Title: Mitigation to new forum software?
Post by: TookDk on May 25, 2016, 09:21:17 PM
Forgive me if this has been answered before. I could not find a post where these questions have been answered.

How will the mitigation to the new forum be done?
Should we already now register in the beta?
Or will there be a cross over period at some point?

From what I understand, all posts currently made on the Beta will be gone. Once it is ready, the final mitigation from all content will happen and the forum will transition to the 'new version'.

How will the mitigation to the new forum be done?
The same way that it is being done now (the topics/posts up until a certain date are there).

Should we already now register in the beta?
All accounts have been transferred, you just need to reset your password there.

May I ask which forum software is it migrating too? Currently you are using SMF, are they going for a commercial software now? Like Xenforo or VB? Or some another free one like MyBB or phpBB?

The forum is not moving to any commercial software. The forum has been developing it's own software for quite some time now. You can find more information about it using the Github page: Epochtalk (https://github.com/epochtalk/epochtalk). The forum is also currently in open beta which can be found here (https://beta.bitcointalk.org/).

Own forum software... wow! That's gonna take a lot of time and trial and error to reach its first stable release. I was one part of a team that were building their own BB software, I had to leave because of other work but I know the progress is very slow, especially when you're not working full time on it.
Anyways, hope it will be a good one once we have it. Good luck to the dev team.

Well the forum has been in the pipeline for quite a long time now and IIRC theymos has spent more then US$1,000,000 so far in development. To so give you an idea of how long we have been waiting for the new forum, here is a thread from 2013: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=236325.0

edit: discussion of the new forum started in early November 2011
