Title: Payments received, but not from my address..
Post by: Hello Kitty Bitcoins on February 18, 2013, 09:10:01 AM
I'm using Bitcoin-QT and I have one address: 15mpN3h8Q5Q4RakYbxW5w9q8uRFkTw49QY
I sent a friend some bitcoins and the address he got them from was: 1BVJDrzcpEK38bnuQKjiFo9opaxJpSe2oi
Is this something that happens?

I also sent some to satoshi dice, and it said I got them back at: 1PSqVy953YGZVYxa8kmqwA587N8gX85Xw7

What is going on here?

Your Bitcoin-QT has several addresses. You only get the once you created displayed, though.

You only can send the whole Transactions you revived to an address.

When you have revived 1 BTC to one of your addresses you have to send 1 BTC. Think of it as if you got a 1 Dollar Bill, you have to spend it completely and receive change back.

And that's exactly what happens. When you have this 1 BTC and now send 0.5 BTC you Bitcoin-QT sends one BTC. 0.5 BTC to the address you send 0.5 BTC and 0.5 BTC back to you as change.

To support the anonymity, you Bitcoind creates a new address to send the change to it.

Now if you send some BTC they might get send from that change address.

And that's what happened to you.

Or use a different bitcoin client.

Bitcoin-Qt does not allow you to choose where the change goes in your transactions. It just creates a new address and hides it in your wallet.dat.  I think there are other bitcoin clients that will allow you to choose a change address.  I can't remember which ones.  Maybe Electrum? or https://blockchain.info/wallet ?
