Title: Words on the blockchain
Post by: Cashew on June 08, 2016, 10:31:38 AM
I've heard some stories of words put forever on the blockchain. Is it some nice luck or prepared acts ? Is there some tools, tricks or ways to do the same thing ?

This should answer your question: https://en.bitcoin.it/wiki/OP_RETURN

There are some nice explorers: for example this one: http://coinsecrets.org/

Here is how I did it when I was Bitcoin young and foolish:

http://blockchain.info/tx/bf40e4a1c2546747bc800a085e7145d921a9f402aaf4040c155ff5d0df9cc999

Which reads:

Code:
11When1DieBuryMeDeepLayTwoXVEY5jv 0.00000001 BTC
11SpeakersAtMyFeetAPairofXXTyrHor 0.00000001 BTC
11HeadphonesonMyHeadAndXXXXYUSvnd 0.00000001 BTC
11ALwaysPLayTheGratefuLDeadWdq4Xo 0.00000001 BTC
                                  0.00000004 BTC

Again, please don't do this because it bloats the blockchain with unprunable crap.

I would argue that these things *should* be done.
Bitcoin should be attacked and abused to the max, all the time.

I don't want to store my wealth in a system where we have to kindly ask people not to break it. We already have that.

Break this shit, and please do it quick. I don't want to be surprised in the future.

Yes, I agree that Bitcoin should be attacked constantly and it is attacked constantly.

If everyone started burning coins like I did then it would not break Bitcoin.

It causes the unspent transaction list to be filled with unspendable and unprunable entries.

This increases the amount of memory needed to store the unspent transaction list.

Not a real big issue.  Just an expensive, unprofitable and ineffective attack.  Basically just an annoyance.

If you want to throw your coins away no one is going to stop you.  Go for it.

But if you choose to be nice, not flush your own coins down the toilet, and not create a bunch of baggage for the blockchain then don't do it.

Better?

This is the correct answer really, though BurtW is right in that it can be an annoyance. I have found it useful for notarizing or timestamping data, using http://deedbot.org/

I used a service, now defunct, called etchablock.com.  You can see all of their transactions here:
