Title: RX480 retail selling premium
Post by: 64dimensions on June 06, 2016, 06:18:47 AM
While the RX480 stated retail list price is $199, what do people think the retail premium will be during the first couple of weeks?

IIRC, around 01/2014, 280's and 290's had a quantity 1 premium of about $30 - $50 depending on brand.

Also, has anyone ever attempted a group buy for GPU's?

i think 250 at early, then you need to wait one month for the price to drop

but it depend on the demand, if the demand is too havy, the price might increase beyond expectation, like it happened in the past with amd for the 280x

Yes and it turned into a scam. Maybe 150 gpus were paid for and the guy scammed everyone.

I have a contact at provantage.com.  I could ask if he can get bulk and what discount he will give.

It should do 28mh at under 200 watts for 199 usd.

And maybe it will be available in early july

28 MH/s at 200 is about 7.1J/MH. That is worse then the R9 390 (undervolt ones). The 390 will also be cheaper too.

I think the 480RX can do 22 MH/s at around 100W. If so, I will not sell my 390 to buy the 480 RX any time soon.

Phil,

I would think it would be worth looking into.

Between here and the ETH forum, I would think there would be a lot of interest.

Strong chance I got the numbers wrong   since I can't find the post I read from the guy that claims to have tested the r9 480.

And I read and post way too much so a numbers mixup is easy.

22-25 at 100 W is worse than the R9 nano. But the Nano's price is much higher than the $200 range.

don't compare tdp with the actual possible wattage, nano was tweaked to death, its consumption was much higher than the current one you can have with that mod

the same is possible for the 480, i'm sure it can be lowered to 80w or lower, while remaining above 20MH in hash speed

500 is still in the realm of possibility, after all, 18 months ago there was a 200+ unit SP20 GB.

Also a smaller quantity could move the supplier into the next price break.

In Europe, the price of 8 GB version could be $400 with tax. It is always more than 30% higher than US.

When you want to group buy of 50/100 cards, that will increase the mining difficulty a little bitcoin. So I hope hope other people to follow your lead.

It wasn't me that was looking at 50 or 100 gpu's.  It was Phil, but I think he was looking at a bulk arrangement with a vendor.  Not sure if that was for a group buy or if he was going to buy that many for himself.  If someone organizes a group buy at a decent price I wouldn't be opposed to that! :-)

my vendor has not contacted me on a price for 50 cards.  At the moment I have 2 on order from bhphoto.

8 on notify me from newegg.

If I get 50 at an okay price I need 15 and will sell the other 35 at a tiny markup. to usa buyers only.

The markup would be  tiny 5 bucks for me and shipping would be on you.  but frankly this looks like a remote event

From what I am observing there should be a LOT of supply.  As in hundreds to thousands of cards at the major retailers.

Unfortunately, noone has released stock yet in NA...motherfuckers.

Oh yeah...since the 480 vs 470 specs:

480:   1266 MHZ GPU   vs 470:  1206 MHZ GPU
480:   256-bit bus         vs 470:  256-bit bus
480:   2000MHZ RAM    vs 470:  1750 MHZ RAM
480:   256 GB/s            vs 470:  224 GB/s
480:   TDP:  150W        vs 470:  110W

Release Date is stated as June for both.

I may just go with 470 cards.

I saw somewhere that if the memory frequency of 480 RX is 2000MHz, you can down clock core to 1000 MHz without affecting the the hash. So 470 could be good.

At those price and the difficulty of the Ethereum mining doubles every two months, you will not have ROI.

Official statement in response to PCIE power draw:

"As you know, we continuously tune our GPUs in order to maximize their performance within their given power envelopes and the speed of the memory interface, which in this case is an unprecedented 8 Gbps for GDDR5. Recently, we identified select scenarios where the tuning of some RX 480 boards was not optimal. Fortunately, we can adjust the GPU's tuning via software in order to resolve this issue. We are already testing a driver that implements a fix, and we will provide an update to the community on our progress on Tuesday (July 5, 2016)."
