well as giving some updates in terms of the survey.

Thanks

Jamie

Survey has been going really well this week - we're already at more responses then we had for all of last year!

We're also getting more responses from more countries!

A big thank you to everyone who's completed the survey and spread the word!

We should be able to provide even more information about how everyone's using bitcoin when the survey finishes :)

@n691309 the survey has 35 questions, but not every question is mandatory. What language are you thinking that isnt in? We have localisation files to make it easier wen we were doing the translations
I think you need to add India language and Indonesian. there are a lot of Indian and Indonesian here. they may be the participants of this.

anyway don't use machine to translate. many people complain about that.

good luck for your survey

Hi all,

Just recovering from a wedding, but there's 314 responses to #bitcoinsurvey2016 so far which is great. We're going to cut the results, remove out the duplicates, and then we'll have list, from which we'll record the process of selecting the winners, and we'll post proof of the transaction when we do this.

Anyone who doesn't get drawn will continue to be eligible for later amounts, as well as the top amount in July.

Trezor works a bit different than Armory, so the funds for this are now at https://www.blocktrail.com/BTC/address/1FRCyKmDNRgAW6qLZsJmp56oeXVRoCtXrA (https://www.blocktrail.com/BTC/address/1FRCyKmDNRgAW6qLZsJmp56oeXVRoCtXrA)

Hi all,

I've exported all the results up to now, so we've a bit of work to do before we can do up the draw.

Once that's done, we can set up #BitcoinDachshund to hit go on our Trezor.

While your site still doesn't load (at least for me), I guess that I will still not "take part today".

@NeuroticFish which language survey were you running into the problem with? We've had that report from a couple of people, it seems that certain configs of ubuntu, or VPN's are triggering our web host's firewall

At first when I visited the link provided by OP, I wasn't able to understand how to do the survey until I started reading from the top (I usually don't read from the top, rather from the middle, down, then the top). That was a 'normal' length survey. Not too short, yet not too long and the questions were easy to understand. I hope the success for this survey!

Hi all,

A bit of fun for a Friday evening, I've updated the map of participants which is below, thanks everyone!

http://i66.tinypic.com/2z9jwpi.jpg

@davinchi yeah, the OP is being updated with the running total and details on the survey rewards distribution

@john2231 we did add albanian and chinese because people helped out, and we have a modest reward for volunteers. I know there was some forum posts talking about Filipino, but if you want to PM me, I can get you in touch with my colleague who has the localisation files.

@n691309 , what's the link you're clicking that's giving you that error? As I said in a previous post, our web host's firewall is filtering some people (sorry guys, pm me what language you want, and I'll send you the direct link to polldaddy), but that particular error is a new one

This time I tried Romanian. On Chrome for Windoze. No VPN, no odd settings.
A few weeks ago I tried EN and RO, same result.

Hi all,

There's the last few days in May to go before we do our next draw for the next 5x 0.05 bitcoin, which will be happening mid-next week. Take part today to have a shot at it! If you're running into technical issues with the link in the OP, send me a PM!

Thanks

Jamie

Title: Fill in #BitcoinSurvey before end of May for a chance at the next 5 rewards
Post by: jammers on May 30, 2016, 10:11:27 PM
What a price spike there's been in the last few days! We've one more day to go before we cut the winners for #BitcoinSurvey 2016's May draw.

There's 444 responses, less 5 who won last month, so that's a 1 in ~88 chance of being picked as it stands right now! We'll be doing our next draw before the weekend, so have your say now, to be in with a chance of winning 0.05 bitcoin which is worth ~$27 or ~€24

The links are in the OP at https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=1443205.msg14598046#msg14598046

hmmm, this is interesting when thinking about the casual survey i was doing

While conducting a casual survey (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=1628738.msg16431496#msg16431496) into how many people use Bitcoin, the question of how many nodes do we need arose.

https://i.imgur.com/pGyYpeR.png

Here is how many reachable nodes are on the network supporting these users, along with the original version release dates:

https://i.imgur.com/CPiKvf0.png

The key question is is a little complicated: how many full nodes do we need for the current users, how many do we need for double the current users; how many do we need for 100m users; and how many do we need for double that again?

Rather than ask those questions first, I thought it would be interesting to get a common base for how many nodes do we need for the current user base of between 2m to 10m going into a growth period which might see numbers go up to 30m?

Lets ignore pruning; segwit, etc. Those are fantastic technological advances, that I would call tricks of the trade to make everyday users lives easier. The backbone of the network is always going to be full nodes.
