Title: Ripple: XRP Price Tracker
Post by: misterbigg on March 01, 2013, 09:31:02 PM
I will track the price in XRPs of one Bitcoin in this thread. If the XRP price goes up it means that XRPs are becoming cheap, while descending values indicate that XRPs are becoming more expensive. For now the price is quoted based on the most liquid gateway (currently Bitstamp). If there is a website that graphs this data automatically please let me know!

Ripple market cap: $78,000,000 (@ $47/BTC)

3/15/2013: 60,000
..
3/13/2013: 58,000
...
3/11/2013: 51,000
...
3/8/2013: 43,000
3/7/2013: 40,500
3/6/2013: 39,500
3/5/2013: 45,000
3/4/2013: 17,350
3/3/2013: 27,500
3/2/2013: 41,388
3/1/2013: 71,000
2/28/2013: 65,000

The Ripple market cap is calculated by dividing the total amount of XRPs in existence (100 billion), dividing by the snapshot average of bid and ask, and multiplying by the price of BTC at the time.

The methodology for determining the day's price is calculated by taking the average of the bid and ask at one moment in time. That there will likely be little to no actual volume available at that price due to the illiquidity of XRPs and the size of the order book.

You know what, internal Ripple trading is even better than that! Currently bitstamps BTC/XRP even shows negative spread, so you can make gazillions of whatever buying at ask, and selling at bid! Highly recommended.

LOL. Well since there is no historical information I'm just tracking the price in a very rough way so we can see it's evolution.

No need to trouble yourself. Anyone interested in historic trades inside Ripple system should subscribe to #ripple-market IRC channel - all the trades are translated there. As well as changes in bid/ask and so on.

There's no historical graph. Anyway, seems that the price of XRP has gone up! I updated the list.

If you want to keep the updated price, please do it properly.

I add a new entry once per day. This morning it was at where it was. I don't update it every second.

Thanks mrbigg...

arvicco it's buying a lot of xrp, right now is offering 1 btc for 60000 xrp.

but still it's giving almost 1 btc, for all the giveaway, i think xrp will be more expensive later.

So, i want to see how this goes.

Cheerz

arvicco it's buying a lot of xrp, right now is offering 1 btc for 60000 xrp.

Right now you can get 1 BTC for only 41,500 XRP so Arvicco's is paying 33% below market. Or, to put it in other terms, anyone who wants to sell their XRPs would be much better off just doing so through the Ripple client.

Whoops, I copied the wrong side of the order book

Title: Re: Ripple: XRP Price Tracker
Post by: misterbigg on March 02, 2013, 08:28:18 PM
...so please get your facts straight...

Regardless of the details, the one fact is that your offer is consistently worse than the Ripple order book.

Anyone who wants to sell XRP would get more Bitcoins by going through the Ripple than through you.

Title: Re: Ripple: XRP Price Tracker
Post by: misterbigg on March 02, 2013, 09:02:08 PM
this is NOT at all correct.

Yep, unfortunately you're right about that. The damn Ripple order book sure is confusing. I should have copied the Ask side (right hand side).

This doesn't change the fact that you consistently offer worse deals than what could otherwise be obtained via the Ripple client.

Title: Re: Ripple: XRP Price Tracker
Post by: misterbigg on March 02, 2013, 09:14:07 PM
You may repeat this million times, but still it won't become a truth. My offer is in real BTCs, for people who are not interested in IOUs and do not want to learn all the quirks and soldier through all the bugs of beta systems that in-Ripple IOU exchanges are. I have absolutely nothing against more people playing with these exchanges, but why compare apples to oranges?

For anyone who values Bitstamp BTC IOUs identically to actual Bitcoins, your prices are consistently worse than what is in the Ripple order book. Just admit it that so we can move on.

Post by: alexkravets on March 02, 2013, 10:08:14 PM
Best bids and asks in the BTC/XRP ripple book are usually for such tiny amounts of BTCs that they are meaningless, somebody (hint: ripple.com) needs to publish a 24-hour rolling volume-weighted price (there is a field for last trade but that's empty ATM) based on actual sales.

Soon enough this should emerge on some website, hopefully.

It was the average of the bid and ask at the time I looked. Keep in mind that the market for XRPs is not very liquid so there will be large fluctuations and a thin order book.

and therefore your daily update is currently senseless

the last ask price when i looked was ~37,000xpr at a amount of 0.00255 btc thats are ~95 xrp you can sell
in other words a daily update at this time is more irritating than it have a certain added value

...at this time is more irritating than it have a certain added value

You can always look at the live Ripple order book if you want up to date information. But currently there is no way to get any sort of historical data (like the bid/ask at the end of last month). So I disagree that it doesn't add value. Besides, you're free to simply not look at this thread.

Has OpenCoin stopped giving away free XRP? Is that why?

Has OpenCoin stopped giving away free XRP? Is that why?

Really, at this early stage it's impossible to say why the price is moving. The market is highly illiquid and the tools for studying it haven't even been written yet (hence, my creation of this thread)

Title: Re: Ripple: XRP Price Tracker
Post by: misterbigg on March 03, 2013, 09:51:58 PM
I think this thread serves no purpose except to boost misterbigg's ego. The numbers he quotes here are not based on anything other than his fantasies. If anyone wants to track REAL in-Ripple XRP/BTC market, all you need to do is just subscribe to #ripple-market IRC channel.

Yep, if someone wants to listen in on real time trades they can definitely use IRC to get the data. They can also run the Ripple client software periodically to see the order book.

