Otherwise, your IOUs will be useless, unfortunately... ;) If somebody agrees to take away your debt than why do you need Ripple ? That's a real question and I found nowhere answer for that. Buying at 10k XRP per btc is actually saying that Ripple is not only as good as Bitcoin, but actually BETTER. Now, I think this is a ridiculous statement for a system a few weeks into public beta as compared to a battle-tested and widely used 4 year old platform that is Bitcoin.
