Title: Canadian Bitcoins Fundraiser. Help a NPO & give BTC a good name @ the same time
Post by: lightbox on June 10, 2016, 08:38:04 PM
RAISED SO FAR:  3.198 BTC as of 2016-06-11 10:30 EDT
---------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hi everyone, its been a long time since I've been active here, but felt that this warranted a return to the forums...

Recently a local dog rescue charity got hit by ransomware.  Their story has made National headlines on CBC as well as onto CBC Radio One "The Current".

http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/ottawa/ransomware-hack-bark-charity-virus-1.3585039 (http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/ottawa/ransomware-hack-bark-charity-virus-1.3585039)

You can read more about what we are doing to help them here:

https://www.canadianbitcoins.com/bark-ottawa.php (https://www.canadianbitcoins.com/bark-ottawa.php)

But the short of it is, we're trying to raise a total of 5.0 BTC for them from the bitcoin community, to show them that not all bitcoiners are bad people.

We have donated an initial 1.0 BTC to get the ball rolling.

The donation address is: https://blockchain.info/address/1HD921z1ojj6cU4wNubJo5mKUSgvCEPPdx (https://blockchain.info/address/1HD921z1ojj6cU4wNubJo5mKUSgvCEPPdx) and we will utilize our brokerage to convert to CAD at spot rate and 0 fees, and bring them a cheque on June 24th.

Please help us in supporting the dogs that suffered!

Thanks!

James

What a shitty situation this poor lady found herself in. Those hackers went a step to far making an old lady who runs a nonprofit dog rescue jump through hoops to buy bitcoin and send it to them.
I hate hackers!  >:(
I'll send in 1 btc, and hopefully others will do the same.
Lets go fellow bitcoin brothers and sisters. let's raise this money.

Hackers who give discounts? The hacker had some heart by lowering the price but he should have made her just keep her btc and unlock her computer because you don't scam old ladys who are probably poor and spend all their money helping helpless animals.
Makes me want to throw up all over my computer when I read these stories and listen to the pain in her voice on the radio show.
Is there any way to track down the hackers and try to get them arrested?

James, can you put in an auto update on how much was raised in the OP, or just update manually every few hours so people are not forced to check the address.

no way for that. they will never get arrested and if so they will be arrested in russia or ukraine or china where all hackers are from.

Change the address to a blockchain.info link - https://blockchain.info/address/1HD921z1ojj6cU4wNubJo5mKUSgvCEPPdx

It sucks how these scumbags who do stuff like this only further the hatred of Bitcoin. Many who don't know anything about it read main stream media like this and then conclude, ah look it's Bitcoin again, that currency that's only used by hackers and people doing illegal things.

WTF?? He even negotiated and lowered the price? That's like him saying "yeah I know what I'm doing is wrong, but fuck you." What a dirt bag.

I know. I was just trying to hold on to some sort of hope that the criminals would get busted.

How come the 1st deposit has no confirmations?

Blockchain.info just doesnt show confirmations once it passes a certain amount.  The first payment was sent by me last night, it already has over 140 confirmations.

3 btc in the first few hours. I'm sure this will raise at least 10 btc by the time its over. People only need time to see the thread.

ok. if I want to donate can i donate with cash?

Sure just place a cash in mail, or cash in person order on our site www.canadianbitcoins.com (http://www.canadianbitcoins.com), and write on the order form that its for BARK, we'll adjust the rate to spot and send the bitcoins to the address for you so its all tracked in the campaign.

"Police admit they can do little

Police say ransomware usually originates overseas and is difficult if not impossible to trace, so there's little they can do except warn people to make backup copies of their hard drive.

Sgt. Paul Batista of the Ottawa Police Service's computer forensics unit says prevention is the best defense.

"If you back up your computer, once you reset you can go back to the last known good copy of what's on your system," Batista said.

Cantwell has been able to rebuild the BARK website so that it functions again, although all of its historical data is still encrypted.

The charity says it can assure its supporters that they can't get the virus by going on the website.

Now, McKeil has to decide if she will pay the ransom. According to most of the computer specialists she's consulted with, companies who've accepted the ransom demands end up getting their files back, McKeil said.

"So we are between a rock and a hard place," she said."

So the police are saying they cant stop this nor can they catch the people involved. I think Canada needs to get a better police force to be able to track and prosecute the felons.

Thanks!  It will be valued at the end of the donation period (unfortunately with the price dropping).  I have not been converting to CAD as donations come in (as can be verified on the blockchain).

Come on animal lovers, lets get a few more BTC in before Friday!!  Its for the dogs!

Thanks!

James

Thanks to all who donated - though I'm a little disappointed with the result, we didn't hit our 5 BTC goal.

The coins have been moved to sell and convert to a cheque to donate to B.A.R.K. Ottawa.

3.21992064 BTC  @  $870.24 CAD/BTC = $2802.10 CAD

Cheers,
 James
