Title: Bitcoin on Steam
Post by: squatz1 on May 18, 2016, 01:13:59 AM
I just noticed that on Steam, I went to purchase something and as a payment option Bitcoin was there. I tried it and it is extremely easy and simple. How long has this been there?

Has it been a month already? I could have sworn it was only a week or two ago.

Either way, Steam now fully accepts Bitcoin. Bovada recently started accepting Bitcoin, too. Probably doesn't mean for those who aren't interested in online gambling, but for those who are, Bovada is huge. Largest poker site in US and third largest worldwide.

Another good step for bitcoin! Looks like every services and products sold online will play along with bitcoin as mode of payment. Steam for example is a big company which might pull other company to use bitcoin. Payment using bitcoin is on hype now, i would not be shocked if it will be shown in world televisions.

This was one of the most anticipated events, we Bitcoin gamers were waiting for, and I would have thought that they would have announced that with some big special deals or discounts? I think they might just be testing the water to see if there are a need for this option.

We need to support this, or it might be taken down as a payment option in future. Even if you are not a gamer, just buy some games as some Xmas/Birthday gifts for someone who might be one.

This is precisely the point! Only technology readers actually know Steam added Bitcoin to payment options, there was no publicity, no pop-up when u start Steam saying you can now pay in Bitcoin..

Steam accepts Bitcoins On April 27
Valve itself turned to BitPay payment service with a proposal to integrate it into their gaming platform. The company was primarily interested in is to allow Bitcoin payment players in emerging markets - India, China and Brazil, where credit cards are used less frequently than in developed countries.

it is not just about how frequently they use credit cards.
most of the steam users are minor (younger people and many kids) and all over the world none of them have credit cards because they are underage or it is too soon to have a credit card so they either have to pay using their parents or they can easily use bitcoin with their own wallet.

It is perfect that you can now use Bitcoin as a payment method on Steam and so there will be also more people that is going to buy more on Steam because it is now acceptable.
There are now more people that is using Bitcoin as their payment method and that is perfect for the currency itself.

Exactly! That's what I was not thinking. Yes, this is also the cause of integration Bitcoins.
Bitcoin is still a great thing, for all ages.
However, there exist games that are intended for persons over 18 years.

It has been there not to long ago I believe that it has only been a month or so. But this will definitely benefit them both without a doubt.
With this both Bitcoin and Steam can become more and more popular.

Seems like you weren't active enough in the forums back then. The bitcoin adoption from steam was kind of a fuzz nearly a month ago. A lot of people have actually been using it and as far as I know, I haven't seen any report or issues myself and from other people.

I don't understand why people buy with BTCs there. In comparision with my country money for example the values aren't right. BTC costs more on a Exchange than on Steam shop.

It's a great update for sure, but they are devaluating the real price of BTC.

it has been official when they sent out emails to their developers saying they will add bitcoin even before the actually added it.
and you can easily check that,. just open up steam any of the markets and try to buy something and you will see there is a bitcoin logo alongside other things like credit card.

Yes it was quite an awesome find; if you haven’t yet figured it out; even larger agencies such as Microsoft and Newegg are accepting your bitcoin as payment. Newegg even pays it’s affiliates with bitcoin, so for those of you who are willing to make a website niche based around computer technology and want to receive bitcoin as payment for your affiliation, I suggest you go to Newegg.

Yes, this obviously will be better for the company seeing as how its customers will be able to deal direct to the company so they'll be more secure (this eliminates the middleman who sells steam codes at higher prices, be limited in stock and who could very well scam) and it also means that people like me who doesn't deal via CreditCard can deal with Bitcoin which I can buy without the need of the latter through other non-conventional means :) - works here in the Philippines :D

Yea I’ve been using bitcoins as payment for a while now, it was announced in late April, about the same time I joined Steam. If you’re a steam user and you use bitcoins as your daily income, I recommend using bitcoins as payment; you will need an app on you pc to make the transaction and it should be done within 45minutes.

MOL and Garena shells doesn't have any fee but for Steam I think around $10 to $15 percent.

I wouldn't say this was anticipated; it actually came as a surprise for us regular steam users. If you followed the reddit, you will realise that Gabe Newell, co-founder of Valve has pointed out he's issues on bitcoin. Here is what he said, "There are two related issues: one is treating a crypto-currency as another currency type that we support and the broader issue is monetary behaviors of game economies. The first issue is more about crypto-currencies stabilizing as mediums of account." As you can tell he wasn't really willing to accept bitcoin. So a month after this post it was quite a surprise to see bitcoin in the payment options.

Surely with that we can see more online business shops accepting bitcoin since bitcoin market is wider globally and maybe some of them are looking unto bitcoins now and make some marketing studies that it will profitable and convenient for them if the adopt it, and surely future will be great and next year there will be another online shop adoption will be happen and many people use bitcoins in future.
