Ripple is 100% premined, true.

But I believe it's an ambitious project born with a good purpose. In addition to its credit system ambition, it's also an alternative cryptocurrency design that does not consume lot of energy like bitcoin, the original goal that was my project ppcoin.

Even though I think such a project might be doable on a bitcoin fork ala namecoin style, but that's not the point. The developers need income to support them, or a reward/risk that is competitive in the job market. Looks like ripple has a few tricks to package and sell their product, if they succeed this way it would speed up the development of peer-to-peer free-market a lot I think. So I am cheering for them, as I always believe we are all part of a big team.

Since an exchange to bitcoin and altcoins are still not ready inside ripple, nor outside ripple, feel free to use this space to buy/sell ripples and experiment.

I don't really care if ripples were premined (Well, they weren't really mined at all,) because the currency really isn't even one of the coolest features in my opinion. It's more just some glue to support all the other features of ripple.

Once I get my free Ripples I will be able to start telling Ripple about all the various altcoins I would like to exchange for each other and for Ripples. That will just be a stopgap measure while I wait for the ability to flag an account as a "destination code required" account so that I can start trying to adapt the sample "web-based gateway between bitcoin and Ripple" code to other blockchain-based currencies.

Basically I am looking to issue Ripple IOUs denominated in the various coins my Open Transactions server (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=53329.0) already supports.

Hopefully those IOUs will help people to more easily exchange between those various currencies, however my model is more like e-gold or Pecunix than, say, MtGox or Vircurex or Bitparking. That is, the intent of the tokens/IOUs is to be long term 100% fully backed tokens backed by actual coins buried so deeply and securely in cold wallets that ordinary people are not expected to be causing the vaults to have to be dug up and dipped into on a day to day basis; rather, it is intended that market-makers buy and sell the tokens to help people get in and out of the markets.

Nonetheless if I can adapt the web-based-gateway code to alternate chains I might well end up running one of these market-maker type operations myself (a hot-wallet operator, basically) in addition to my token issuer operation (a cold (very cold!) wallet operator, basically.)

OP, are you creating a site or just the thread?

No site, just good old haggling in thread and pm, but my guess is plenty people are working on the gateways/exchanges/banks right now or pretty soon.

The trouble with the gateways is that you can't actually get them to give you XRP to meet the account reserve requirements--just IOUs. Perhaps there will be a gateway that also runs a centralized XRP exchange popping up soon.

Anyway, I can buy 2,001.000 XRP for 1 Bitstamp BTC IOU on the decentralized Ripple-internal exchange, so I'll offer to sell 2,000.000 XRP for 1 BTC.

To try to pin the value to something, 200 XRP is what you need to be holding in order to send and receive IOUs, and you need to be holding an additional 50 XRP for each person you extend trust to, or each order you have open on the decentralized exchange. (See https://ripple.com/wiki/Reserves (https://ripple.com/wiki/Reserves)). So 2100 XRP would be enough to stock up about 4 reasonably functional Ripple accounts, giving a functional Ripple account (at my XRP bid price) a USD value of about $7.50.
