if I wanted to use and old un encrypted wallet why would this not work???? I thought BitCoin qt was just a window on the BlockChain, so you could still use your address using you private key???? Does encrypting a my wallet stop me look at those address and using them say from blockchain.info wallet if I installed a new copy of Bitcoin qt then could I use the old non encrypted wallet exactly what is Bitocin QT doing that can stop me using my old wallet elsewhere??? it must be doing something to the blockchain right??? or else how would it know??? Title: Re: QT wallet encrypt Post by: CIYAM on March 27, 2013, 05:35:31 AM It's a little hard to work out exactly what your problem is but perhaps you are wondering why after encrypting a wallet your old wallet backup is no longer to be relied upon?
If so the reason is simply that (most likely) the very first time you make a tx with the encrypted wallet a new *change* address will be used which the old wallet has never seen (the pool of unused addresses is replaced with new ones when you encrypt your wallet). So if you have encrypted your wallet then be sure to back it up! Then make a brand new wallet, encrypt the new wallet, make a backup of your new encrypted wallet and send all your funds from the old wallet to your new encrypted wallet. Then make regular backups of your new wallet every 50 to 100 new transactions or once a month whichever happens first, unless you don't do anything that month.
