I have bought some Ethereum a while back ago and already doubled my investment. Ethereum price has been growing a lot and there's already a lot of people saying that Ethereum will be the next momentum currency.

What do you guys think? Should I hold some more?

Litecoin was a big thing, worth more than ETH is worth now, and was the biggest contender for Bitcoin's position as the main crypto 2 years ago. Now, it's valued at a small fraction of what it used to be.

Ethereum has it's uses, but the value of it is being driven through 90% speculation, and has very little substance below that. It is valued because it is hyped by people and it actually has something new. If there wasn't the hype about the value, ETH would be valued at an amount that is considerably smaller than what it is at currently.

We'll see where it goes, but there is next to know way ETH will surpass Bitcoin. The recent increase in value were investors panic-switching because of the BTC drop.

More than likely it won't , Ethereum price is indeed rising, however, It's without any valid reason while Bitcoin is rising because many users are coming daily (I don't think it's the case for Ethereum) , because more shops are using it daily (It's definitely not the case for Ethereum) and for the halving (not the case too) etc ...
Ethereum is based on pure Manipulation if ask me . I could be wrong, though !

Ethereum price is only driven by speculation and over speculation over DAO tokens. Nobody clearly nows how those DAO tokens will be used in real life application. But people are buying and made it one of the largest croudfunded projects in the world which have attracted more investors pumping price of eth as DAO is based on eth smart contracts. But i don't think this price of eth will be same after week from now, when DAO token exchange will be live.

ETH seems to have a new "point" system put in place every few months, it doesn't seem like there is much real substance with their systems now. It's always "this can be converted into this, this can be converted into this, and this is a reward for finding a way to convert this point into this other point system".

Ethereum exists to be used for smart contracts, and not as a real, value-holding currency, like Bitcoin. it can have a high market cap, high value, whatever it wants, but it won't surpass Bitcoin (primarily) because it just wasn't the first, and biggest, cryptocurrency.

It won't be easy, but if anyone can make it happen... it's Gregory Maxwell & Friends. 

We're going to see many currencies make ETH-like moves during the decade. I think the best investment opportunities will come from coins outside the scope of your question.

If we look at the bitcoin block explorer, we can see the blockchain is severely overloaded. If this level of incompetency continues within the core development, I think there will be many coins surpassing it in the near future including Ethereum.

The Ethereum team developed the smart contract systems properly so it is useful. I hope the Bitcoin based system can also be available.

The use of Ethereum for smart contracts is amazing. Decentralized autonomous organization is a game-changer.

Litecoin hit 1B. Regardless if your are a Bitcoin or Ethereum supporter, there should be some agreement that Litecoin is a worthless turd from the old days.

Eth have his edge right now and all the new things that has been build with this coin generates huge impact but replacing Bitcoin I think will take more time as Bitcoin already established trust and all the known features already been established I don't agree eth can surpass Bitcoin in the long run

Like what you post it's the momentum currency at this point of time  but it's not yet time for it to overcome Bitcoin  we'll first see what will happen after the halving then we can see if it is still a valid point to argue that etherium will overcome Bitcoin..

People are just assuming that because people are talking a lot about specific coin they are on the verge of surpassing what bitcoin has done you should first do a full and unbiased analysis  :D

I consider that it would surpass it if it has more users than it or if it has a bigger price. That's indeed not the case. The price could be a past problem for a few hours when the mining will stop and the income of new coins will be a lot lower, but the userbase will never be surpassed, except in the case of The DAO attracting the mass-media attention.

ETH may have to go all the troubles. but if these merchants experience to long wait of transaction confirmation and are introduce to other coin such as ETH, they will most likely use ETH as well.

smart contracts seem to be a thing now, and bitcoin can do it by itself. litecoin was just clone of btc with few variables changed and did not provide any new use cases. eth might be different from btc enough to have its own use and users, independent of btc.

One possibility to consider: all the press that Ethereum is getting will encourage more people to look (again?) at Bitcoin. Ethereum might end up pushing Bitcoin up.

