Title: Do i need a good computer to mine with ASIC?
Post by: eslam on June 18, 2016, 08:18:28 PM
I have my laptop it's not good a bit old.

But i will mine with ASIC .

So do i need a better PC to mine with ASIC??

But i thought that ASIC didn't need a good computer to work fine

poptok1 is just spamming and not actually reading what you asked.

You don't need a very powerful computer to control ASICs. So long as it can run bfgminer or cgminer you should be fine.

You need a grid of ASICs of recent generation on a good pool to actually cover overhead and that doesn't include the time to cover the cost of said ASICs. Not even a multi-million dollar Opteron(faster than the fastest Intel i7) mainframe can outperform a small batch of S7 ASICs.

As it's been mentioned now, the computer doesn't really matter (as long as it's from this century I'm sure you'll be fine). Better hardware means nothing because you're using the ASIC for computing power.

Yeah, spamming :) right, no way i could just misunderstand the guy.
Any way, one unit will give you a loss. 99.9% chance that you will never reach ROI.
Like  DuddlyDoRight said, today you will need a 10? machines, tomorrow 20 and after the halving
even 100 miners may be insufficient to get square.
But for sure that will be a good lesson, some fun set-ups to do, and problems to solve.
For learning sake, always worth to try. For profit, not so much.

As my experience even a low specs of your desktop or laptop you can mine and use any asic.. You need is high speed miner asic that can increase your hashrate and stable internet no need to increase the speed of your internet 2 mbps is enough unless if you have lots of asic miners you need a better speed of internet..

Most ASIC miners have their own computer to control them built in, just plug in power and Ethernet.

The exceptions tend to be very low-capability units - the Avalon 6 being the only CURRENT exception but even that unit is going to be a bit marginal on profitability after the halfing, unless you have VERY VERY cheap or free power.

raspberry is enough but you need to add a good psu, with gpu also the same you need cheap component for mining

so no you don't need a good computer

ASIC didn't need, but need a good computer

What I found difficult with ASIC miners is the way how they are configured with the help of computer, its a bit tricky and needs a lot of reading online How to's, DIY's and thread topics.
Once you bought it the challenge is on, however if you done it right and running it is a one down accomplishment of yours.

ASIC miners contain everything, you just need to plug-in-and-play with any computer, as your PC just shows the mining power, you need good cooling system instead in order to let these ASICs run properly... Else, everything is all fine and you just need good internet...

ASIC miners are FPGAs with discreet login and custom PCB and cooling.. An X86 or ARM or PPC isn't..

A basic pc is enough.

But i will mine with ASIC .

So do i need a better PC to mine with ASIC??
I only use a 50$ tablet and works perfect

Android or linux? I didn't know that Android had support to run ASIC sticks or a cgminer build.
my tablet is win10

I really like your cooling solution  ;D Did you overclock them or they need this kind of cooling even with stock frequencies/voltage ?
(I guess it still makes a lot of noise ...)

Let it be noted this is now a alt-coin discussion.. An ARM chip is an application processor and do to internal thermal-throttle is probably worse than a x86.

The ARM chip is only controling the ASICS miners and they are mining bitcoins, so this is not an alt-coin discussion. And maybe there is no throttle at all, haven't you seen the fan ?  ;D

you'll get a better profit margin with a more powerful processor, try hanging it off a x64 linux box which has its usb controller hanging off its PCI bus. the arm architecture still suffers from poor i/o due to its reduced instruction set; meaning that it executes more commands per cycle meaning it can't respond to interrupt requests as quickly.

im not sure that DuddlyDoRight knows what they are talking about; the system processor itself is not mining.

What is ASIC by the way?

Specific hardware created to mine BTC

The USB bus on ASIC miners is only for control network and mining are on the PCB of the miner(s). Network on the miners needs to be gigabit LAN or better over PCIe. Most are on a slow bus to a controller and the controller interfaces the cable. PCIe is probably too expensive to implement for these turn-profit companies who make miners.

As it's been specified now, the PC doesn't generally make a difference (insofar as it's from this century I'm certain you'll be fine). Better equipment amounts to nothing since you're utilizing the ASIC for processing power.
