Title: Announcing: #bitcoin-otc, bitcoin-otc.com - over the counter marketplace
Post by: nanotube on October 18, 2010, 02:15:44 PM
I have started an OTC marketplace in IRC channel #bitcoin-otc on freenode. People can enter their supply/demand orders into the order book, and complete transactions OTC.

Feel free to join the channel, and to check out the web site with instructions and order book: http://bitcoin-otc.com .

Click here to use freenode webchat to join the channel: http://webchat.freenode.net/?channels=#bitcoin-otc

Any thoughts, comments, suggestions, questions are welcome. :)

The instructions say that PayPal "personal gift transactions ... are not chargeback-able". In a sense that's true, but those transactions can still be reversed by PayPal if they were made fraudulently (e.g. by someone who stole the login credentials of the legitimate PayPal account owner). So don't assume that they are irrevocable.

Also, is there a way for the recipient to know whether or not the payment was designated as a gift? Maybe the PayPal email says "You have received a gift" or something similar; I don't know.

my current understanding is that the only transactions that come through without any fees are ones which are from (a) pp/bank balance and (b) personal. so if you receive a tx and no fees have been taken out by pp, then you know it's from balance, and is personal.

An international bank account transfer based payment processor that I found is Alert Pay.

It is Canadian Based.  It requires users to be verified, which will instill confidence with transacting parties.

It comes complete with API integration if you like.

Credit Card based transactions is also possible for the brave - but those preferring more secure, non-chargeback transactions - bank transfers are offered.

To get your FREE account with AlertPay, click on this link:  https://www.alertpay.com/?hr8ZCMa6QOBJpH0tRiiz3w%3d%3d

If you do not mind, I will get referral fees if you click on the link, as I have also gone through a lot of trouble of searching for a true, fully international, western based, stable payment processor alternative to paypal.

Hope this might assist all the Bitcoin OTC customers to fund and economically transfer funds internationally for their Bitcoin buy and sell transactions.

maybe, sounds like an interesting alternative.

you're more than welcome to come in and place a bid/ask on bitcoin-otc in exchange for alertpay funds. the OTC market does not have any restrictions on what can be traded for btc, so alertpay is just fine.

Another service for bitcoin-otc: there is now a web-of-trust for OTC users. See http://trust.bitcoin-otc.com/

Thoughts and comments welcome. And of course you are also welcome to join us on #bitcoin-otc on IRC to participate in the OTC marketplace and the web of trust. :)

and on top of all that... pgp is even optional. :) but it doesn't hurt to have a pgp key on file, for that extra bit of identity verification on top of what the irc network does.

Nice idea. Though, wouldn't it be more secure to use some SSL-supporting IRC network, instead of freenode?

Freenode supports encryption on ports 7070 and 7000.

OK cool, didn't know that. Must be pretty new, when I checked last time they didn't support it yet.

well, it's /relatively/ new, but it's been more than a year at least. :)
