Title: What if all bitcoin nodes went down.
Post by: coldice on May 06, 2016, 05:46:49 PM
There are total 6798 bitcoin nodes. So, if all them went down or only 1 of them is alive then what will happen  ???

Improbable, but if such a scenario occurs, bitcoin would continue and follow what data does that node stored/have  IF there are still miners present to continue the chain of transactions.

It wont happen but if it did it would be bad but fixable.

People want to find a "dooms day" idea that scares people.   There are some people very committed to BTC where this will never happen.  Lets say it looks like it is in danger and nodes are dropping for some reason... the community will start more nodes.

Heck people could do it on a RPI and those could be deployed pretty easy, at little electrical cost.   And if your like me you have more internet (100 mbps) then you know what to do with  anyways.

Oh no. This is bad.  Please start a full node and run it.  Everyone, now. Let's get that number up to over 10,000.  Otherwise Bitcoin is doomed.  DOOMED I SAY DOOMED!

;)

I run a full node, and have for years.  Just for fun.  I allow only 8 outgoing and 8 incoming connections and that seems to keep the bandwidth used down to a reasonable level.  Disk space is cheap so that is not an issue at all.

not that easily, because thos enode are miners, if all miners farm went down, then bitcoin is fucked, those farm cost too much money already, building them again would require a major investment

and none out there would have the money anymroe to buy everything again

What is the probability that the whole internet will go down? It's also decentralized and it has never happened. The same goes for these file sharing torrent sites. We have nodes running in data centers with full redundancy and backup UPS's and also huge backup generators. Our downtime has been less than 3 days for 3 years now, and that was for rotational maintenance, so the whole center were not influenced, when we do this maintenance.

Now factor in how many other people run nodes in the same environment and work out what the chances of a global blackout will be, when backup plans exist to keep other networks running. It's not impossible, but it's highly unlikely.
