Why do people think any problem can be solved if you throw enough money at it?

This is the correct way to "help"! Don't give people things, trade with them as equals.

Either that or share knowledge with them.

I think the funniest thing is nobody (myself included until just now) actually clicked the link. It's about spreading information on bitcoins in Africa not donating. >_<

One way you can help is to organize the PR effort by helping locate all Kenyan and African forums, image boards, message boards, and twitter clones. Post in this thread (http://www.bitcoins.co.ke/forum/showthread.php?tid=3) please.

I don't see this as neo-colonialist by the way. This is about empowering people who have weak governments to provide for their own future with the same great tools that we have found.

Any ideas about how to get this started?

I don't think this will work well as a portal since M-Pesa has some daily limits...like $700 a day equivalent for an account. https://www.bitcoinary.com/ could work for this though.

First thing is, do you know anyone with an M-Pesa account?

perhaps one way round that would be to do a p2p style m-pesa exchange - you'd need to find a few good BTC sellers with m-pesa accounts to get it started though..

Great! First of all, if they have any concerns, PM me with their email and I'll be happy to address them.

The basic strategy is to  have them setup a listing on LocalBitcoins.com listing Bitcoin to M-Pesa and Ksh available. They can set a quite low limit as to the amount of money they can spare for this and set whatever price they want since they're the first. The main competitor in Internet transfers is is PayPal, getting Ksh or M-Pesa from which will likely cost 30-50%.

Once they have a listing, I'll be happy to put them up on the front page of bitcoins.co.ke and it'll stay there until there are too many to list.

Personally, I would like to try making a purchase from Pewahewa.com (an online music store) and will pay bitcoins to the sender of the M-Pesa for a first transaction.