Unfortunately, Ethereum will never surpass Bitcoin. Ethereum is a failure when it comes to being a currency because its turin complete, which leads to endless weaknesses for this end, this is why Satoshi made Bitcoin non turin complete in purpose.

In my opinion you should ethereum is just starting out and many projects and contracts are being launch that are associated with Ethereum,right now this is the best time to buy so many people are now dumping it on Yobit..

Kind of shocked that r0ach troll has not come in here to back this thread too.  I got into ETH at .0021 and have held onto the 4500 I bought, 3 months ago I started mining ETH.... I'm thinking it can go to $40 like LTC did. maybe in July sometime. Fingers cross as we say its all speculation anyway.

I beleive in the doomsday scenario. I think 7/11 will cause a free fall in the price of bitcoin, because the network will really slow down.

People will start sell their bitcoins to buy ethereum until the scalability problems solved in bitcoin. It will give an extra boost to ethereum and any other cryptos (dash) to get closer to Bitcoin price.

Ethereum has become phenomenal in this past few weeks, holding ethereum for me is going to be a good investment, there are a bright future for ethereum to shine, but i doubt it will surpassed bitcoin

I think nobody will know this for a while. If they can make it scale out and it can function once it gets widely adopted then yes I think it could surpass BTC with ease. When is casper and pos coming in?

I second this. Ethereum is more an application platform than a cryptocurrency. Ethereum is, therefore, more targeted to the business world. Bitcoin is more targeted to the everyday user. So the potential user base for Bitcoin is higher.

But it is perfectly possible that Ethereum in some point of the future surpasses Bitcoin - but that would mean Bitcoin is flawed, for example, because of its energy-consuming PoW system. If Ethereum changes to PoS without problems, then Bitcoin could be in trouble.

There is no problem with the PoS coins. There are many out there. But the PoW mining gives it more value.

Ethereum is just a trendy altcoin and all about it is mere speculation. Lots of new and "improved coins have born and gradually died without affecting the supremacy of bitcoin, so I would not be so enthusiastic about the future of Ethereum.

I haven't made up my mind about ETH yet but I'm going to play devil's advocate and assume it is unequivocally 100% superior to BTC.

Even in such a scenario I feel the best-case outcome for ETH is a 50/50 duopoly and the reason for that is, and I'm not academically literate in economics so correct me if I'm wrong, but markets tend to drift towards a power struggle between two competing resources/corporations/currencies. Now many markets reach an equilibrium before this happens (Forex has about 3-4 "major players") but other markets become dichotomous (Gold/Silver). Regardless of where the market reaches a sort of equilbrium their is always a TENDENCY for two, if there is ONE another emerges, if there are four two will merge, etc.

Now the second point I'd make is one of the first things I ever learnt when it comes to business, there are TWO ways to succeed and be relevant: be the best or be the first. Even in a world where ETH is crowned most superior crypto, BTC will remain the only viable alternative because of it's precedent/image/brand recognition. Bitcoin made one of the biggest impact on the world in the 21st century, that kind of impression isn't going to fade for decades.

So I think ETHs BEST-CASE scenario is a 55:35 market share split BTC:ETH. Again that still leaves tons of profit to be had, I personally predict MktCap of cryptos to hit 1tn by 2020.

There is no reason to think that can happen at least on short time, BTC looks very strong.

Ethereum is new coin there are not many people who accept it as payment method. Even bitcoin its self there are not many people who accept bitcoin. I suggest if you have got profit so sell them.

I believe ETH will someday surpass btc. but it would take years and years and bitcoin is already synonym of cryptocurency. its always bitcoin that people bear in mind when they hear about online currency.
One thing for sure though is that bitcoin will always have problems unlike the new innovations today.

August, and Ethereum will have a greater market cap. Bitcoin is not ready for halving and it seems it won't be solved as it seems right now.

