Title: Is a blockchain search engine possible?
Post by: Sumo on May 21, 2016, 08:30:39 AM
Blockchains are ledgers.There has been a lot of talk that its possible to store records on blockchain. Would be useful to be able to search these records. What do you guys think? The google of crypto?

It's quite complex but that would be a great idea I have not for a long time done a search on blockchain with so many transactions going on but long time ago I stumble one site that has those features..

Interesting it would probably require a massive amount of storage and tranactions per second (depending on how it's implemented).

But even then, what about the hard part: indexing sites and doing it frequently?

"storing huge amounts of data is possible on tau's dht, while it can be timestamped securely and compactly on the blockchain. this is part of how we plan to replace google. the main bottleneck in competing with google is to have 1M computers like google has. a decentralized network may grow way beyond that." - Ohad, dev of Tau-Chain.

reward = discovery of a new object;
webmasters pay to rank with that object (finder gets a cut) (transferable title);

-some wild algorithm rewards 'cleaners' do sort the mess/clutter/spam sites
-another algorithm to rank content quality

2nd stage is that there is no website; just data (and ranking relevance scores)
[think torrents +TOR for fun]+[wiki]

now add Namecoin for URL

This already exists. Qora allows to create and store blogs and websites on the blockchain. You can also see it as a decentralized social network. if you go to a node ( [1] for example ) then you can search the entire blockchain for blog entries and other stuff stored there ( [2] search for the term 'test' ).

I do believe that we could develop a decentralized search engine based on the BLockchain technology. But would it be worth it? And what would be its main purpose?

Like lets say the dmv starts using blockchain tech to store everyones info. Or City Hall the deeds and tax offices etc. Yes that would be a lot of data and a permanent record that couldn't be shut down which would be good. Now can data stored on a blockchain be altered? You guys see where I'm going with this?

in theory you have something, in practice? That's another story. Block chains are opening a lot of eyes in fintech circles. The next 5 years are going to be quite interesting.

Main Purpose would be to Incentive-ize Open-Source systems and Reduce ATTENTION (traffic) from Oligarchical Search Engines (ie: Google, Yahoo, Bing. etc)
I can see this Incentive-izing Process be as Simple as Offering a Small Crypto Exchange every X amount of Searches (I can also see this being abused, so there can also be a limit like only 100 searches will count toward the Incentive per Day, etc)

Good Examples:
Ecosia which Plants Trees using their Ad Revenue from Search Results

I can't understand what you exactly mean for "google of crypto", unless you intend to create a blockchain containing all the internet I don't think it's possible.

But a multi-chain block explorer would be a good idea, I don't know why there aren't any

But if everything is recorded in the blockchain and it is immutable then how are you going to add pages to an already existing register of a website or how to delete web pages when those sites disappear? The blockchain is great but I think many people are trying to use it for things in which is not really the best solution.

Blockchain are recorders. Yes it is. It's like a snake, which is constantly growing tail. And if something like a virus is added to this chain? What will happen with the data? Is it possible to rewind them back. As far as I understand, reading the Blockchain begins with the tail?
