Title: Mexican Congresswoman Wants to Ban Internet Memes
Post by: Wilikon on May 05, 2016, 07:40:59 PM

Donald Trump wants a wall to stop illegal immigrants crossing the US/Mexican border, but one Mexican official wants a firewall to stop Pepe the Frog.

Well, not a firewall, but a fine. PRI party congresswoman Martha Orta Rodriguez wants any Mexican citizen who creates or disseminates internet memes to be arrested and slapped with a US$2000 penalty.

The congresswoman, who represents a district in Mexico that has over 2 million people living in poverty, said her proposed meme-ban would “deter violence or harassment [on] social networks” by preventing the spread of “harmful” or “humiliating” images.

Mexican netizens responded by taking to Twitter, sharing dozens of Photoshopped images of the politician on the #Ladymemes hashtag, including several comparing her to Jabba the Hutt from the Star Wars franchise.

this situation is  too unreasonable to handle.. banning is not the exact solution for such things.. we are living in a cyberspace age so nothing can be banned in internet.. this congresswoman must be so lunatic.

i dont think that this legislative proposal is irrational .. if someting is dangerous for our society , it can be banned. this is so normal. i dont thinks banning is not against to freedom of speech..

This is one useless proposal. The amount of meme's created by most people is massive and as result they might end of giving punishment to a lot of mexican online users than once in a while make some memes like everybody else. A better proposal would haven been only to those that make meme's about political subjects and leave other topics nonpunishable instead.

Can't expect anything better from these uneducated and illiterate Mexican politicians. What worries me is that if Hitlery becomes the president of the United States later this year, then she will invite all these illiterate hordes to the US, similar to the invitation handed out by Führerin Angela Merkel to the Arab Muslims of Middle-east.
