Ive read about these before but really dont see the point. There is no internet. Users can chat and file share but why chat if your close enough to pickup a wifi signal? Also to share files what not just connect to each other via ad-hoc?

Not trying to be negative, I honestly would like so understand the product better.

Its use is in its portable and hand-off operation.  Where I can share files with many users without having to interface with each one.  The chat feature is great for live events.  Gotta use your imagination.

Without impacting your own internet service you can share with others nearby (neighbors?? people at a coffee shop, etc) .  You do not need to know them.  This has nothing to do with your internet IP so it adds a level of safety.

Some people just wanna share.  :)

i am new to the concept, but interested.

does this
need a wifi-adapter (usb)?
handle USB devices such as external 2.5" HDD to increas space?

how does this handle for the typical windows user? network drive? some sort of server-hotline?

It comes with a USB memory stick and the wifi is from the router so those are included.

It works through a webpage, once you connect to the box via wifi, all access leads to the page for sharing.  You can use an external hard drive in place of the usb memory stick as long as it is self powered.

so the pirate box has its own wifi, i connect to that wifi and see a website and have full read/write, is that correct?

Just heard about this, it seems really interesting. Would you say it could make for an easy-to-use file server for around the house?

Does the router come with a SSID hiding option?

You could manually configure that or wireless security but there are better projects then piratebox for that application.  I am not sure what combo is best but it used to be done with but here is one place to look:

http://www.dd-wrt.com/wiki/index.php/USB_storage#Network_Option_C_-_Use_Samba_and_Windows_Network_Neighbourhood

You could use the same hardware I sell most probably but it might not be the best match either.  Piratebox is on the tplink units due to size and low power use, there also may be better choices there for a private home file server.

Yes.  Full read/write on the web page but not delete!  The owner of the box can SSH in and delete stuff if needed.