I'm not making any claims that there is significant volume of XRP at any of the prices I listed. All I am doing is posting a once-daily sampling of the average of the bid and the ask (and I'm being transparent about it). If you don't find this information useful, then feel free to ignore it. It does provide less up to the minute data than what you could get from IRC or the Ripple order book.

On the other hand, for people that do not have an interest in participating in the Ripple market and don't want to continually log the IRC channel, but do want to see a very rough estimate of the direction of the XRP price on a day to day basis, then this thread is for them.

Best bids and asks in the BTC/XRP ripple book are usually for such tiny amounts of BTCs that they are meaningless

The amounts are certainly small but I wouldn't say that the best bid and ask are meaningless, especially if you look at how the values evolve over time (which I am doing in this thread).

Quote
somebody (hint: ripple.com) needs to publish a 24-hour rolling volume-weighted price (there is a field for last trade but that's empty ATM) based on actual sales.

That would certainly be a lot better. Are you volunteering to do this? It's a bit beyond the scope of what I'm willing to commit to.

Just seems weird to me that if people can get 50,000 XRP for free, why the market price for 50,000 XRP is ~$30-35.

Title: Re: Ripple: XRP Price Tracker

Just seems weird to me that if people can get 50,000 XRP for free, why the market price for 50,000 XRP is ~$30-35.

You can only get 50,000 XRP for free once (well, without trying to game the system). Actually I think they lowered the hand out to 40,000 XRP.

Since there are absolutely no goods and services available for purchase using Ripple IOUs, we must assume that XRPs current valuation is purely speculative.

It seems that OP is not interested in any meaningful discussion, and intolerable to the point that if you call his bullshit straight, he is going to start a smear and libel campaign against you. See evidence here: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=148806.0. Locked, no less, to give him the last word on it.

Not true. I started the price tracker thread and immediately Arvicco jumped in with claims that my calculations are "bullshit" and that I was deceiving everyone. Then he deleted his posts, and now he claims that I'm libeling even though all I am doing is laying out facts and backing them up. I locked the thread because one of the accusers didn't step forward with more evidence but Arvicco prefers it unlocked so I am accommodating him. Far from being "not interested in any meaningful discussion" I am very responsive.

It's value is purely speculative as has been said.
I would say many people is just holding the coins with no estimate of what should be the price and fear of miss-selling. Other speculators are buying because they think they will rise in value.
Of course there must be also people who are just cashing out ASAP, it just seems that there are more speculators on the other side.

I was watching this carefully, XRP was evaluating agiasnt BTC until about 20 HRS ago, it then dropped massively and then BTC did a jump to its high, and XRP dropped more.

To me it appears XRP dropped just before the BTC took of today.

to give you and idea

XRP B16/A22 BTC 33 (ish) 20 hours ago

then
XRP B35/A40 BTC 33 ish

then

BTC ---> 40

XRP B4X/A5X

To me it looked like  XRP went BEFORE BTC did, like a lead indicator

The price of XRP denominated in Bitcoins definitely dropped, there's no ambiguity here. Now if you want to talk about the price of XRP in US Dollars that's a different story.

No, because I don't store historical information on Bitcoin prices at the time I sample the XRP exchange rate. Although it is something I could consider. But hopefully someone will put up a simple web page that tracks XRP price automatically.

There's more depth in the order book, but Bitcoin's rise in price hasn't affected the XRP price. Therefore, the total value of all potential XRPs has gone up quite a bit.

When XRP was @20000 there was almost no ask size, only ~5BTC between 20K and 40K.
Fascinating to watch, even if the moves are mostly random ping pong in illiquid market.

Yes, XRPs appear to be "pegged" to USD, BTC Price going up will devalue them relative to BTC (for now ...)

Title: Re: Ripple: XRP Price Tracker
Post by: jtimon on March 11, 2013, 07:10:48 PM
With the amazing rally btc is experimenting, it seems more reasonable that xrp fluctuates around usd instead of btc.
It's just traded more for btc than for usd because btc is more liquid, at least here.
But it makes it harder to track the price...

Title: Re: Ripple: XRP Price Tracker
Post by: alexkravets on March 11, 2013, 07:21:11 PM
Actually, there is really no need to track the price at all.

OpenCoin appears to have a "crawling peg" policy of having XRPs gradually appreciate against USD over time.  They do have control of 99%+ of all XRPs in existence and there is really no real "secondary" market for XRP against anything else at this point, just occasional test trades.

Cheers ...

So save your 'tude BRAH (i just imagine that this is what you would respond to. Good Day Sir!)
Really?? You're complaining about someones supposed attitude by heaping on the attitude yourself?? Really.
I know this isn't worth responding to but ...

First why are you even bothering to replying with a nit pick to something 3 weeks old? Look at the dates on the posts.

Second, look at the two (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=148185.msg1697395#msg1697395) posts (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=148185.msg1870805#msg1870805) above those to see that the the bitcoinchart being discussed (http://bitcoincharts.com/charts/rippleXRP#rg60zigHourlyzczsg2013-04-17zeg2013-04-18ztgSzm1g10zm2g25) was showing prices in the range of ~15k - ~20k per BTC for that date+time. The 60k you mentioned was ancient history. Either the poster I was replying to didn't bother to look at the charts or was thinking that 30k was a better price. At best I should have perhaps asked if they had looked at the chart instead of assuming they had.

As I said (and is still the case) "All the offers I've seen on the forum have been way worse then what you can get inside Ripple."
