Bitcoin is like the first distributed startup where you don't need to be an accredited investor to buy in. It has all the same properties of a startup: looks dumb initially, roller coaster ride, PR crises, many competitors - and massive upside. Everybody likes to think they'd have put $25k into Facebook in '04. But digital currency as a category removes any excuse for not trying.

Only a few years ago that would have been considered a very bold prediction. I remember there were also some fake ads, making fun of Western Union ("Bitcoin - Moving money far better"). even though Bitcoin surpassed Western Union in terms of market capitalization, the WU business has not yet been suffering significantly from it. But I'm sure it may only be a matter of another few years, when WU's remittance business might come under heavy pressure because of Bitcoin. The executives of Western Union must take radical steps to transform their business now if they want the company to survive.

Comparing Bitcoin to Twitter does not make too much sense imho. The "services offered" are totally different. If you ask me, Twitter is also extremely overvalued if you consider its economic potential.

I think after this majority will be holding their bitcoin like me tightly we may soon see 800$+ if we see same movement like today next few weeks on sunday like today. ;)

I think its is some how very much right that bitcoins has brought western union under pressure significantly but on the other hand it has no comparison with twitter since that is entirely a different phenomena and discussions on each and every life's topics.

This is indeed amazing the next company or website that they are going to overtake are google and facebook,this is indeed a big mile stone for Bitcoin and it only took a few years to make things happen..

I do get your point but you can't compare the two, also because bitcoin market cap is made of several apsects which Western Union completely lacks.

Heard this earlyer and seen the article this is great news for bitcoin.  western union is a dead man walking anyway so the soon it falls the better.

Market cap is a pretty tenuous metric at the best of times. Comparing Bitcoin's market cap to that of a business is even more shaky. Still, it's a fun figurette all the same.

Awesome! Saw the Twitter news earlier but Western Union!! I think Western Union will reform thier structure to 'fight against' Bitcoin even at its own loss to start, when (yes when) Bitcoin gets more main stream

It might not be worth measuring, but I still think this is a kind of cool thing to think about every few days or so. Maybe someone can develop a website that compares Bitcoin's market cap from the morning to other businesses and investments, if that doesn't already exist? It would be interesting to compare the value that is generated compared to other stock/bond investments.

I think eventually the bitcoin cap will be more than most of the companies. However, I think we should focus on the popularity of bitcoin use in mainstream to measure the success rather than using the market cap which doesn't seem very useful to me.

It's Amazing.Bitcoin surpasses the Western Union... For now some country can see the usefulness of bitcoin.. and maybe someday bitcoin have a domination for dollar with the support of some country.

The bandit fees era is over, now you can send money for 6 cents, they need to adapt fast.

Paypal and VISA are brokers of currencies and Bitcoin itself a currencies don't compare a currencies with brokers. Same with almost all other providers, they can be more valued than bitcoin but when bitcoin will be add in main stream no one will beat bitcoin. Hope to see soon all brokers will add bitcoin as payment option.

I think yes. Since you can earn money from bitcoins free rather than twitter that just entertainment and no earnings except you're in a twitter signature campaigm.

Well, bitcoin has recently just crossed the iconic $10 billion market capitalization, and it does get better than this. Bitcoin has long exceeded WU in terms of market cap, but never knew twitter as well :P

Just shows what an amazing turn of events halving can bring.

Good,  the age of western union exploiting poor migrants is almost over. 1-4 years more and they are toppled.  Weath distribution will become fairer.

People arn't adopting it to replace Western union - this is purely a Chinese speculative bubble.

This is pretty incredible but it is just the beginning we will see what bitcoin can become in time.