You keep believing that, ETH has value in the cryptoworld, but bitcoin has conquered the masses, the normal person who only wants a wallet and send and receive from it, that's the strength of bitcoin, it is adopted by many people who know too little about crypto.

Ethereum is 90% premined and you can SCAM a lot of suckers, miners etc to invest, do short, be insane and lost all if invest long!

Ethereum is PoW mined coin. The premine proportion will reduce over time. I hope it will become PoW for long time.

I think without the help of the miners, the Etheruem could have been dead now. PoW mining secure the network.

The Ethereum market cap rose to almost $2 billion a few months ago. So it is not dead on arrival. It might rise further.

There are two chains of the Ethereum at the moment. They are attracting attentions from many investors now.

There are lots of talks or mentions about Etheruem in social media. It could be a good publicity for the Ethereum.

Ethereum is an altcoin that has good potential to increase its value, ethereum also has a smart contract that is used in ico, it will make ethereum in the fun and increasingly popular.

I do not think ether will exceed bitcoin as price but surely the total capitalization of ether will reach that of bitcoin.

It seems that ethereum (ETH) will not be able to keep up with Bitcoin let alone pass Bitcoin's price because in my opinion Bitcoin will stay on top of many issues that say Bitcoin will be replaced but for me it will not happen .. And if you now hold ethereum then keep enduring because now ethereum again creeps up and will continue to rise.

Although I believe that Eth has a prosperous future, I do not think it will manage to surpass bitcoin now. As a matter of fact, the bitcoin price is still huge. People are still putting their trust in it. The only thing that will make bitcoin cease to exist is people losing interest in it and internet shut down. Other than the mentioned, bitcoin is still going to rule as it is the number one king. Let us hope that it will survive no matter what happens.

Ethereum is an altcoin that owns excellent blockchain technology, it is the basis of many ICOs projects, every day this altcoin has a huge transaction volume. It's possible. If you have a look at Ethereum it is a very implemented one. You can use it for almost every payment option even it's no payment coin. Ethereums best usecase is smart contracts and over 95% of all ICO Token are running on ETH blockchain using ERC20 standard from Ethereum.
ETH is a very good one, but surpassing BTC will be very very difficult.

Moving on, I noticed many were bashing Ethereum back then. They are not cool with Ethereum and see where is Ethereum now. With this thread revived, maybe Ethereum could really surpass Bitcoin in every aspect. Practicality, process time, tx fee. A whole package for being a mainstream currency.

I don't really think that ethereum can surpassed bitcoin even in the future, but i truly believe that it could reach the current price of bitcoin today. And yes you should hold more ethereum if possible, to gain more profit in the future.

In comparison with ETH, LTC is trash. Although LTC is one of old cryptocurrency, but it’s pump and dump cryptocurrency too. It is going down below $100 from $160.

this may be a dream that will never come true, we all know Bitcoin is unique because it is the first crypto and with limit supply 21 million bitcoin, so its value is increasing because of the demand increases every year but ETH can not rise that much because its supply is not limitted making ETH harder to catchup with Bitcoin even in the future, but there still hope for ETH to defeat Bitcoin as long as its total value of all ETH rise stronger than Bitcoin.

For me this was very impossible, the etherium won't surpass the bitcoin because even though the bitcoin is still in a tragic situation it remain to the top and still the king of all cryptos and besides of that bitcoin has more benefits and advantages  than etherium.

Roger Ver is not convinced that Bitcoin will remain the "pinnacle" for a long time to come. In a recent interview, he mentioned how Ethereum would overtake Bitcoin in the near future. With the recent increase in the price of Ether, the original token of Ethereum, it is clear that things will be better.

I think bitcoin is enjoying a very big support being the pioneer currency in the history of cryptocurrency but if place side by side with ethereum and the like of litecoin they are having a more real life use than just be a mode of payment. It's possible but it may take time

ETH is a very good bet, it's the number one smart contract platform and is likely to remain so in the long-term. Smart contracts will be huge, and ETH is leading the way. It's always a good idea to buy more, but also always a good idea to spread your risk and not put everything on one project.

