Title: Bitcoin Community Survey
Post by: simulacrum on February 19, 2013, 12:04:42 PM
Hi all,

I made a survey/census for Bitcoin users (noobs and veterans alike), please do leave your mark.  I'm curious to know more about the demographics of the community, and what kind of experience others have had. I hope others are curious too, so I'll make the results fully open after the survey has been running for one week. Feedback on the form is also welcome.

I posted it in Reddit and the Newbie boards already so it's on 80 responses -- apologies if you've already come across it there.

When do you plan to make the part 2?

Pretty rad, hopefully by the next time you review it there will be a larger sample size. Consider adding a link to it in your forum signature, you can get more people to take it this way.

This is really interesting. I hope the journalists take note of this especially:

Quote
The most common use of bitcoins was for gifts/donations (53%), while computer services was also quite high (44%). Only 9% of respondents have bought narcotics (using Bitcoin that is). In fact the community has a very large contingent of clean-living ascetics, 39% of respondents do not drink, smoke, take drugs, or gamble.

It goes against the usual "drugs drugs drugs" claims thrown around.

Edit: I suppose 9% is still a significant amount, but it's still  far from the primary use.

Also might be worth noting that the "Have you committed any Bitcoin sins?" poll is not answered by everyone (on a quick glance you might be forgiven for thinking 75% of all bitcoin users have mined on other people's hardware, when in reality it is ~9% - same as the amount buying narcotics, is there a link?!).

Just curious - how would mining on someone else's hardware work? Does it require physical access or are there people out there trying to remotely hijack miner hardware? Does "mining on someone else's hardware" include botnets as well?

Really unhappy with this survey. I'm an average Bitcoin user  :P

- on your workplace's local network (there was a news report of a guy caught doing that)
- botnets, there exists bitcoin mining malware

I guess it becomes much less likely or useful now this new dedicated mining hardware exists.
