Title: Need help with 6x 280x Rig
Post by: Dementia on June 03, 2016, 04:06:50 PM
Hello everyone.

I' ll begin by mentioning the hardware : Asrock H97 Anniversary, 2x Sapphire Vapor-X 280X, 2x Club3D RoyalQueen, 1x Sapphire 280X Toxic, 1x Sapphire 280X Tri-X OC, 2x Coolermaster SilentPro 1200W Gold, 1x Coolermaster 700W (don't remember model right now), Intel Celeron G1840, Patriot SSD 120GB and 4GB of Kingston RAM (1 stick).

The problem is that i can't get it working. I' ve tried Windows 7, 10 and Ubuntu 14.04.
On Windows 7 i installed the custom drivers i found somewhere here and i got all 6 GPUs recognised but the hashing rates were too low.
On Windows 10 windows don't even boot. I get the "critical process died" after the Asrock logo. It boots up on safe mode without problem and when i uninstall the drivers then it boots up normally until windows installs the GPU drivers automatically and then i get the same BSOD.
I was able once to mine Ethereum with all 6 GPU's on Windows 10 at full speed with 1350W from the wall but the RIG shut down after 1.5 hours. ( not because of overheating)
On Ubuntu 14.04 i get all 6 GPU's recognised but when i start ethminer the PC freezes.

I start to suspect that it's a hardware problem.

A few details about the connections :
The 700W CoolerMaster gives power to the mobo 1x24 pin, 8pin CPU, 1x Sata for SSD, 1x Molex to mobo for the pci-e slots and 6x Molex for the powered risers.
Then the 2x 1200W CoolerMaster give power to the 6x 280X's. 3x 280X each.

Each PSU 1200W has 4x 6pin and 4x 6+2 pin for pci-e in total but 4 cables of 1x6pin and 1x8pin each. The 2xClub3D GPU's need 1x6 pin and 1x8pin and the rest 4 GPU's need 2x8pin each. So i have connected on each PSU 1 Club3D using one cable of 1x6pin and 1x8pin, 1x Vapor-X using 2x8pins from 2 different cables and 1x Tri-X or Toxic using 1x8pin from the last pci-e cable and 1x8pin - 2x Molex adapter.
I am using paperclip to start the 1200W PSU's witch i turn on before i boot the PC.

Any help would be appreciated. I am frustrated. If you need more information about something let me know and thanks in advance.

Im just gonna say this. I bought a BTC H81 Pro board and 6 Sapphire R9 380x cards. After everything was installed i turned the unit on. I had already installed windows 10 pro with latest updates on the SSD with no other drivers except what windows installed. With the unit hooked to the internet let windows auto install the video drivers.

After about 15 mins of downloading and screen flashing it was updated. I then grabbed my flash drive and transferred my miner by Claymore 4.3. There is a new one out but im running well with 4.3. May change over to 4.5 soon. I did not install any other drivers for the mother board or download any specific driver for the video card. It does show to have installed 15.11 driver but is running stable for more than 3 weeks at 128.9mh. I have since bought two more rigs another exactly the same and one that has 4 MSI 380 cards.

The driver installed for the MSI cards is the 15.12 driver. Im not sure why it picked these drivers but i have had no issues. The MSI is running at 20.1mh with a slight over clock in After Burner. Lots of talk about specific drivers but i found this worked best for me. If you can do a fresh copy of windows 10 and this is a driver issue this may fix it. I did have an issue this morning with a hdd i was using. It would start mining for about 30 secs then it would disconnect from the internet. I tried for an hour before swapping hdds with the SSD in the other rig. It booted and worked perfect and has been on since about 6 am without issue.

This hdd is an older drive i had laying around. It could be failing but i think it was from trying to install all the drivers as suggested from around here. Im not saying anyone is wrong but my other units are working 100% without any problems. This maybe far from your issue but just wanted to give this info just incase. :) Good luck

When the miner starts up on my multi-card rigs, they APPEAR to freeze for a while when loading the buffers.
Eventually the hard drive stops getting hammered and they wake back up and start mining - but it can take a couple minutes.

Are you talking freeze for more than 10 minutes (you have more cards to load up after all)?

Make sure you have at least what was it 16 GB virtual memory (swap).

Even with all 6 cards it doesnt take but about a minute from the time i hit the power button on my rig and then open Claymores miner that i start hashing. Im not sure why it is taking 10 mins for your start up but that seems very long.

You need the Catalyst 15.7.1 or later to get it work properly. You can search the forum to find the 7+ GPU mod.
