A Christian was knifed to death after Sunday prayers near a church in northwest Bangladesh in an attack claimed by Islamic State.

Police said unidentified attackers murdered the 65-year-old in the village of Bonpara, home to one of the oldest Christian communities in Muslim-majority Bangladesh. “Sunil Gomes was hacked to death at his grocery store just near a church at Bonpara village,” said Shafiqul Islam, deputy police chief of Natore district.

Isis claimed responsibility for the murder through its Amaq news agency, according to the Site monitoring group, saying it was “part of a series of operations” in Bangladesh.

The killing came hours after the wife of a senior anti-terrorism officer was murdered in the southeastern city of Chittagong by suspected members of a banned local extremist group.

Bangladesh is reeling from a wave of murders of secular and liberal activists, and religious minorities, that have left more than 40 people dead in three years. Authorities have blamed homegrown Islamists for the attacks, which have spiked in recent weeks, rejecting claims of responsibility from Isis and a South Asia branch of al-Qaida.

To be honest about this, Isis they will kill any one at all, no matter what religion you may be, non religious people also get murdered.

I used to appreciate the Sheikh Hasina-led government in Bangladesh (one of the last remaining secular governments in Muslim-majority nations). But now, this religious violence is getting out of control. Proper measures must be taken, or else the ISIS is going to establish itself very firmly in that country. A first step would be to seal the India-Bangladesh and Myanmar-Bangladesh borders.

More than three dozen individuals have lost their lives in various ISIS attacks in the last three years in Bangladesh. In most of the cases, the perpetrators have not been detained. Not surprising though. The secular nature of the Bangladeshi society has been under pressure, ever since the Petro-dollars from Saudi Arabia and Qatar started flowing in the 1980s. Three decades of brainwashing is finally bearing rewards for the Salafists.

Government need to act fast in such issues because these incidents affects the peace within the country. Though Bangladesh has got majority Muslims there is not much of clash between religions.

Bangladesh is a secular country, at least on the outside. The vast majority of its citizens are secular, unlike the other Muslim countries such as Turkey and Pakistan. However, it is one of the poorest countries in the world, and is heavily dependent on aid from the GCC nations such as Qatar and Saudi Arabia. The GCC nations are the ones who are creating trouble in Bangladesh.

I also agree with you two. They need to have not just a temporary solution but a permanent solution to that problem.

During the last few days, two Hindus (a priest and a monastery worker) were hacked to death in Bangladesh, and yet the western media ignored those incidents. Dozens of Hindus, Atheists, and Buddhists have lost their lives during the past few years in Bangladesh. The media will highlight the news only if the victims are Christians.

This ISIS group is just having fun killing, they are sick bastards.  I think they are just using the name of Islam.  Government should act on this.  They just ruined everything, lives of innocent people even the building that was built a long time ago.

All the screaming that god - nationwide . Nevertheless, there is a war , which arose because of different beliefs in the world. And what's the point of it all ? Why try to prove something to someone who does not want to hear from you . Pray to your god even a lifetime . But do not impose your idea to others.

So true.  Conflicts on religious beliefs, teachings, and ideals were the reason for misunderstandings.  And it was the reason used by this evil minded ISIS in continuing their gruesome acts.  They uses their teachings to punish and kill people who are not on the same beliefs as they are. 

I have never understood the motive of ISIS or any other terrorist group. Most of them claim to be muslims but whatever they are doing is even against the Islamic teachings. They end up killing everybody including their own 'brothers and sisters'. I think these are just psychologically challenged people using religion as their scapegoat.

The partition of India was such a big mistake. In the Eastern Pakistan (which is now Bangladesh), Muslim majority districts such as Maldah and Murshidabad were given to secular India, while the Hindu majority Khulna and the 99% Buddhist Chittagong Hill Tracts (CHT) were given to Pakistan. It is well known that non-Muslims can't live with dignity in a Muslim nation. Considering that, the non-Muslim districts should have never been given to Pakistan.

Their claims for being muslims and having the correct view on Islamic teachings is not without a sound basis.  Islamic teachings can be interpreted many ways.

Nothing is new with this kind of news.  Muslims murdering Christians, I mean evil minded Muslims because not all Muslims are like that.  Because they thought that their teachings were the one should all people consider.

This is the biggest joke. The so called moderate Muslims don't go around blowing up shopping malls or beheading people, but I am yet to see them taking out marches and demonstrations condemning the actions of terrorist groups. But when some far-right politician makes a comment against them, they are very quick to organize protest rallies.

I agree with you.  Not all Muslims are bad.  I have a friend who is a Muslim and she is a happy, well mannered, and so loving.  Everytime she will see or hear bad news about this she cannot help but feel sad.  They were known or their religion is known and marked as bad religion because of this people who just wanted cruelty.
