Title: Thanking the hacker that stole my ETH yesterday
Post by: Zedster on May 12, 2016, 11:29:59 AM
I just want to thank the asshole hacker that stole my shitty little amount of 114 ETH yesterday.  I can see you moved them Poloniex.  I hope the you do better with them than me as you felt more entitled to them I did.

The fact that Poloniex doesn't seem to give a shit that the hack originated from their site is also enough to make me sick.  Yes I am ranting and whining because I am just a little guy trying to get by, I am no threat, yet some scumbag that has nothing better to do but prey on the little guy who probably didn't have his security as tight as it should be steals my wimpy stash. This sad excuse for a person, has actually hurt my financial situation a lot more then if he had taken from some whale.

If anyone would know of anything that i can do to help stop this from happening to others I would like to know.  I don't have anything I can offer for a reward for return of my measly amount of coins lost except a small portion of them.  Also interest in hearing if this is happening to others lately.

Kicked when down,

Zed

Did you try contacting their support for more information?

And Did you have 2FA enabled?

Sorry to hear that, I really do but since you can't prove any of it to poloniex, it's understandable they won't do anything. It's not their fault really.

Always use strong passwords and two factor authentication on all exchanges.

And of course don't run random coin wallets on your main PC (use a throwaway PC or virtual machine, sandboxie, etc.). Antivirus/virustotal are never 100% reliable.

I have contacted them but no reply.  I only kept 10 ETH on Poloniex so i did not worry about 2FA.  I was naive and didn't think that they could get enough info from there to track down my wallet. But they did.  My stupidity.  I know better.

All my security was a joke because I got complacent. Will not happen again.

Try to send them a message on the trollbox, someone might reply.

Also, here is their subreddit:

https://www.reddit.com/r/poloniex/

Post a thread and hopefully one of their mods will help you out.

Damn.
Sorry, bro.

I also lost 13,000,000 DOGE coins because I didn't turn backups on, on Authy. :/
Hope you get them back.
Though it's highly unlikely that you would.

Very sorry to hear that,Poloniex should also have an investigative support so they can address this kind of issue whenever one is arises they are also making a profit from their investors, but now it's almost impossible to get that all back ..

How did you get hacked? We just want to learn from your experience and not be hacked ourselves.

He used an easy password & no 2FA.
I'd recommend you to use 2FA always..

Yes he was I think. I think he downloaded some software that had a keylogger in it and them his credentials were simply stolen and they took the ethereum out of his wallet. I think that people who do this are very pathetic.

Tip:Don't hold coins in a an exchange.

Yes Windoze. I don't play with big amounts of anything, so yes, whip me for Bill's abortion.

No to keylogger. Still working timelines out but everything having to do with ethereum was downloaded and then deleted from my hd.  Including entire ethereum chain and json wallet file.  I was not quick enough to shut down (I saw this happening) to say the least. I could have run undelete and recovered and probably beat them to it if I had reacted a bit faster.  It took them 90 mins to move the coin. Coins went to Poloniex according to chain. That was when I tried my Poloniex account and it was not accessible.  No I am not really mad at Poloniex.  I kinda thought they would be more interested in a breach but maybe they just happen too much.  I have written it off.

Sorry for your loss,  OP.  That's totally shitty and I do hope there's something you can do.

FWIW some cheap malware protection:

1) There are options in Windows that force the user to ok the downloading of any files or the execution of any external exe stuff. Your browser can also force the permissions on any Java stuff.

2) Malwarebytes is the poor mans anti virus software.

3) Always check task manager at least once a day and become familiar with every allowed process

4) Run MS's free malware scan tool.

5) Always turn off your computer when not in use or at least pull the cat cable.

6) When you see something fishy going on that you don't like, disconnecting the cat cable is the first and fastest thing you could do.

Could you share what version of the Mist wallet you are using?

NO 2FA + Poloniex then your coins will be gone.

This has happened sooooo many times i highly suspect it's one of their staff doing it.

Just upgraded to 0.7.2 and like I mentioned earlier.  I just made my first transaction with it when minutes later strange things started happening.  But I no proof of anything.  There are a million ways this could have happened. Not anymore.
