Blockchain.info is not the blockchain. It is just a site that shows information about the blockchain. You would need the wallet.aes.json file which can be downloaded from the wallet home screen. On the login page if you click the Download Backup button there are some instructions. A refresh backup needs to be made after a new address is generated, not after every transaction. Title: Re: if https://blockchain.info/wallet was shut down (FBI) could i get my BTC out Post by: Gabi on February 28, 2013, 03:30:00 PM If you backuped your wallet from blockchain.info then you are ok.
If you didn't and you totally relied on blockchain.info and you do not have the wallet on your computer/usb key/paper wallet, then you are fucked (and you deserve that, not having a backup of your wallet? fail) Title: Re: if https://blockchain.info/wallet was shut down (FBI) could i get my BTC out Post by: DannyHamilton on February 28, 2013, 03:30:06 PM do I need to get a new backup after every transaction? No. You need to get a new backup every time you create a new bitcoin address. As long as you have that backup, you can still access your bitcoin even if blockchain.info was shut down. If the FBI (or some hacker) gets control of blockchain.info, they will not be able to access your bitcoin (you are running the security browser extension (https://blockchain.info/wallet/browser-extension), right?) Ok so mutli bit them just looks at the last bit of the blockchain????? MultiBit looks at the entire blockchain, it just doesn't necessarily get its blockchain information from blockchain.info. It gets the blockchain information from any peer that it connects to that is running a full node. Title: Re: if https://blockchain.info/wallet was shut down (FBI) could i get my BTC out Post by: ryanbrownstar on February 28, 2013, 03:32:41 PM If you log into your wallet on Blockchain and head to Settings > General, you can configure automatic email backups. This will make it so that a new backup wallet gets sent to you any time there is a change in addresses (created or deleted) and ensures you've always got a good fallback point should anything go bad.

No paper backup? ;) Title: Re: if https://blockchain.info/wallet was shut down (FBI) could i get my BTC out Post by: ryanbrownstar on February 28, 2013, 06:15:08 PM The email backup is AES encrypted. As for a paper wallet backup - I don't think there is an option to do this automatically on blockchain, but you can do it manually.
Title: Re: if https://blockchain.info/wallet was shut down (FBI) could i get my BTC out Post by: Gabi on February 28, 2013, 06:40:47 PM I wonder how many blockchain.info users have a backup of their wallet. 1%?

I see the down load/email/google drive/drop dox but when I press download it just pops up a screen that has a string of numbers and only save as html or cut and paste Not a wallet.aes.json do I have to remname the cut and pase file into a wallet.aes.json??? it certainly does not look like a wallet.dat file can I upload the wallet.aes.json to multibit and other clients if yes what pass words do I need?? or keys I see the import/export link I click on that but nowhere does it let me export my wallet Title: Re: if https://blockchain.info/wallet was shut down (FBI) could i get my BTC out Post by: spark on March 30, 2013, 07:36:05 PM I also dont understand this string of numbers/letters and what to do with it.
However i just chose the 'email wallet' selection. Title: Re: if https://blockchain.info/wallet was shut down (FBI) could i get my BTC out Post by: jubalix on March 31, 2013, 12:20:04 AM Ok having been here a while we need something to explain this to newbies like me @ the time.
See Blockchain.info just confuses the $%$# out of people with the Block chain We have to explain that the BlockChain is the database, that anyone can get and 1000's of people have the blockchain.info is just one of may services to view that BlockChain and interact with it. Like email, I can use several clients to look at the same email over many years, except the blockchain is even better because not only microsoft/yahoo has my records, there are thousands of copys other people hold for me, and its all encrypted....so I and only I can view and build from scratch Also, when to back up, how, and why the downlaod button is missing from the export. Further explain how you rebuild from scratch your wallet of a different service by importing you private keys, and that every one should try this with 0.01 BTC so they are sure about what they are doing. Seriously! |
