Title: Store of value vs medium of exchange
Post by: xxjs on February 19, 2013, 01:18:00 PM
These can not be disconnected.

A fine day in the jungle:
-- Dude, I have codez. They are valueable. Interested?
-- Sure, how many for this piece of ganja?
-- Oh, sorry, they are not transferrable.
-- ????

5 minutes later:
-- Dude, I have codez. They are transferrable. Interested?
-- Sure, how many for this piece of ganja?
-- Keep it, you can have some anyway.
-- Ehh, okayee, what can I use them for?
-- You can keep them forever or donate them to who you like.
-- ????

Of course the relationship between usefulness as a store of value and usefulness as a medium of exchange can vary quite a bit.

A fine day in the jungle:
  • Dude, I have this very heavy, difficult to exchange, difficult to identify yellow rock that lots of people really want.  You can store it forever. Apparently is is valuable. Interested?
  • Sure, how much ganja you want for that one rock.
  • Your entire crop, and next year's crop too
  • I heard I can get 5 years crops worth of seeds for a rock that size, so ok

5 minutes later:
  • Dude, I have this crop of really tasty vegetables. Everyone seems to want them really bad. Apparently it is valuable. But you've got to exchange or eat it in the next 4 days or it will be worthless
  • Sure, I'm hungry, how much vegetable for this piece of ganja?
  • I'll give you 2 days meals worth of the vegetable for it

Gold value a lot, and it is not easy to transfer, but still many exchanges opened for trading gold

You can have exchange built upon valuable things, not the other way round
