Title: How to setup multiple graphic cards?
Post by: ijphlrnxewho on March 08, 2013, 05:02:23 AM
What motherboard do you recommend for me to setup multiple graphic cards?
Also, I've heard that I might have to use dummy plug when I install 2 graphic cards to the motherboard. Is that true?

You need to be sure that using the considerable amount of money it will cost you wouldn't be better spent just buying Bitcoin. Electricity costs far more than you think it does. If you are just playing with mining bitcoin whatever is in your computer now is probably fine.

Tbh, any motherboard with multiple PCIe slots will be good.

The speed doesn't matter, you can use x16, x8, x4 and even x1 slots.  Don't believe me?  Here's my proof of concept.

The motherboard is a http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813128514
Which has 4 PCIe x4 - x16 slots and 2 PCIe x1 slots.

I'm using these PCIe risers to connect them.

Or you can slap 4 cards right on the board.

Dummy plugs aren't needed unless you're using Windows I believe.  I use Ubuntu and it's not required.  I had them on in that photo, but took them off shortly after and it still works perfectly.

Good luck.

From what I understand, GPUs might soon be a little outdated, once all of the big miners and mining outfits are using those ASIC rigs en masse. You might be better off not investing too much of your system into mining, depending on your electricity costs.

Edit: That is, assuming ASIC ever happens. Heh.

Why wouldn't it? The technology is there, what kind of idiot wouldn't want to sell as many of them as possible?
