Title: Can the transactions made on LocalBitcoins.com be traced to the BTC wallet?
Post by: JB0011 on June 14, 2016, 12:23:48 AM
If you use your wallet to fund your LocalBitcoins.com account. Then sell your BTC there to someone. Can that person easily trace and find out your wallet? Or its not easy to do that?

I have BTC in my wallet. I send that BTC to my LocalBitcoins.com account. Then I sell the BTC to someone over there. I do not want that user to ever find out about my wallet (the wallet I used to send BTC to localbitcoins). Is that possible? If yes, how can I ensure that?

I know this much: all BTC transactions are public and traceable. Whether or not they can be linked to you depends on the steps you take. Always use a different address for each transaction.

Here's what you should do to ensure your BTC can't be traced to your originating wallet:
  • With your BTC, buy Monero on an exchange (account usually needed) or ShapeShift.io (no account needed). Monero is completely private and untraceable, whereas BTC is pseudonymous.
  • After you have your Monero, go to xmr.to  At that site, you send them Monero and they convert the Monero to BTC and send the BTC to the BTC address you specify (in this case, your localbitcoins wallet)

Now there is no traceable route back to your original wallet. Cheers!

If you're that concerned, just put a mixer in between the sending wallet and the receiving wallet.  :D

wallet > mixer > wallet  :P

Also, always be sure to check all local rules and regulations and always comply with relevant codes, ordinances, laws, and social standards.

I'm not a fan of mixers. They just make it very, very hard to trace. There are companies now which specialize in tracing BTC transactions. As they get better at what they do, the obscurity that BTC mixers provide will become more transparent. And since all BTC transactions are public and permanent, the transaction may be completely transparent with technology developed in 2-3 years (or more or less).

The Monero route guarantees no traceability.

The Monero route guarantees no traceability.

^^^ That's impossible. :P

How is that? Monero transactions are mathematically proven to be private and untraceable.

Wrong topic, wrong forum for a Monero debate. lol

Hemm.. in my opinion If you want to make a transaction it always shows your wallet address to people who you transfer, Maybe you can try another way if you didn't want to showed your address

XMR is good but too high inflation rate at the moment.

It's one of the few alts that's retaining value during the BTC pump. But anyway, the OP would only have the Monero for 20 minutes to an hour at most during this process, so if there was or wasn't inflation, it wouldn't matter in this case.

The answer to your question is no, not unless LocalBitcoins provides certain information to the buyer.

When you transfer bitcoins to LocalBitcoins you are sending bitcoins to a deposit address in their wallet. It would only be a coincidence if the bitcoins at that deposit address are the ones that are sent to the buyer.

Why not mix through an exchange? Cheaper than a proper mixer and most of them throw your coins into a mass of other ones and send out through a separate address.
