Title: New topic limit
Post by: dingus on June 10, 2011, 11:50:52 PM
In order to stave off the inevitable new topic forum spam from new people with 1 or 2 posts, I think there should be a 30-50 post barrier in order to start making new topics. There's too many "BUY BUY BUY BUY" "SELL SELL SELL SELL" topics not to mention questions that could easily be found in the wiki or simply searching the forums. It is beginning to be difficult following topics as there are so many new ones being created now.

edit: Don't get me wrong..I understand we were all "once newbs" before. But, once more and more people start joining the forums it will be a PITA to sift through all the new topics. Also, I know not every new topic is the same and I look forward to all the awesome discussions started on these forums.

I like Atlas's idea of a new user area also, but I like this even more. It is the new topics that do the most damage. Droping important threads off the first pages and spamming up feeds with pointless topics.
This is the price of fame.

you're getting warmer.  i've posted on this a couple of times now - and there's no need to reinvent the wheel.

the best moderated site on the internet - without a doubt in my mind - is DailyKos.

it is almost entirely self-moderating.

posts and comments have a (more or less - actually, it's called mojo) 'like' button, and there is a 'TR' (Troll Rate) button as well.  if enough of your comments have been given mojo, at some point you earn the right to Troll Rate other users.  if a user gets enough TRs on a comment, the comment is hidden from the forum.  high-mojo users can see hidden comments, but nobody else can.  one or two TR ratings usually summons a moderator.

it's a little more involved than that - but it works very well.  people are allowed to make fools of themselves, but [EDIT: not] for long if they refuse to adhere to the rules of civilized and honest discourse.

i would urge the mods here to take a look at it.

i did forget to mention that on DailyKos, while you can post immediately, there is a delay before you can start a new thread - called a 'Diary' on Kos.