I still find it hard to believe what you write, ethereum can not beat bitcoin because bitcoin is the basis of crypto, and with it bitcoin will remain the main coin in crypto.

ETH has its own momentum but at the current condition of the crypto market, adoption and the community support bitcoin has the upper hand among all the altcoins, ETH has its own usage like smart contracts and token support creation etc but the main currency that we have is bitcoin that's why below it they are calling it altcoins, ETH is a good investment but do not focus solely on that currency alone, set your eyes on other altcoins to maximize the profit.

These are speculative questions. It is impossible to say for sure what will happen.
My advice is : invest in both.

I think based on my own experiences in crypto, Ethereum may have many uses compared to bitcoin - token creation and others, but Bitcoin is the king of the road until now. As long as many people continue to be bullish on bitcoin then there is no chance for ethereum to surpass its dominance in the crypto markets. Takes a while and a big crash to turn the tables around.

While there is a small chance it could happen even if it is for a short while, there are no strong reasons to believe so. With so many rival project platforms, the bigger  question is if Ethereum will be surpassed by one of those.

Etherium is a very popular crypto currency. It is based on a lot of smart contracts and start-ups. Perhaps, at times it will be more profitable than bitcoin. But still bitcoin is the gold of the digital age. It is unlikely that the capitalization of even such a powerful crypto currency as the etherium will exceed the capitalization of bitcoin.

ETH can never suppress Bitcoin. If we do the comparative analysis, we are able to understand why. First we look at the market value of ETH and Bitcoin and Bitcoin has a market value more than that of ETH. The market profitability for Bitcoin is also more. Popularity in the market counts and Bitcoin is more popular. General acceptability of Bitcoin is far more than that of ETH. Having said these all, I do not think ETH can suppress Bitcoin.

I also very much doubt that the Eth will be able to reach those heights that reached Bitcoin. But the fact is that in recent times the public trust to bitcoin has fallen very badly and it is necessary to consider such a situation when Bitcoin and the etherium will go in opposition to each other. Bitcoin descend, and the etherium ascends.

For me bitcoin will remain in its original position no one can replace or surpassed it.Ethereum is a good coin also but it will not go over the price of bitcoin.

I think that is not an easy statement to justify, i do agree that ethereum provides more options, more features, more services, more utilities etc but bitcoin is the king and the first ever working product of the blockchain technology, i think it is here to stay and you can check its high dominancy despite thousands of new coins.

I believe that holding more Ethereum is a great thing to do since Ethereum has a very likelihood of increasing its value. Ethereum has a high probability of profitability that's why many are resorting to it. I believe you should hold more, as much as you can.

On the part if Bitcoin will be surpassed by Ethereum, we cannot say for certain but in my honest opinion, there is a good likelihood. Ethereum is a great coin for p2p transactions. It is much practical compared to Bitcoin.

The price of ETH have moved a lot after the correction and it is a good thing for the market but that does not mean that it will surpass the valuation of bitcoin, ETH has its momentum as a platform for other projects to issue their tokens and i am not using it as a currency and so does majority of the users.

It won't happen in this year for sure. But in the future, nobody knows because if ETH get it's momentum, I won't be surprise if ETH will compete BTC , one day.

Yes, it's over Ethereum can overtake bitcoin and this event is very close. Vitalik Buterin recently reported about new developments that will be implemented in Ethereum and I think this event will greatly affect the price of this token.

even after those developments ethereum can not surpass or overtake bitcoin . bitcoin controls the market , with its each movement market can be pumped or dumped . while ethereum price will only affect a few alts . bitcoin acts like fuel of crypto it is the power source . also check the dominance of bitcoin and other coins .

Why dao token? We talk about bitcoin and also etherium. Dao does not have power to replace bitcoin but only etherium has that power but also not enough to replace bitcoin. Bitcoin will always in the top and its the leader of crypto and most of cyptocurrency follow bitcoin price.
